2013 Wsop No Limit Holdem Main Event

Recommended Posts

Day 1A of the 2013 WSOP Main Event is about to begin and based on the size of the fields in the preliminary events I think they will get more than last years 6598 entrants.

I'm not sure which Day 1 Daniel will be playing but it won't be today since he's still in the $10K PLO.

Good luck to Daniel and any other FCPers who are playing the Main Event this year.

Updates at Poker News and Daniel will Tweet updates when he plays.

Welcome To the 2013 WSOP Main Event!

Welcome to poker's Christmas morning, as today marks the start of the greatest tournament on the face of the planet — the World Series of Poker Main Event!

Every year, thousands of poker players take to the felt inside with dreams of becoming the next great champion of this event, but there can only be one. Along the way, many dreams will be shattered, hopes dashed and bankrolls crushed, but heading into Day 1, every single person entering the field is bursting with excitement while doing best to maintain the butterflies in their stomachs.

Last year, Greg Merson defeated a field of 6,598 players en route to winning the $8,531,853 top prize. He'll be in action on Day 1a and eyeing the immaculate feat of going back to back in such a difficult and grueling event.

Over the course of the next 10 days, all eyes in the poker world will be fixed solely on this one event — the Main Event — and it is PokerNews' pleasure once again to be the ones providing the official live updates. The cards will be in the air shortly, with things kicking off at 12 p.m. See you shortly!

Five-Way All-In Pot Shipped To Sohrabi; Three Players Eliminated

Wow!

What. A. Hand.

An innocent raise from a player under the gun to 1,100 started the action over on Table 443 in the Purple Section of the Amazon Room before play folded over to a player in middle position. That player moved all in for 11,700. Right behind the shove, Mac Sohrabi was in the hijack seat and reraised all in for 23,100. Then, the player on the button called all in for 16,550 before action slid over to Yucel Eminoglu in the big blind.

Eminogla tanked and tanked, before eventually getting the clock called on him by not one, but two others at his table. After about 30 seconds, he shoved a giant stack of T5,000 chips into the middle, having all players in the hand well covered. As if four players weren't enough excitement for this pot, the original raiser from under the gun snap-called and created a five-way all-in pot!

Here's what we saw:

Under-the-gun player: 4d.gif3d.gif

Middle-position shove: da.gif10c.gif

Sohrabi: qc.gifqh.gif

Button: ac.gifks.gif

Eminoglu: js.gifjd.gif

The player under the gun snap-called all in for around 40,000 in chips holding the 4d.gif3d.gif, but it was Sohrabi who held the best hand going into the battle with his pocket queens.

Following a runout on the flop, turn and river of 7s.gif6h.gif6d.gif7c.gif4s.gif, Sohrabi's queens held strong and he was awarded the main pot. He moved to nearly 100,000. Eminoglu was able to scoop a side pot from the player who held the 4d.gif3d.gif and move to 150,300 in chips. The other three players were all eliminated.

Meh...I bricked two massive draws but I also got in KK vs AA and spiked a king. I guess take the good with the bad.

Ended day with 25k. Refocus up for day 2 on Tuesday! A new day means new opportunities.

Ivey, Negreanu, Hellmuth and Mercier Among Those Here for Day 1c

Today marks the final starting flight of the 2013 World Series of Poker Main Event, and already the record for the largest one-day Main Event field in history (3,418 players) looks to be in jeopardy. Earlier today, Ty Stewart of the WSOP tweeted that there were already 3,000 players registered for the third and final starting day, and this was three and a half hours prior to play starting and eight hours before registration closes.

On each of the first two starting days, Day 1a and Day 1b, Evan Panesis (190,975) and Clement Tripodi (207,050) bagged up the most chips, respectively. Day 1c usually lends itself to the overall chip leader as they are so many more chips in play, don't be surprised if someone emerges with over 250,000 to take the reigns heading into the Day 2s.

You can catch up on Day 1a by reading the recap here, or do the same for Day 1b here.

As always, Day 1c will have the largest concentration of pros, celebrities and notable faces in the field, so expect plenty of excitement all day long. Some of those who will be in the field today are Phil Ivey, Daniel Negreanu, Phil Hellmuth and Jason Mercier, but there will just be so many that you definitely don't want to miss it.

Negreanu Looking for Third Main Event Cash in a Row

When it comes to popular poker players, Daniel Negreanu ranks right up there at the top of the list. The five-time bracelet winner currently sits in second on the 2013 World Series of Poker Player of the Year Leader Board with 598.34 points, thanks in large part to winning the inaugural WSOP Asia Pacific (APAC) Main Event back in April.

Surprisingly, Negreanu's success in the WSOP Main Event here in Vegas has been limited. His best performance came back in 2001 when he just missed out on the final table by finishing in 11th place. His next cash wouldn't be until five years later, and the next five years after that. Last year, Negreanu made a deep run before being eliminated by actor Kevin Pollak. Even so, it marked the first time "Kid Poker" had back-to-back cashes, which means this year he's looking to make it three in a row.

Negreanu’s Past Main Event Successes

Year # of Entries Place Prize

2001 613 11th $63,940

2006 8,773 229th $42,882

2011 6,865 211th $47,107

2012 $6,598 160th $52,718

Doyle going deep would be good for TV, good for the game.

An (almost) 80 year old man, two-time world champion, 10 time bracelet winner, building a big stack in the biggest crapshoot tournament of the year. This is a landmark year. I hope he does really well, because sad as it is to say, he doesn't have too many years left to make runs anymore.

Phil Ivey Eliminated By Max Steinberg in Largest Pot of the Main Event

Phil Ivey began the day by chipping up from 198,800 to 330,000 in Level 11. He appeared on the verge of jumping into the top five, but lost a sizable pot to fall back to about 180,000. After grinding his way to back up the counts to about 425,000, Ivey got his chips in again with a chance to command a top-five stack, but what appeared on the surface to be a golden opportunity was in fact the worst case scenario for him.

Ivey raised to 7,500 from under the gun and was called by Olaoluwa Okelola in the hijack, Max Steinberg in the cutoff, and Anthony Gregg in the big blind.

The flop came down as.gif10h.gif3s.gif and Gregg checked to Ivey who bet 16,000. Okelola raised to 41,000, Steinberg called, and Gregg folded. Ivey took a few moments before reraising all in for roughly 416,000. Okelola folded, but Steinberg called immediately and tabled 10c.gif10d.gif. Ivey was left with one out in the deck as he showed 3h.gif3c.gif.

Neither the 5s.gif turn nor qs.gif river saved Ivey, ending his Main Event.

The usually stoic Ivey exited through the back of the ESPN stage with his hat in his hand, slapping it as he made his way to the back hallways of the Rio.

Meanwhile, Steinberg now sits second in chips with just above 1 million after starting the day with a mere 39,000.
