Convicted Felon Will Go To Jail If He Can't Win At Poker

Recommended Posts

Convicted felon and highly motivated poker player Samuel McMaster Jr. (image courtesy of KRQE)It sounds a little like the plot of a bad Hollywood drama, but it's the real-life story of a convicted felon who must win at poker, or go to jail. Samuel McMaster Jr. was found guilty of 26 felony counts of fraud related to falsely selling securities. As part of his conviction, he's been ordered to pay the victims back. The interesting thing is that he's a professional gambler, and poker is his only legitimate way of earning cash.As a result, McMaster Jr. has the court's permission to leave his home state of New Mexico to travel to poker tournaments, as he attempts to raise the $7,500 per month he owes in restitution. If he misses two of those payments in the next six months, it's off to jail, for up to 12 years. If he runs good and is successful in making six payments of $7,500 to his victims, he's may receive a more lenient jail sentence. The prosecutor, Phylis H. Bowman said this, about the unusual arrangment: "There's nothing to indicate that he's a violent threat to society. So based upon those factors, that's what determines conditions of release. It has nothing to do with profession."

pretty detailed article by ABC News on this .... http://abcnews.go.com/Business/nm-poker-pr...ory?id=11343532One thing that was interesting in the article (dated August 9th (today))It's not likely McMaster can qualify for the 2010 World Series of Poker Main Event that begins Tuesday. McMaster will be allowed to leave the state to play in tournaments as part of the deal, O'Donnell said.

I've played with this guy quite a few times in Albuquerque and he's not so good at the 1/2NL poker. I'd be really surprised if he's a bread even player.
