nutzbuster 7
I started a thread about this topic (not Eastgate but poker in general) a while ago, not sure if it was here.Basically asking if you were to win multiple millions of dollars, would you still play poker, and/or would you still have the drive to?It is an interesting question. I kinda get that he would give it up and agree that I would probably not have the same drive after a multi million $$$ score

I kinda get that he would give it up. Grinding can be a miserable way to make a living. Why does it have to be all or nothing? He doesnt have to grind for the rest of his life...But why not still play the main event? As a past champion its good for poker he played in a few tourneys a year...
Ship_itt 0
i hate this along with jerry yang playing like 4 tournies since he won...i think hitting a huge MTT like this and never playing again is like hit and running at a cash table. You are taking money away from the poker community, and i think its pretty lame

TrueAce13 18
lol if i would bink the main, you would never see my ass again. Except of course if its on vacation or at the bar
king_tanner 84
I'm not sure what his deal is with Stars, but I would keep playing if they were paying for my shit, even if I hated poker. Everytime I hear a young guy is retiring they start playing again within a month though.(edit) just read the article... it says pretty clearly that he is taking a break and not retiring. It's still pretty ballsy to take a break with that sponsorship deal (depending on the terms of the deal).
GOCUBSGO 77
I firmly believe that after some time away, he will miss it and shall return motivated. Best of luck to him, seems like he has a good handle on his finances and life in general.

I respect him for quitting and wanting to move on to other things.
grocery_mony 8
I would probally do the exact same thing in his shoes. Travel the world comped for a couple of years then get on with life. I suspect he will be playing a handful of bigger tournies every year for the forseeable future. Of course if he is walking away from major cash in sponsorships(I suspect he isnt) my mind might change.
Ship_itt 0
Because we all know that poker is controlled socialism. Their money, they can do whatever they want with it. Really? He can do what he wants win the money he won. and poker will get its money from plenty of others. I respect him for quitting and wanting to move on to other things.LOL, i never said he 'couldnt' do it. All i said was that it sucks. It takes tons of money out of the poker world and most of those big winners are huge fish. (jamie gold, jerry yang, etc) Obviously he is not breaking any laws by living the dream with his millions
Shark527 0
It takes tons of money out of the poker worldNot really. Besides the occassional TV appearance, I think he just played out bare minimum of his contract with Stars. The poker world won't really miss him.
Chris-LFC 0
If i was him i'd just play online now and again from the luxury of a beautiful beach where no one can find me.
myenemy 0
I know Eastgate was supposedly a pro before winning but who knows to what extent that was erally serious. Like was he just an out of work guy who played a lot of poker? Doesnt matter. Point is, for someone who didnt have a life invested in it (I.E. Negreanu, Ivey, etc.), after winning $9M I imagine the prospect of grinding it out at a poker table for the next 60 years is probably not that appealing. Although he got super lucky, as does anyone who wins the ME, after that its not like winning lotto, its hard, tedious work being a poker player.
Mercury69 3
I figure he can do what he wants. He won the $$$ and now he has other interests. I don't think he owes anything to anybody.

The poker world won't really miss him.um, you are agreeing with me sir. You are helping prove my point. lol. Since he won, he plays the bare minimum of his contract etc. SO, he is taking MILLIONS of dollars out of the poker world. We will not miss him, we miss the money.
TrueAce13 18
your really saying you would keep your same grind on if you binked the main?! lets be real, you would play the occasional live mtt, travel and enjoy life. I don't really see anything too wrong with this

Fade2241 0
being pissed about him leaving is silly because it's beyond your control. pretty sure him leaving poker is not going to be that bad for poker, either. poker doesn't need every ME champ as an ambassador to survive. poker also doesn't need him dumping money back into the community to survive/thrive. overreaccting ftw! You are taking money away from the poker community, and i think its pretty lameI have the opposite opinion, I think people like Jamie Gold who hit poker paydirt and then decided that because he can afford to play at the highest level means that he *should* play at the highest level (see: High Stakes Poker donkaments) is the 10th stage of stupidity. The dude is probably very near flat busted because his ego took over. Jerry Yang is brilliant in retrospect for being smart and not letting the money or the ego trip take over. I agree that you should keep your name out there and be a presence for the good of the game, but you can do that by playing the main event and a few other selected tournaments each year. You don't have to piss away your entire winnings trying to be Phil Ivey if you don't have the natural or the learned ability to do so.

If you are the tenth best player in the world , but you sit down at a table with the top 9 pros , you are an idiot ...IMOA lot of pros have egos, and they play the largest game possible even though its not the best strategy for them.
