Nhl Scoring Change

Recommended Posts

Forgive me if this has been discussed before...I think the point system needs an update and I'm looking at something similar to the point format in the EPL (that's the Premier League).Currently, a team gets 2 pts for a win, whether it be regulation time, overtime or shootout. A losing team gets 0 for reg time loss and 1 pt for an OT or shootout loss. Points should be available, as follows:3 points for a regulation win2 points for an OT win2 point for a SO win0 points for a regulation loss1 point for an OT loss1 point for a SO loss3 points available each game. This system rewards teams that win in regulation time. I think this will juice things up some.Is this a crazy idea? Stupid? I'll be honest and say I haven't put tons of thought into this, but it seemed like something worth considering.Standings would be as follows:Phi 123Bos 109TB 109Pitt 113Wash 106Mtl 103NYR 100Car 93---------Buf 87Atl 85Tor 85Fla 82NJ 82NYI 75Ott 66

I personally hate 3 pt games, but your theory is a little better than what we have now. Its so dumb now where some games are 2pt games, others are 3 pt games..All games should give out the same number of points.I would prefer 3, 2, 13pts for regulation win2pts for OT win1 pt for SO winNO pts for losing. My preferred way is to have no OT and Shootout and have ties.

I've bolded the crucial part for me. What would be the point of changing the scoring system?

Teams just need to try harder to win outright so the extra point is moo.
Yeah, I think the incentive for the extra point is what's giong to boost things. At the same time, Serge's suggestion should get smoe consideration. Honestly, why should a team get rewarded for losing?

Its just dumb...Someone asks "did the Leafs win last night"...Well they lost but not really, they got 1 pt...Its either you lose or you win IMO.Also this year there is a new rule that takes effect..In the event of a tie, SO wins are taken away from the win column to determine the team that is ranked higher.

Excuse me?
Which part? The first part of the post is my tongue and cheek comment that teams should play hard for the win thus not having to worry about the 1pt for OT/SO loss. But obviously no team just plays for the 1. I was being a bit of an arse with that comment. The next part is the word moo. The whole point is moo. From a cow's point of view.

3 points for regulation or OT win. 2 points for SO win.1 point for SO loss.0 points for regulation or OT loss. Or take out the SO and only have ties. 1 point each. Make OT 10 minutes long with a 5 minute intermission.
