This Forum Is Deader* Than Ub

Recommended Posts

What can be done to keep this forum active? With no regulation in the USA, it's hard for anything to be relevant other than gossip and FTP news. I thought about starting a well but I've already done that. Anyone have any ideas?

Watching the internet 'evolve' has been such a fascinating thing. I remember mailing lists and newsgroups, then onto early incarnates of BBS', then onto the forum format we have today. All forums fall into one of four categories.1) The Standard Bearers- the preeminent forums in their broader topic. These were established in the late 90's, early 2000's.. If you own one in a commercially relevant topic, congrats. Being the preeminent forum is a VERY lucrative proposition. In poker, the standard-bearer is 4 (and ironically enough, they flouted that small window of opportunity where poker affiliates were paying ungodly money in favor of using their reach to upsell books... LOL)2) The "alternatives": These are forums that either have a tighter focus on a subtopic, or attained a bit of critical mass in spite of larger, more relevant forums and have been able to hang on to a meaningful user base. In poker, Pocket Fives would be an example of this. Depending on the lucre (read: ad spends) of the topic they serve, even being #2 or #3 can still bring in the bucks. 3) Tertiary forums. They have a core user base, they're usually VERY niche but they're still viable, albeit lightly trafficked, small and with very limited growth. If they have enough traffic to necessitate a dedicated server, they may not even pay the bills. These are usually run as labors of love- "hobby forums". Some would argue that FCP is this, but really, it's... 4) The "Come and Gone" forums; places that 'once were', but have since been mostly abandoned. Sadly, that's what FCP is today. In this same category we also add the "Never Were" forums- places that were started with big ideas in tow, they might have seen a initial burst of interest but never really 'took' and died off quickly thereafter. There really is no 'fixing' FCP. The glory days are gone. General interest in poker has been on a downslope since a few years back. After Bobby Fisher beat Spassky, there was a huge burst of "public interest" in Chess for about 5 years... and in time, that died off too, leaving only the hardcore enthusiasts. Poker went through a boom, now a bust, just like Chess. FCP just can't compete with the alternatives, in terms of serving 'poker information' to whoever remains. As a DN fan forum, there was that period for a couple years where Negreanu was on TV 5 times a day, but that isn't the case anymore. Even if it were, I don't think he's seriously posted in the forums since 2007, the time between blog posts now spans months, rather than days... and even if he started seriously interacting with everyone once again, would anyone really care? What's left are the dregs; old lizards like me who, for whatever reason, made their nest in the ruins and lurk in the shadows, waiting for prey to stumble by...

I think talking about live poker experiences is something that can be interesting. Live casinos are full of interesting characters and situations that can be entertaining to share.I think I'll start a thread like that and include my suicidal heroin addict story.

I realize we just finished the WSOP but, Daniel taking 2 month sabbaticals, during the most interesting time of the year, undoubtedly does not help traffic on HIS site.

Come to the Hockey Forum
I'd be interested to know the percentage of total posts on this site that are generated in the hockey forum on a good day. I wouldn't be remotely surprised if it's above 50%.

I agree Daniel needs to be more active on the forum whether it's strategy talk going back a year or 2 where he posted hands and ask us what we would do and why, with our thoughts behind playing that hand that way or get hardy discussions going again like the disclosure rule, what people foresee in televised poker events or maybe a thread that posts live events in the smaller casino's that us normal people play. Just a few thoughts. that radio show he did on Quad Jacks was over 6 hours and it was damn interesting both on the funny side and learning a few things. the other thing was FCP and PokerVT had great runs in this year's WSOP. I watched Rdogs, Fluff's and Looshle FT's perhaps they can chat about that experience.looshle you amazed me the most, what I saw was your patience that was the key but I know you played extremely well maybe you can talk about some of those key hands, or offer some other advice.I still go over hands with Fluff now,or in a poker discussion group I belong to on skype as I am always working on my game and will be forever as I don't see myself being that good. But one thing is for sure my game improved because of FCP and some of my friends like Fluff, Kobe2odom8, diamonddixie, donk4life and OTHERSMost of all I miss the tourneys that I played with my friends, the Neg Open has not been the same from 5 years ago and it pains me to see it cancel like it has been. I watch the lobby and won't join in when it's just Gov and Bob. I think we can bring this forum back to a level where it can be fun and a great learning experience. any ways boys flame away at my grammar and spelling. Just agree it has been dead and needs to get back to basics by increasing the strat talks and not in the strat section as some people just don't go there.

I like this thread. Maybe we should change the title to the "official brainstorming thread" instead of "this forum is deader"I think it is going to take a long time for this forum to get back to where it was. Basically the "poker boom" is why this forum got popular, and Daniel was one of the faces of poker which brought me here. Most of the regular posters from 2-5 years ago aren't coming back so there obviously needs to be some new blood. (edit) basically what amscray said. The main problem (imo) is that there is not a huge rush of non-poker players wanting to hear more about poker right now. Once online poker is legalized in the US I can see things getting better with new people becoming interested in learning how to play. Right now, I guess it is important for regular posters to try and keep it going. Some kind of promotion would be cool, but it is hard to do that without US players being able to play online.I agree with Rose with hearing about wsop final table experiences (although it isn't going to happen with rdog lol).

The only forum that seems to have any traffic now is 2+2. P5s only has a little activity and PokerVT's forum is way worse than this one as far activity goes. I think some of the guys with a lot of live experience posting about live situations and hands and other things of interest or knowledge is a good idea. I just got back from the World Poker Open in Tunica where my runbad followed me but nothing interesting happened.
