I don't think they've updated the standings yuet today. I'm still showing 2 as well.

I have this feeling that the Devils are about to go on a roll with Kovalchuk scoring in bunches..It has to happen right?

Wouldn't surprise me.I doubt it starts tonight. Pens should be amped tonight. Guerin retirement ceremony before the game to get them in the mood, plus nobody ever likes the Devils, so I think they'll want to take advantage of them while they can.We talked about the Devils a few days ago, and I mentioned the injuries they had. I looked again today and like 3 of their regular defenseman have been on the IR for almost the whole year. No wonder they're having such a tough time. No Brodeur, no Parise, their captain out for a bit, half of their starting defensemen, etc. And that's not even mentioning Kovalchuk's struggles.

thats what happens though when you handcuff yourself with a massive contract..

You really think they'd be in better shape if Kovalchuk was making 5 million instead of 6.66? I don't get how this contract has any affect on the Devils' situation. It's massive in the sense that it's ridiculously long, but his cap hit is far lower than it would have been if he took a 5 year deal. Don't forget, he had never struggled like this before signing the contract. He was a legit 50 goal scorer in his late 20s.One of their many problems, IMHO, is just bad injury luck. Any team that loses their starting goalie (and possibly the best in the history of the league), and their best forward is going to struggle to some extent. Now remove half of their top 6 defensemen and tell me how you think any other team in the league would do. No team has the depth to overcome that for very long. You have to get lucky and have younger guys in your system be ready at the right times, etc.

I generally agree with you, but those days where they had to play 13 guys or whatever really messed them up. But ya, I think everyone is underestimating the hit they took with the injuries to Volchenkov, Salvador and Parise. Zach, you have Kovy in AHL right? trade? :club:

I do, and would consider moving him if I got fair value, and not some low-end value because of his struggles.I think the dressing <20 guys or whatever had more to do with other bad contracts than just Kovalchuk's, but that was definitely just poor cap management. It only last 2 or 3 games though, so it's not like it's THE reason they're 14th in the East.

Yes generally when you sign a player to a 6.66 cap hit its not bad..But when you sign a player to that cap hit, and it literally gives you no room , then its bad.Other teams get injuries they deal with...Flyers are missing the goalie that took them to the Stanley Cup Final, they replaced him with a rookie who has been just as good.

Yeah, their cap mismanagement is definitely part of the reason they've struggled, I just don't think it's even close to the primary reason. The Flyers got lucky, lol. They got lucky that career backup Michael Leighton even somehow developed into a Finals goaltender, then got lucky to sign some random undrafted guy who is playing over his head this year, behind a stacked team. Just my opinion.

I figured out Lou's plan..Its called a mini tank...Have one brutal year where you finish in the lottery, while still having a great nucleus of talent..You dont have to tank for 3-5 years...You add a top draft pick to Kovy, Parise and the rest of them..Instant cup contender..Maybe....
