12.30pm: Isildur1 and Daniel NegreanuEvery day on the EPT, the table draw throws up some fascinating pairings. Today, Team PokerStars Pros Daniel Negreanu and Viktor 'Isildur1' Blom have been matched (the Canadian three places to Blom's left), with the young German Dominik Nitsche sitting there for good measure, too.Amusingly, when Negreanu first sat down, he thought he had a good draw. "About to start Day 1 EPT Barcelona. Don't recognize anyone on my table yet," he Tweeted.Moments later he added: "Spoke too soon. Viktor Blom just joined us and I know that guy!"Early orbits were quiet, with Blom picking up a few uncontested pots. Negreanu was keen to grill his online phenom opponent. "I'm back online," he said. "I've got myself a place in Canada. What are you playing at the moment?""PLO 1-2," replied Isildur1. That will be $100-200, not $1-$2, obviously."That's a fun game," Negreanu said. "More action and more gamble."They both then quietened down again as another hand was dealt. This will be a fascinating tussle today, and the table is not due to break at all. With Negreanu being the old school poker play with live winnings to die for, Isildur1 typifies the young online breed of player. Who will come out on top? -- SY

This is ugly.12.50pm: Cooler sends Moneymaker to the railChris Moneymaker, in Barcelona as part of his 'world tour' of events, is out in the first level. It was a horrible hand as well, one that will hurt for many weeks. The Team PokerStars Pro had T♣9♣ and loved the T♥T♦9♦ flop. His opponent, Juan Manuel Copani, had A♠T♠ and all the money went in. Lovely. The turn? An innocent 3♠. The river? You guessed it, A♣ to give lucky Copani the bigger full house. That's an awful blow for Moneymaker, but he left the tournament floor with a rueful shrug of his shoulders. Let's hope he manages to enjoy some down time in this beautiful city. -- SY

1.50pm: ControversyA new rule for the EPT is in force at Barcelona, and it has got the backs up of several players. The new rule states that players must be at their seat when the dealer deals the first card to the first player at the table. If they are not, they are dealt out. Elsewhere, so long as players are in their seat when they receive their second card they can play on.Over in railer heaven corner - featuring Negreanu, Blom, Mercier, Mizzi, ElkY etc, there has been some heated debate. As if to prove their point, Mizzi was then dealt out for standing up and shaking a friend's hand when the first card was dealt.Negreanu is never one to keep quiet when something irks him. When he speaks, the powers that be generally listen."It's a dumb rule," he said. "I guarantee everyone hates it. So I can't stand up and have a picture taken for a fan, or go and sign and autograph. Instead I have to sit here."Mercier agreed, as did Mizi and Dmitry Vitkind. Vitkind even called over tournament boss Toby Stone to remonstrate, and Negreanu joined in."I know you don't like it," Stone said. "But it's the correct rule. It's the same for everybody."Negreanu was not happy, with even the lovely massage therapist working on his back failing to relax him. -- SY

3.08pm: Negreanu/Blom watchDaniel Negreanu was gazing off into the distance, head cocked to one side, muttering under his breath. You know what we're talking about, you've seen him do it on High Stakes Poker. The Canadian Team PokerStars Pro had 24,000 left in his stack and was musing over whether to call the river shove of Chris Lastiwka for 12,700. The board read 5♣6♦K♣3♥K♥ and with over 20,000 in the middle it was an attractive call to make. Negreanu raised his eyebrows and took a swig from his bottle. He passed."Big fold?" asked Dominik Nitsche."Yeah," replied Negreanu."King?" preseed Nitsche."No," said Negreanu. -- RD

If It Ain't Broke...Posted 24 minutes ago by EricRamsey • Level 5: 150-300, 25 ante Daniel Negreanu has been a bit grumpy today, and the foul mood began pretty much as soon as he arrived to play this afternoon. Most of his sourness comes regarding a few small rule changes to the EPT this year, and as is often the case, his views makes a lot of sense. Foremost in the changes is the fact that a player's hand is ruled dead if he's not in his chair when the first card is dealt. That differs from the TDA rule which allows for a player to play his hand as long as he's there when the button receives his last card. Also of note are a few subtle differences regarding the sharing of information and the showing of uncalled hands. After listening to them engage in a long conversation, we see that Negreanu and Jason Mercier don't seem to understand that rule change fully (and certainly not the logic behind it), but we haven't heard the official explanation from the staff. Suffice it to say that it represents another difference from the TDA rules, and another annoyance to the more experienced players in the field. And the way Negreanu and Mercier describe it, the change almost protects collusion rather than weeding it out. That first rule (about killing hands) was demonstrated rather pointedly as Negreanu and Mercier were in the middle of conversing. At adjacent tables, Mercier was standing up, looking over his shoulder to converse with his fellow Team Pro. While they were chatting back and forth and lamenting the new rules, Mercier was quietly dealt a hand, after which the dealer quickly pulled his cards into the muck. Just a moment after his hand disappeared, Mercier spun his head back around to see the rest of the table playing on without him."You could have told me you were dealing, bro," Mercier gave the dealer a 'what-the-?' look."Wait, you just got a dead hand?" Negreanu got all wide-eyed again. "That's absurd."Mercier could just throw his palms up to the sky with a shrug, sitting back down to avoid a repeat the next time around.Read more: http://www.pokernews.com/live-reporting/20...ona/main-event/

6.05pm: Negreanu doublesDaniel Negreanu has doubled up at the expense of Dominik Nitsche. The pair have tangled several times today but this time Negreanu has the advantage, moving up to 17,500 while leaving Nitsche with just 7,600.With the board reading 5♠J♦A♦6♥ Negreanu check-raised Nitsche who then put the Team PokerStars Pro all in. Negreanu called with A♣2♣ against Nitsche's J♥Q♠. The 7♣ on the river sent the chips to Negreanu. - SB

More Trouble in the CornerPosted 1 hour 30 minutes ago by EricRamsey • Level 6: 200-400, 50 ante "Turn card coming. Nine of diamonds," the dealer announced.A floorman walked by the table around this time, and Daniel Negreanu asked for a moment with him. "The dealer is announcing the cards. Is he supposed to do that?" Neither the floorman nor the dealer understood the problem at first, and there was a quick exchange in which the dealer and the floor agreed they could call the cards in both Spanish and English. "No, no," Negreanu tried again. "What's the rule? Is there a rule? Is he supposed to say, 'Nine of diamonds,' like that?"The floorman didn't seem to have an answer, shrugging and nodding slightly. "He can.""Yes, but is he supposed to?!" Negreanu was trying a bit harder. "Is there a rule?!""No," came the response."So they can do whatever they wanna do?" Negreanu was almost chuckling by now. The floorman nodded. "Do they even have to shuffle?!" No response that time.At the adjacent table, Jason Mercier had been a part of the whole conversation. Every now and then, he'd chime in with something like, "Daniel, they can do whatever they want to do!" or "No rules here." When the floorman informed Negreanu about the calling of the cards, Mercier was right there. "Yeah, they're even allowed to say things like, 'Oh look! The flush just came in.' ... 'Trips on board' ... 'Hope that didn't counterfeit you!'"Negreanu and Mercier are both laughing at the whole situation by now, but it's clear there's a little a little real frustration under the surface.Read more: http://www.pokernews.com/live-reporting/20...ona/main-event/

10pm: Despite outs, Negreanu outSuddenly dozens of faces turn to look towards one corner of the tournament room, like a centre court crowd waiting for the serve. Daniel Negreanu is standing up, eliminated from the main event, but the crowd wants to be sure. "It looked like a lot of outs," said Negreanu smiling, as he gathered his belongings. He moved all-in on the turn for 13,400 with the board showing 3♠J♦4♥T♠. Negreanu had turned over K♠Q♠ for straight, flush and gin rummy draws, against Benjamin Maerefat's A♥J♠. The river though would send the Canadian to the rail, coming 8♦. - SB
