2013 Nhl Signings/trades

So Vinny Lecavalier is being bought out...I am confused on how this works now..

Is he a UFA and the Ligthning CANT sign him? Or is he a UFA just like regular UFAs and Lightning have full crack at him?

The memo that was sent out I am assuming means that buying out a player and then resigning him for a lower contract is cap circumvention?

Also for a player to be bought out, first he has to clear waivers..

Once he clears waivers he'll become an UFA. Tampa can't sign him.

Kunitz's deal begins with the 2014-15 season and runs through the 2016-17 campaign. It has an avg. annual value of $3.85 million. #Pens

Jeff Marek ‏@JeffMarek 3h

Former Tampa GM's Rick Dudley + Brian Lawton both had deals in place in the past to move Lecavalier that ownership ended up nixing.

Dudley had him going to Toronto for Kaberle, Antropov, Hoglund and either Boyes or a 1st (TB choice).

Lawton had him going to the Habs for Price, Pacioretty, a 1st and either Subban or McDonaugh.

It was after the failed Lecavalier trade that MTL went out and got Gomez

Further on Lecavalier Jay Feaster offered him to Vancouver for Luongo when the Canucks were having a hard time resigning him.

Damian Cristodero ‏@LightningTimes 2h

Because he has a no-move clause in his contract, Lecavalier can and will reject going on waivers prior to buyout.

Wow, talk about your fluctuating values (both on Lecavalier and the players involved). You could either have Kaberle, Hoglund, Antropov and a 1st. So...a first, a third-liner, and a rapidly deteriorating rental player. Or, Price, Pacioretty, Subban and a 1st. So...a first, franchise D, solid G (hell of a lot better than who TB has had) and top-6 scorer. Yeah, I'd take that for Vinny.

Both of those trades were rumoured before anyone knew how awesome the montreal package was or how crappy the Leafs package was.

Well yeah, hence my comment about how crazily volatile player values are. At the time, I'm sure both packages were reasonable.

Kunitz!!!

I can't believe Kunitz signed that reasonably after the year he just had. Talk about being right where you want to be and sacrificing a little to be there. Good on him.

Apparently the Penguins have offered Letang 8yr $54 million

If he doesn't take it show him the door. Well at least trade him and get something. He could be worth more but not to the penguins. When he's on he's a game changer but he has been too inconsistent, especially in the playoffs. When he's off it's noticeable and usually pretty bad for the pens. Could easily see him blowing up somewhere else though. Health is a bit of a concern too. Had he not missed 13 in a row I think he might have won the Norris this year.

Honestly, if the two sides are that close it'll get done. No point speculating Letang's future any further. They're quibbling over roughly half a mill per season.

Yep and...

Pierre LeBrun @Real_ESPNLeBrun

Also told that Letang camp counter-offered with a long-term deal which would pay less than $8 M (north of $7.5 M); Pens said too high

With Karlsson with 6 more @ $6.5m cap hit per (starts at 5.5 and goes up to 7.5) you would think that the Penguins would balk much more than that (7m per?)

edit:

Will DePaoli@TIOPS_DePaoli 12h

Can confirm Letang's agent Kent Hughes countered the Penguins 8 year, $54 million offer, asking for 8 years, $62.5 million/ full NTC

Pens offered 6.75m per, counter was 7.8m per. I understand that the cap will be probably going way up (after the squeeze next season) and Letang wants to be paid ... he could gamble on a 1-year contract?

Well, he can sign an extension as of July 5th. His 13/14 cap hit doesn't change. His next contract starts in 14/15 and that'll be the $7 or $8M cap hit.

I think Shero wants to lock him up ASAP so that he'll know whether or not to deal him. More value dealing him now than at the deadline or whatever.
