SuitedAces21 2,722
first off, i'm sure there are other threads i could have posted this in. so no L2SEARCH FISH comments (looking at you big d). i've been here long enough to have my own thread for this, and its not like its so busy around here we cant handle a new thread. anyways, i need a new laptop. i just want to know what you would buy if you were buying one and why. anyone who has owned an APPLE and a PC would be helpful to comment on the differences and the positives or negatives of each. feel free to make jokes and random comments. love you guys. mrdannyg 274
I mean, you did say that you hadn't bothered searching, but there's another thread on the main page of this forum:[urlhttp://www.fullcontactpoker.com/poker-forum/index.php?showtopic=145614[/url]Anyway, check that out for some not very useful suggestions.I have held off buying one so far, but am leaning towards the Dell XPS15. Good deal available now with an i7, 8GB RAM, 750GB/7200RPM HD for $850. For Canadians anyway. Can also get a solid Inspiron for a couple hundred cheaper.I've always had good luck with Dell. Dread Aidan 8
SHUT THE FUCK UP DANNYI like the Sager NP7282http://www.sagernotebook.com/index.php?pag...del_name=NP7282But got a Sony, well made and worth the premium you payDon't get the bottom end i3, an i5 is worth it and make sure not to get stuck with the first generation, if you want it to last 5 years get one with Blu-Ray like thishttp://www.bestbuy.com/site/Sony+-+VAIO+E+...p;skuId=3504885Going south of the boarder can be worth it.If you were in the Twin Cities, I'd recommend here:http://www.striketwice.com/documents/Garagesale.pdfThese people are the kind of people who figure out how to fix computers because they can't stand not knowing. Their prices on used equipment is really good, and I'd trust them to give me something really high quality. But I don't know if they ship to other cities. So no, I can't help. Sorry.(Unless you want me to pay me to buy one and ship it to you, but I doubt that would be a good deal).EDIT: Sorry, just saw you wanted a sober response. Disregard.laptops are stupid.but yeah, my next computer's more than likely going to be an apple, especially now that hp's done, so I think our price ranges are sliiiiightly different, so I doubt I'd be of any help (doubt = know). The Sager looks amazing. Also, over 2 grand. The Sony is a bit on the high end for me, but it does look sweet. Is that a significant upgrade over an Inspiron 15R or 17R? Could pay the $80 to upgrade to 6GB RAM.I have been working a little bit in a computer store with a friend of mine who owns the place so i will give you my 2 cents worth. First, what not to buy. I would stay away from HP, they are going out of the computer business. Stay away from AMD chips and NVIDIA graphic chips, they often overheat and that means a new motherboard which is big $ to repair, often not worth it. Ironically, if you have a laptop with both, it is often too hot to even put on your lap. Dell, poor design and you have to use their parts when repairing = big $We also see a lot of ACER laptops in for repair. What to buy, try toshiba, lenovo or Asus. The most expensive part to replace on a laptop is the screen, usually the part price alone is around $100. So try not to break yours. The 15.1" screens might be a little cheaper to replace. Don't buy any extended warranty from Best Buy or Future shop, some credit cards will have their own warranty for what you buy using it. Check with American Express or if you have a visa platinum. I thing 4 gb ram would be adequate for most users running windows 7. If you want more, you can always add later, just make sure your laptop has the slots available. Go to the library and check out consumer reports magazine. They will educate you and they do some good test on laptops, dropping them, spilling water on them, etc...Take care and good luck with your laptop shopping.Wait to buy your new piece of crap until windows 8 comes out in the spring.Alright, think I have it narrowed down to:http://www.bestbuy.ca/en-CA/product/sony-s...a335f7f2799en02orhttp://configure.dell.com/dellstore/config...piron-15r-n5110Would possibly pay the $80 to upgrade the latter to 6GB RAM.Same processor - am I getting anything worthwhile for the extra $50? I know the HD is 640 MG vs 500, but that doesn't matter much to me. Is the Sony brand materially better than Dell?Buy a Mac AirBook

Mercury69 3
AirBook, imoCheck the Apple site for stats and prices. They will probably have some good deals on refurbs. We're talking about 1K and up for these. Yes, you will pay more for a Mac than for a PC, but not much more and I think you will like the performance.

frautotenkinder 1,025
It's super light and portable. I prefer it to the IPad for the dedicated keyboard, and can't imagine buying another type of laptop. (Also, it doesn't get as hot, so it can actually sit in your lap.)There's no disk drive, but if you're not cloud based or google docs based you can use a flash drive.Of course, because it's Apple, you have to use their stupid clones of Word and Excel. I got this computer loaded with programs, and never checked to see if I could get the real thing. For Word I use Pages, and I forget what the Excel-like thing is called. So, depending on what your work habits are, and cost concerns, it might be worth it to purchase the real programs. Other thing about the Air, there's no dedicated number pad--so if you're trying to plug in numbers, not just manipulate data, it can be frustrating.
