Phil Ivey Wins £7.3M In Two Nights At London Casino, And Casino Not Paying

Recommended Posts

I don't understand why Ivey is responsible for the club using flawed cards. If he didn't plant the card or w/e yes he was taking advantage of a flaw, but that flaw is the casino's fault. If they are pissed about it, they need to sue the card maker

Most casinos have a law spike in place that makes what Ivey allegedly did illegal. Based on what the Mail said Ivey did -- intentionally and actively taking advantage of a flaw in the deck -- he's probably violating some combination of "the law" and "London gaming regulations."

IF he knew the deck was bad and IF he used that information to gain an advantage, he's not legally entitled to the money he racked up with the bad deck.

Jesus, fuuuuuuuck, I can't believe I'm that guy right now. "Technically, Ivey broke the rules which prevent anyone from ever winning, ever."

Don't be using bad decks when someone's running 200K/hand. Don't. Just... don't. Don't.

Also, I've never seen a joint NOT switch decks FOR THIS EXACT REASON when they're getting crushed. I've had the floor come to my table and burn everything like it's a motherfucking pogrom when I'm up 20 bets in an hour at a 20-500 table. "This gentleman is up 7500? HOLOCAUST."

and now Borgata is suing Ivey for edge sorting

Phil Ivey Sued for $9.6 Million by Borgata for Alleged Cheating at High-Stakes Baccarat

The Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa in Atlantic City is suing poker legend Phil Ivey for $9.6 million in winnings at the Baccarat table, according to a report from the New Jersey Law Journal on Friday.

The Borgata lawsuit alleges that Ivey exploited manufacturing flaws in playing cards during four sessions of Baccarat at the casino in 2012. Borgata claims that Ivey was able to spot tiny variations in the pattern printed on the backs of the cards in a method called "edge sorting."

Also named in the suit is card manufacturer Gemaco Inc., which designed the cards, as well as Ivey's partner, Cheng Yin Sun, who reportedly accompanied Ivey to the Baccarat table and gave instructions to the dealer.

When you tell a jury that a serial angle-shooting black man has partnered with someone named Cheng Yin Sun, unless they are combining their street smarts and karate skills to clean up the streets Hong Kong, I don't think a fair trial is possible.

Very enlightening article Bob.

After reading it I have to laugh at the whole process. The fact that the Borgata:

Agreed to the demands by Ivey and Sun.

Got taken for millions on several occasions.

Didn't think they were being played from the start.

Makes me say: "You people are either too stupid to run a casino or someone was in on the play."

In the old days, the mob knew how to discourage this sort of thing.

I'll buy that someone was in on the take. Not that they didn't know what they are doing. PI has been in Vegas for a long time. He has his own high stakes tables at several casinos, where I'm sure he makes a lot of weird demands too. A known angle-shooter, fraudster and all around shady guy doesn't get special treatment because the pitboss is star-struct, it's probably because Ivey is known to go off for millions of dollars, and anything they can't recoup with lawsuits or by refusal to pay out the times he slips one by them, they make up for on all the nights (and afternoons) when he is just being a sick degenerate.

How is it that Phil Ivey and some Asian lady are the only ones who knew how to do this?

Only ones greedy and high profile enough to get caught, maybe?

Okay, I'm certainly no expert in high stakes gambling. (BTW.. the Borgata is in Jersey, where Ivey cut his teeth, not Vegas.)

But I will give credence to the theory that the casino will angle-shoot as well with refusal to pay or litigation.

Just another reason why I don't play poker or gamble for a living.

The cheaters who I think casino are more afraid of are outsiders who haven't had a chance to get addicted to gambling. Maybe Ivey or Archie or whoever can do as much damage in a night as ten thousand card counting software engineers from Iowa could back in the day, but those guys took their money home to buy collectible Dilbert figurines or whatever, whereas the real ballers are sick, sick people.

I got heaved for counting on a low limit BJ table just for running progressive bets. (And counting.,, with a bored prostitite... and heroin,,.)

I can't imagine Ivey playing at those levels isn't being watched closer than a junior high boys swim team at the NAMBLA pool.

Absolutely agree. The argument can be made that perhaps in a moral sense what Ivey did was wrong, but how can it be illegal? If he played no part in the cards being flawed, it is on the casino 100% imo. The dealers are supposed to check the cards when they're brought into the game. Plus, at a game of those stakes, the pit boss should also be looking over the dealer's shoulder and security should be monitoring it all.

I will go a step further and say that any casino that was using that series of cards after Phil's run in with the London casino is run by idiots. I guarantee that if Ivey had lost $10,000,000 the Borgata would not be offering him a refund. I know it's a hard loss to stomach, but they should eat it and go after Gemaco to recoup the money.

I'm going to stake a stab and guess that the casinos have a significant lobbying presence in NJ.

Ivey is a hustler, the casinos are hustlers, it's all in the game.

That's it in a nutshell.

Doesn't EA sports use a version of that in their commercials?
