FCP Bob 1,321
Pretty scary stuff. It's too soon to know exactly what has happened but reports are of two explosions with 2 people dead and around 30 injured some very seriously. There are also reports of more devices being found. This Vine shows one of the explosions https://vine.co/v/bFdt5uwg6JZ http://www.bostonglobe.com/metro/2013/04/15/explosions-rock-boston-marathon-finish-line-dozens-injured/yLhfDT1XC3HXSa8wPiVijL/story.html

AmScray 355
It's you and I, Bob. We're the only two people left here who care anymore. You because you're stuck in the glory days and me because nobody else will have me. When word went out of a terrorist attack in Boston, everyone else ran someplace else to learn more, to talk about it. To their 'home site' for news or talk. Oh, eventually, the remaining few check-in-once-a-day'ers will poke in to give their thoughts but when news broke, there were a grand total of two people who thought of Full Contact Poker first. That's us, Bob. You and me. Here we are.

AmScray 355
And Whiskers. Although there's this phantom member who I believe randomly changes their screen name every year or so. I think that's Whiskers. I don't keep up with the subcultural shit on this site.
colonel Feathers 5
Im wondering if this wasnt a low level attack. It didnt occurr on wat woulda been optimal time for live coverage. The race was almost over, and the casualties seem to be relatively light.Altho not light for the victims. They will prolly look into radical christians or tea party folks first. Cant be insensitive to muslim sensabilities.

Whiskers 680
The race was almost over, and the casualties seem to be relatively light. @darrenrovell The avg Boston finish time (when the most people are crossing) was 4:18 last year. Explosion went off at 4:09:40. Most people in area.

BigDMcGee 3,354
FCP was the first place I went to when I heard Kobe got hurt. But for breaking news, Twitter just has so much more utility.

JubilantLankyLad 1,957
I usually think of the sick thread first, and go there first. Then I go to twitter, cnn, 4bb, and then usually back to the sick thread, which might be finished loading.
timwakefield 68
The Boston Globe reported about an hour ago that police and FBI were surrounding an apartment building in Revere (a beach town north of Boston), but they've since taken that off their site and I can't find anything about it anywhere else. That's all I've got.

Roll the Bones 74
My go to guy on all things ethical and his take on the bombing. http://atheistethicist.blogspot.com/2013/04/boston-bombings-do-not-exploit.html Boston Bombings: Do Not Exploit The second principle I would like people to keep in mind in the wake of the attacks in Boston is, "Do not exploit the attacks to promote a personal or tribal agenda." timwakefield 68
wow, brown guys with backpacks. Ya it's cute that 4chan and reddit are pretending to be FBI, but the chances of them discerning something that eluded the real FBI is pretty close to zero.
AmScray 355
Ya it's cute that 4chan and reddit are pretending to be FBI, but the chances of them discerning something that eluded the real FBI is pretty close to zero. The fact that a group of people not affiliated with law enforcement can congeal to assemble and observe facts quicker than any law enforcement body could ever dream to do is amazing. What 4chan is doing with those photos is unbelievable, in a positive way. For every time they do something that makes you question humanity, they do something like this that makes you trust and believe in the power of people. This is a little disquieting. Although 10 gets ya 20 that this is the man.
timwakefield 68
I mean they're certainly not doing any harm, but I highly doubt that they are doing anything faster than law enforcement. The Boston Globe is reporting that while nobody has been arrested, they do have an image of a suspect and are "very close" to...something, presumably an arrest. If 4chan has managed to identify an attacker, it's extremely unlikely that the FBI hasn't done the same, and done so faster than the internet. The FBI also has access to surveillance that the rest of the world doesn't, and it's been reported that a surveillance video from a department store across the street is what they've used to identify a suspect. Again 4chan are doing no harm that I can see, and if there's one chance in a million that they come up with something that investigators missed then it's worth it. They do have a history of breaking some cases of child molestation and child pornography, but that's because they were basically the only ones investigating it. Hundreds of FBI agents have pored over everything that 4chan has pored over regarding the marathon attack.
AmScray 355
You drastically overestimate law enforcement. They have the ability to compel information and access to non-public information which may or may not be relevant, but when it comes time to play Where's Waldo, crowdsourcing eyeballs beats an office full of feebs.
BigDMcGee 3,354
To be fair to the FBI, their hiring pool is a great deal stronger than a major metropolitan (IE Boston's) police force. I'd agree with office full of feebs for a typical police force, but not for the FBI. That said, crowdsourcing this kind of thing I think has a great deal of utility, and the people doing it are eager to do it, which matters a lot. The FBI agent in the office stuck on Waldo spotting duty is likely not anywhere near as enthused to be assigned that sort of detail.
Roll the Bones 74
Hell, the Feds have access to video, more photos, better techonolgoy, facial imaging software, etc... so they are likely on top of this. But, I think it really think this has opened a new era of response to these types of crimes. What the crowdsourcing has done is pretty amazing and can have some long term benefits. On Reddit there was a constant sense of "not jumping to conclusions" and fair assessment of the evidence, despite some strong bias to find the dick. If the police were to jump the gun and try to frame someone (as if always claimed by the conspriracy theorists) much of the evidence is there to contradict and open to the public. And there is always the chance that someone in the public viewing the photos will see something different or have specialized or intricate knowledge of the situation that could help. Interesting as hell anyway.
