Off Topic, Kinda.....

Recommended Posts

It's extremely profitable if people think they are in more danger than they actually are. One of my university professors would always preach this.

Off topic, but if anyone is looking for something to read:

It's written by said university professor.

Some lighthearted talk here plus this will make sure that I can read this again sometime as it's a good story, at least for me. If it wasnt for posting all those apartment stories I would forget almos

I debated posting this, because I might be overdoing this topic this week, but I made a sort of personal promise to myself that I am going to promote more positivity and try to never be negative or pu

Danny.... Thats a great attitude to have, and you will be amazed at the progress Owen can make with that kind of attitude and persistence on your part. On Feb 4, 2003, the diagnosis I got was that

I think Serge will disagree with me, and maybe this is an American thing rather than Canadian, but it seems a lot of neighbourhoods have lost that community feeling. That included suburbs, condo towers, etc. I wonder what it would take to reverse this trend? We've privatized so much, segregated so much behind tall fences, etc. Recreating that town square, all ages park, community centre etc should help a bit, but it runs deeper than that. I don't know.

Ya not my reality. We live on a street that has maybe 20 kids under age 15. Kids are Always at each other's houses. We all know each other.

We truly love the neighbourhood and area. I don't think I've been to the grocery store without running into someone I know.

Yeah, I figured. I know I've told you before, but I have no problem with your neighbourhood.

That could even be the norm in the GTA (how would I know?). Just what you read and hear about in the US is different. Friendly, neighborly Canadian culture could be our saving grace.

We have the same thing here. We close the street every year for our annual Canada Day party. Tons of neighbours on the street. Because of it, we stay home fr Canada Day. We also have our annual street sale where neighbours pretty much buy from each other.

Yeah that all died in America 15 years ago. My kid said hi to one of the neighbors across the street yesterday and the guy looked at us and walked inside. The only nice neighbors I've had the last 15 years have been people my age or older who remember what it was like. Anyone younger keep their head down.

I have a neighbor two doors down with a couple of little girls who spend all day running around screaming outside. My backyard is an open communal area which means these girls are frequently right outside my open windows yelling, squealing, screaming and doing what little girls do but it's super annoying. Little girls can scream REALLY LOUDLY.

A few weeks ago my doorbell rang. I answer and it was the older of the two little girls who was introducing herself to everyone in the neighborhood. It was really weird. She didn't quite know how to do it so I had to kind of coach her through the introductions and whatnot. She had a pen and was writing down peoples names so she'd remember. I'm pretty sure her parents had no idea she was doing this which is also strange because there's always an adult outside when they're playing. It was cute and now I'm only marginally annoyed by the noise.

I'm guilty of it too. I knew maybe 5 people in my entire building in Ottawa by name, and I lived there 5 years. That includes my landlords (2), Jim Flaherty, my next door neighbour who I only spoke to when I was being loud, and another guy that also frequented Cherry's.

I drove by the Don Cherrys while in Ottawa

On your way to the casino, I would assume. That corner is brutal.

Yes and also on the way to see Gatineau. I saw nothing wrong with the corner. I got gas at the Petro Canada

It's a heavy truck route, which makes it loud an dangerous. And the parking lot at the LCBO/Metro across the street is apparently the epicenter of crime in the city. I never noticed that, I drunk stumbled through it a million times at 2 am. Lol

I saw the homeless shelter down the street but it looked really tame in comparison to Toronto. The area is not dangerous imo.

You drove by twice, I lived there for 5 years.

I don't feel it was dangerous either, but my assertion was from a Citizen article likely rooted in statistics.

The truck traffic makes it dangerous for pedestrians, though. Several were hit while I lived there.

I didn't mind that shelter either. The more annoying one was further up Cumberland. The one near that corner, most were pretty friendly. I walked past it hundreds of times. They ask for change, you say sorry and the conversation is over.

I can make the same analogy about Toronto when you post. I have lived in the city of Toronto my whole life.

It is so f'ing stupid how all of the trucks going to Gatineau from Montreal funnel through that Besserer/Rideau stretch. Ideally there should be a tunnel that connects the boulevard part of King Edward to the highway but I can also see why no one would pay for it...

Not sure... until recently the NCC didn't even do stuff for New Year's (got a lot of flack from tourism industry). Unfortunately Winterlude doesn't start until late January (there's a 15% chance that the Rideau Canal would be open for skating while you are here). Rink of Dreams would be open. For indoors I guess museums are the way to go ... for outdoors you can rent snowshoes and check out millions of trails/Gatineau Hills. Or enjoy the sky hills. Hmm... if you are willing to drive an hour to the St Lawrence they do up one of those touristy historic places (Upper Canada Village) with Christmas lights everywhere that could be a hit.

Dunno. Pretty quiet time of the year.

Free light show on parliament every night right?

And you can almost always tour it, I think? I never did.

Ottawa sucks in the winter.

I think the light show is in the summers only (http://www.pch.gc.ca/eng/1379439870049) but there are Christmas Lights on the Hill. As a kid my parents would zip around but now ... tons of security (of course). Pretty touristy to have your picture with the lights and the peace flame. Looks like you are bang on about tours (http://www.parl.gc.ca/Visitors/index-e.html).

The purpose of this thread is two-fold:

Firstly, a belated announcement that the G household is pleased to announce the birth of Anna Charlotte G, born 7 pounds, 8 ounces on July 19th. Mother and baby are doing very well.

Secondly, to plead for a loaner of someone's mlb.tv account! If anyone has one, or even has a friend who might be sympathetic to the ravages of fatherhood, I sure could use something to help me stay sane during the long sleepless nights! If anyone was willing to share their password for even a few weeks, I would offer my eternal gratitude, as well as a $20 donation to the charity of your choice.

Cheerio!
