GWCGWC 83
Just start with Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones and Jimi Hendrix. This should give you at least a full years worth of discovery. WTF was The Edge doing in that movie?
FCP Bob 1,312
During the closing credits of It Might Get Loud they were performing The Weight which was a The Band song. The Band is another group you should explore and for sure you should watch the movie "The Last Waltz" which was directed by Scorcese where The Band were joined by a bunch of other great musicians for a concert in 1976. ajs510 122
Just start with Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones and Jimi Hendrix. This should give you at least a full years worth of discovery. WTF was The Edge doing in that movie? He's actually quite an incredible guitarist, I thought it was odd pairing him up with Jimmy Page in any capacity whatsoever, but after I watched the movie I really appreciated each of those guys individual talent. Napa, start tomorrow off with Jimi Hendrix' cover of All Along the Watchtower...it will change your life.

Bob - Wolfgangsvault.com has the complete concert. I love me some Ronnie Hawkins...Neil Diamond sure was out of place IMO. Richard Manuel's voice is cashed. Can't download it though. There are some other amazing live concerts on that site. And yes, I did print and scan. Was too lazy to figre out how to print screen, save, etc. Strat, TY for pointing that out. Better refill that presciption.
leftygolfer 7
Here's some from the 60's to start.1. Beatles - I can't think of any bad Beatles album, so listen to any. My favorite is Let it Be.2. Beach Boys - Pet Sounds. More pop music than some of the R&R here, but truly ground breaking stuff.3. Bob Dylan - Highway 61 Revisted. 4. Rolling Stones - Let it Bleed. Monkey Man is one of my favs. Beggars Banquet is also worth a look.5. The Doors - The Doors. Ray Manzarek's organ is original, as there is no bass player in the group.6. Jimi Hendrix - Are you Experienced? and Electric Ladyland. A master of the guitar.7. The Who - Tommy. The first rock opera. My fav band of all time.8. Cream - Disraeli Gears. Clapton, Bruce and Baker. Also look at Blind Faith - Blind Faith. Only one album, but some strong stuff; the successor to Cream with Clapton, S Winwood, Grech and Baker. 9. Jefferson Airplane - Surrealistic Pillow. One of the first psychedlic CA bands.10. Neil Young - Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere. Canadian who brought folk and rock together with a distinctive voice. Down by the River is another song at the top of my list. Crosby, Stills and Nash - CSN (debut album). Widely considered one of the best debut albums.11. Sly and the Family Stone - Stand!. Early funk and rock. How can you not like a band that puts out a song, Don't call me Nigger, Whitey.12. Chicago (aka Chicago Transit Authority) - CTA. Debut album was a double album with some horns and jazzy overtones. Do a monster version of I'm a Man.I don't have any specific albums, but look at the Kinks and CCR ( Creedence Clearwater Revival) as some other significant bands. Their "Best Of" package is the best place to check out.As with any list, I am sure I have left some out. Let me know when you are done with these, and I'll put together a 70's list. timwakefield 68
I mean, Jimi Hendrix tho. He really should be your starting point. Electric Ladyland. Also check out some live stuff, Band of Gypsies, Live at Woodstock, Live at Berkley, Live at Monterey Pop are all pretty brilliant.Maybe the most famous live rock performance of all-time? Jimi burns his guitarThe really crazy thing about it is that Monterey Pop was literally his first show in the United States. He got big in England first, despite being American. His first fucking show, and he basically steals the rest of the decade right then and there, at least as far as rock music. And his stage presence - seriously, this is his first US show (after scoring a hit with Hey Joe), it's in front of like 8 zillion people, and he just owns it.Did he just play that whole verse behind his back? Yes.
