SuitedAces21 2,723
tim wakefield, you sound like my buddy last night. same guy was criticizing Inception when we got out of theater. do you hate everything too?
bigkg 0
All four of the guys doing the deal, the abusive husband, and the Italian from Chicago. Like, the death of the Italian could have been a big important and meaningful moment, but it wasn't because we didn't know him well enough to really care. I was like, 'Oh yeah this guy's about to get blasted, too bad, he was kinda funny.' It was like the Godfather, except without taking the time to make us care. The four guys making the deal were just Rothstein's muscle; I don't think you're supposed to really care about them. The Italian guy was killed by Torrio (the other Chicago guy) to open up the liquor business in Chicago.
timwakefield 68
do you hate everything too?Um, no. Every show I watch must now be measured against the intricacy, honesty, and excitement of The Wire. I simply found a number of flaws in an episode which I also very much enjoyed, as I said a number of times. You thought it was totally cool when 2 guys with shotguns fired like 8 shots? It just seemed stupid and incredibly sloppy. That, or it was going for some crazy theatricality where we're only seeing an impression of what happened, rather than seeing what actually happened. But that didn't make sense either in context.
BigDMcGee 3,354
You thought it was totally cool when 2 guys with shotguns fired like 8 shots? It just seemed stupid and incredibly sloppy. No, I just don't care. I got over the "ZOMG HOW MANY BULLETS ARE IN THAT CLIP" thing when I was 11.Thought it was a great episode, I love the mood, the sets, the atmosphere, the writing, the dialog, the themes they were setting up. I agree that it was a little too busy for a first episode, but I think they wanted to start things off with a bang, and what the ****, martin was directing this one, so he probably wanted to get some cracks in. The thing that I am most excited about, and this is pure speculation, but Titanic thompson HAS to be a character in this, either in name or a character based on him. he was tried for Rothstein's murder ( because Ti cheated Roth out of a million dollars at poker ands roth didn't pay up, so he apparently killed Rothstein), and in general is the greatest character in gambling history, was a friend of capone, all the gamblers of this age. God I would love it if Ti was a recurring character.
timwakefield 68
No, I just don't care. I got over the "ZOMG HOW MANY BULLETS ARE IN THAT CLIP" thing when I was 11.In general I don't care, I'm not counting shots when somebody's firing a revolver, but come on. A double-barreled shotgun holds 2 shells. I'm happy to suspend my disbelief but when that hypothetical guy with his hypothetical revolver unloads his 36th shot without re-loading it's gonna be hard to ignore. My dad was the kind of guy who brought that shit up in movies all the time, and it annoyed the crap out of me, so i probably subconsciously rebelling against him by not caring about it. I also like flamboyant black athletes for the same reason, who do not just shut up and do their job.

timwakefield 68
and I don't know how attached we were supposed to be to the italian immigrant who can't speak english and the wife beater. It wasn't that we were attached to them, it's just that it felt like there were too many dramatic murders crammed into a very short period. It might have been more interesting if we had gotten attached to the Italian before he was murdered though, was really my point. There were six murders (or three separate scenes of murder) and none of them were particularly fascinating or shocking.
GWCGWC 83
What about the 3(?) year old girl that started crying when the preggo wife was being abused? That wasn't acting and I found it disturbing. Whatever they did to get that reaction couldn't have been good. also, HOLY BUDGET!
David_Sklansky 1,904
I watched the first few episodes of True Blood but never got in to it. Is it like the Wire where you have to watch half a dozen episodes or so to get into it? It seems to have caught on.What the Wire was to managing a massive cast of morally compelling and authentic characters, True Blood is to inflaming female rape fantasies. But, if you like terrible writing, cheesiness, fairies, magic and rape, it might be just the ticket. If you watched it with your girlfriend, and let her call you Eric, she'll probably let you break the skin, or hang her from your pullup bar in the doorway with her nylon belt she never wears anymore. I've seen every episode. It's the worst.

ajs510 122
Wow, I didn't even recognize Dabney Coleman until I saw his name in the cast list just now. Kelly MacDonald too, haven't seen her in anything since she was the jailbait in Trainspotting. It's a pretty good show, not the breathtaking achievement it's been billed as but certainly watchable. Paz de la Huerta alone bought the show another two episodes of my attention. Voldy's too, I'll bet. <grin>
David_Sklansky 1,904
Just watched...I'm excited. If they could figure out a way to write Rachel Nichols into the show, I would be all-in.

That wasn't acting and I found it disturbing. Whatever they did to get that reaction couldn't have been good.I actually thought that same thing, but then I realized exactly what they did to make her cry: she simply witnessed her pretend father pretending to hit her pretend mother, and it was damn scary. I think just acting out the scene and the yelling and hitting of her 'mom' would be more than enough to get that reaction. Dunno if that changes it much, but that's my theory.
