FCP Bob 1,312
This doesn't surprise me, I was wondering how Poker Stars was going to react to the State Supreme Court decision since the law in Washington is pretty explicit about playing online from the State being illegal and they were counting on the law being overturned by the courts. That still might happen but first the Supreme Court of the US would have to agree to hear the appeal and then rule on it and that could take a few years. This is going to be the problem if poker law is left in State hands and not at the National level. You can bet any State laws regulating poker in state are going to carry provisions making it illegal to play on any site that isn't approved by the State and if the California proposed legislation is any indication they are going to set up uncompetitive situations with very limited choice for players. Balloon guy 158
A few years back Washington State Supreme court ruled that balloon released were not harmful to the environment and therefore legal.Ever since then me and some buddies in the business refer to balloon releases as dolphin kills.Weird they would be so fact based on that decision and not on the poker one. UncleHoot 0
Honestly, the big problem here is that a large percentage of public officials do not understand what poker is. Is it gambling? Hell yes! But it's skill-based gambling, which I believe sets it far apart from slots and other types of gambling.Personally, I would not care one bit if any legislation passed in the US did not allow anything except poker. How they would define "poker" is a good question, but it has been done. But politicians seem to really f**k that kind of stuff up, for whatever reason. It's just too bad they didn't leave well-enough alone, much like porn on the Internet*, instead of trying to make it illegal or whatever the heck they did. Unfortunately, poker is already all screwed up, thanks to laws like Washington's, and the UIGEA. This is why I'm very uneasy about the prospect of online poker becoming "Legal" in the US. I just have to believe that it will become so over-regulated that we may all hate it. Repeal the UIGEA, tell the Justice Dept that it's not "Illegal" to play, and be done with it. Allow Harrah's to open up shop in Antigua, or whatever... Oh, and Washington needs to repeal that stupid law as well...*Yes, there were a couple attempts to make that illegal too, but luckily, they realized they couldn't stop it, and hopefully figured out that it wasn't as big of a "threat" as they thought. Balloon guy 158
Online poker..it's like online porn, it's not really that bad...For some reason I don't see this being a good catch phrase for the PPA

tbrick412 0
the problem is online poker will never NOT be a state issue. any legislation passed at federal level will include state optouts, and you can bet that there will be plenty of states who either consider it "immoral" or want to develop their own instate site and get a bigger chunk of the revenue to themselves. It happens because ****ing religious groups are allowed to have massive influence on political candidates, which in turn impacts voters and legislation like this bullshit garbage.Legislators at state levels tend to have no idea how ****ing economics works. What's going to make more money, keeping it as an instate site where all the money stays in the state and gets raked by the state, or having one where more money can come into the state, people go buy more shit, and sales tax does its thing? ****ing clowns. It's been on the books for 4 years. But we live in a different world today, than we did when this law and the UIGEA were passed. The concept of "Online Poker" doesn't scare as many people as it did then. My mom is proud of me now*, but initially she was pretty concerned. Likewise, now my brother plays, whereas 4-5 years ago, he wasn't so sure about what I was doing either. Those are just anecdotes, but I have to believe that the word has been spreading. Most have realized that it doesn't destroy most people's lives. I think this will continue to change over time.People in WA really need to start calling their legislators and keep calling them daily. Being a PITA is the only way to get these types of things changed. (I'm not saying be a "dick", but they should load up their legislators mailboxes with tons of PPA-type material to encourage their legislators to repeal that stupid law.)FTP will soon follow suit. UB's about to go extinct anyway, so they probably won't do anything.*Yes, I'm 41 years old, but she's still my Mommy.
