Miami Heat Bandwagon Thread

I am a pretty big NBA fan. Malone and Stockton had each other and just had the misfortune of running into MJ. Hakeem got his when MJ was out of the NBA. Duncan had TP and Manu who are both superior to anything lebron has had to date. Barkely criticizing Lebron is rich considering he engineered a trade away from floundering Philly to Phoenix (and got close but blocked by MJ). He also did the three amigos thing in Houston but they were all too old.It is almost impossible to win on your own without another HOFer especially now that the NBA is really deep due to the globalization of the game.I would have had zero problems with Lebron staying in Cleveland but it would have made his chances of ever winning a title really bad. And he would have ended up like Dan Marino....universally respected, a hero to his hometown fans, and constantly and unfairly diminished for not being able to do the nearly impossible.
your second part...is Gasol a HOF'er? Not to me. Am I wrong? your third part...very possible. But its really hard for me to think thats an absolute. He's only 25. Was there no chance that someone else was gonna pull a Lebron and think "I better go play there, cause I want a ring?" I mean, no chance at all that Paul/Melo/anyone else who fits would try it in Cleveland? I just dont think its as much a lock as everyone else does that Lebron couldnt have attracted some talent to Clev.question: Is there any doubt in your mind that this is Wade's team, and LeBron is his sidekick, as opposed to the opposite? Does LeBron ever "lead" a team to a championship the way MJ or Bird did? I dont think there can be any debating that, even if they had support, it was clearly MJ's team and Larry's team and especially Kobe's team?

Only by trade. No free agent is going to pick Cleveland.

I think, like the Showtime Lakers, that it will be Wade's team (like it was Magic's team) but people will understand that they dont win shit without Lebron (Kareem). And people remember both (Magic and Kareem (and Big Game James)) as big winners.I think Gasol could be a HOFer.....but then again they also have Odom and Bynum and Artest. It's a pretty loaded team. It is possible none of the other guys will make the HOF but all 4 are > anyone in Cleveland. I should be careful throwing around absolutes.

This. I have to agree with what SA21 said.....any random 25 year old picks Miami over Cleveland given the choice. Party cities have a huge advantage in the NBA.

Honestly, you really believe that? So winning and playing with the best player in the NBA is not more important than living in a "party" city like South Beach. So the friendship and need for rings only worked out cause Wade got drafted by South Beach?edit: How come no one signs with the Clippers? (looking fwd to the responses on this one! :club: )

Look at the history. The only non party cities that draw Free Agents well are the traditional powers (Boston and Chicago). Orlando, LA, NY (not lately), Miami and Texas always do well. This is not to say it COULDNT happen just that it is far less likely. Also, Miami won the offseason because Riley is a master and had the foresight to clear cap space for 2010 like it was his job (which it was I suppose). South Beach and no state income tax surely helped.Clippers have actually done ok in free agency. Most people avoid them because the owner is a cheapskate and everyone who goes there blows out a knee (probably coincidence but it is ****ing spooky at this point ask Blake Griffin).

I can't think of one star free agent that went to a non destination city (not counting free agents that re-sign with their original teams). Baron Davis recently signed with the Clippers because he is very much into the movie industry. I think he produced a movie a couple years ago. (I should see if he's on IMDB...yep, he's produced a few movies.) But players don't want to sign with the Clippers because Donald Sterling has zero interest in winning. He just likes the status of being an NBA owner.

I agree its less likely, but I think the Celtics draw cause of the history, and Orlando is not what I consider a party town at all, just a hot place with sometimes guys who like to go back to their roots. And while it would be a suprise to see an athelete choose to play in Cleveland, no one is picking NY these days cause they dont want to go their and lose all the time. It doesnt matter how much fun the city is, most atheletes dont want to play for a loser, hence the Clippers. If your real goal is winning, and so many atheletes say its what matters most, if Cleveland paid you close to max dollars, and Lebron was there, wouldnt a top player think its a good opp to get a ring? Even if it was for only 2/3yrs? Personally, I think most of these guys also prefer the party cities that they DONT live in, for lots of reasons.

I wouldnt call that the Knicks first choice, would you?Id say thats along the lines of Plan D for the Knicks, and he went there because it was the last of the big dollar options for him.Was anyone else offering that much money? I could be wrong...awesome. Amare+Paul+Melo on its way.its great being in Toronto having to face the Yanks+Sox in baseball, and now the East Coast Division All Stars in basketball.

Actually, I think it was his first choice (maybe after Phoenix). It's hard to say who was offering what, but I'm sure Miami would've given him Bosh's contract if Bosh didn't go there. New Jersey, LA, and Chicago probably would've all given him that money too.

What are these players supposed to do if their organizations aren't doing anything to help them win? Are they expected to sit and waste their careers in bad situations? That's loyalty? Seems cowardly to me.
I dunno about cowardly. Dumb maybe, but not really cowardly.

Hakeem got his when MJ was out of the NBA.
Those Rocket teams were beating the '94 Bulls, and Jordan came back and failed to get to the Finals in '95, although he was still in baseball shape. And someone said something about the Bulls in the 90's not being stacked. When you have Jordan, Pippen, and Rodman as they did '96-'98 on the same team you're stacked. They may have been the best defensive team in the history of the league when you consider their offensive efficiency on turnovers and defensive stops.

Why are you so sure the Rockets would have beaten the Bulls with Jordan? They were a very good team without him; I think having the greatest player ever might've helped some. And come on with the Jordan failed to get to the Finals in '95 argument. He was out of the NBA for 18 months before coming back; he was clearly not the same player that year. I remember his first game back against Indiana where he had a breakaway and he went for one of his signature dunks and just barely got high enough to get it over the rim. He had no basketball legs then. (Sidenote: They use this dunk at the end of Space Jam. I always thought that was funny because it's possibly his least impressive dunk ever.)Is Rodman the defensive equivalent to Bosh on offense? Probably. I don't know if Rodman was the defensive stud he was from his Piston days, but he was still pretty damn good.

Hmmmm. I dont know. They could barely get by Ewing's Knicks with Starks choking like a dog.

I have said they were clearly more stacked than Lebron's Cavs but since MJ Pippen and Rodman were all old at that point I dont see them being stacked like the great teams of the 80s were. The league was also a little diluted at the time.

The Maloof Brothers own both the Sacramento Kings and the Palms Casino.I think they've wanted to move the team to Vegas for a while now.
That is actually not true. They want to keep the Kings in Sacramento and have been fight tooth and nail for a new arena for years. They know that they have an extremely loyal fan base here. There is too much to do in Vegas, a basketball team would get lost in the shuffle.Football would work in Vegas though.
Do they still own the Kings? For some reason I thought they no longer did.I always figured that was what they were after.
Yes they are, however they are not the majority owners everyone thinks they are. They never have been.

starting a thread about the miami heat when a perfectly good one already exists because you don't want to be perceived as a bandwagon fan? Douche!I had a funny dream last night. I dreamt that the miami heat were being moved to buffalo and a friend of mine started a "save our heat" campaign, to support them and try and get them to stay. First off, it shows how much I listen to the dan lebatard show since I never have and probably never will live in miami. But more importantly, how freaking hilarious would it be after the circus Lebron, wade and bosh made out of the free agency, if the Miami heat got transformed into the buffalo cold. Instead of taking his talents to south beach, lebron would end up taking them to north snowdrift and end up in a frigid rust belt town even worse than cleveland ( no offense buffalo-ers)

The bandwagon thread is for bandwagon fans. There is nothing funny about Buffalo.

I'm a Jew, words don't hurt me. I am just excited the Heat thread will have some action this year (either thread I guess). Usually, it's just me talking to myself.

I'm sure Toronto is a lovely city, but you just can't compete with south beach. I remember like two years ago when the Max Kellerman show out of NYC was still on the air, he was talking about lebron coming to new york as a done deal. If you haven't listened to max's show, he's extremely New York centric, and considers every other city in the country to be a culturally inferior cow town. He thought NYC was the heart of basketball culture, and there's no way Lebron would go anywhere else. Except, he said, he can't really argue with miami. Miami was the one place where he'd be like, " Okay, I understand". Because, it's really unlike anyplace else in the US, and the most beautiful women on the continent. I've heard Toronto is beautiful, multicultural city, but I mean, can you blame anyone for wanting to spend their famous, rich youth in a place like miami? It's not like he left Toronto for Oklahoma city or Detroit or something.

Yeah, also Bosh is a Texas kid. Maybe he is just tired of freezing his ass off 9 months a year.Miami is an awesome place to live when you are young. BigD, all New Yorkers secretly like Miami a little......that is why they all move here eventually.
