Let me say there are several ways to respect someone with regards to poker. You can respect them for their pure playing ability, their long term contribution to the game, their ability to be a good ambassador for the game, or a combination of these elements..

Now I'm not saying the people above are perfect. Some have at times exhibited less than ideal behavior. But I'm looking at the overall long term aspect of their careers.

In a more serious note i'm probably not informed enough to state with any great certainty who the most respected are.

For example Some might say Stu Ungar deserves recognition for his achievements, other might say he was a degenerative drug user who got what he deserved.

When I think Respect, I have to think they are a good all round ambassador for the game so with that in mind these are my ten

Doyle Brunson

Amarillo Slim

Because they were there from the beginning of poker as we know it today and commanded respect through their play. Obviously Brunson was much more public (books, website, twitter etc), I will never forget that video of Doyle and Amarillo scooter racing at the WSOP!

Johnny Chan

Chip Reese

Mike Sexton

The not so old timers who have still been around a long time and proven themselves as players and spokes people

Daniel Negreanu

Phil Ivey

Antonio Esfandiari

The best of the new players who everyone in the game listens to

Jennifer Harman

Vanessa Selbst

Two of the best players that happen to be women and again are looked up to and respected in their game and for how they are in public.

Honourable mentions I could not add to my list:

Phil Helmuth - whines way to much and is really all about the drama when in front of the camera

Chris Moneymaker - If he could play better than average then he might make the list, certainly great spokes person and his "underdog" win at the WSOP is the reason why many players started to play

Tom Dwan - Obviously awesome player but really just not much to say away from the tables

If you guys are going to mention your 'respect', you may want to at least spell Chip Reese's name right.

Erik Seidel

Barry Greenstein

Patrik Antonius

Doyle Brunson

Stu Ungar

Johnny Moss

Wild Bill Hickok

IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER

SERIOUS BUSINESS, THIS IS SERIOUS LIST

Last two are sorta wildcard guesses, don't know much about them. The first 8 though all seem to be very well respected all round.

Come to think of it, I guess Barry Greenstein and Dan Harrington should be added to my Honorable Mention list.

LOL @ TJ {Cloutier} being respected. Who's he respected by, craps dealers?

Them and those who inducted him into the Hall of Fame, most likely for his 6 bracelets.

yeah, do a quick quiz of pros playing in this year's tournament, and see how much respect TJ gets.

This thread is about the 10 most respected players in Poker History, not the 10 most respected in the last 3 years.

Okay, fine, but TJ was considered a cash fish even when he was winning bracelets. He had no respect from his peers, even then. He had an edge at tournaments, during an era when tournament play was horrible, but that edge has been obliterated. He is -EV in all forms of poker at this point, I wouldn't stake him for a 1-2NL game. TJ is a broke degenerate who requites stakes to get in action, who has ALWAYS required stakes to be in action. This is not the type of player that should be on any top ten list of poker respect. I respect players who can support themselves by the game.

Well actually he was not in my top 10 but was one of my Honorable Mentions. Cloutier has won more money at the WSOP than Johnny Chan has, and that is without ever winning the main event. Although he did finish second to Chris Ferguson one year and third one other year.

If cash winnings at the WSOP is your only measure, I suppose you make an argument. I would give Chan points for being able to be a millionare from cash games, and deduct them from TJ for being a broke degenerate. .

Whatever winnings TJ has earned is negated easily by his cash game play and his well-known general gambling addiction.

Like BigD said, he's a broke degen that should be in GA.

Yes, the guy is way past his prime at 73 years old, but the guy has won almost 10 million in poker tournaments, winning 58 major tournaments. He also had a heart attack and surgery ten years ago, and a blood clot on his brain that was operated on. Also he played most of his career when smoking was allowed and then suddenly had to stop smoking at the table. At 73 (with health problems) the guy probably cares more about action than winning just like Nick the Greek when he got old. If people don't respect a guy who's won 58 major tournaments, I guess that's their right.
