So my little drummer boy son is a big ACDC fan, and an even bigger beatles fan. So on the Thursday of Superbowl weekend, I'm going to tell him I'm going to drive him to school. Instead, I'm driving

extending my Vegas trip by a couple days. Was booked to come home on the 17th, but have a Mazda meeting to attend in Toronto on the 20th, so I'm just flying right out of Vegas to Toronto on the 19th. I would have had to change my flight anyway when I final table the main event, so this works out better. Door to door travel Vegas to Lethbridge including 2.5 hour drive to Lethbridge at the end and customs etc.. is like 8 hours, so didn't make sense to go all the way home for a 24 hour turnaround and 10 hours travel to Toronto. Especially since my wife and kid are visiting her parents and won't be home till the 19th anyway, may as well spend those extra days in Vegas!

Got myself into the winning mindset before Vegas. Took my dad to the local casino tournament last night. 41 runners and I took it down for $670. It's a crapshoot with the blinds pretty much doubling every 20 minutes, but the final table was so weak tight that I took my stack from 17k to 100k (2k-4k, then 4k-8k blinds)and dominant chip lead with 4 left by just shoving all in 3 times per orbit and never seeing a flop or getting called. Then busted the last 3 players in consecutive hands, with the worst hand each time All in preflop, but never had more than about 1/3 of my stack at risk. A8 > TT, A4 > 99, 8T > A7

Best of luck, Dave. Make sure you take a minute to savour the surroundings. It's pretty awesome. And don't miss shuffle up and deal on day one. Cool moment!

So, had some complications with a wire transfer at the rio for my Main event buy in. Long story short, ended up meeting Jason Zucker outside the T mobile arena before the UFC fight to borrow 10k from him.

Anyway, I'm in for tomorrow at 11 AM. Updates on Twitter

Day 1 was a grind.

John Hennigan put me in some tough spots early, had to fold a K high flush on a paired board to a river check raise to 20k. Seeing how he played after that hand makes me think I made a bad fold. He spewed off most of his chips and was out at the beginning of level 2.

I cracked his AA with AK later when we both checked the turn for pot control on a KJ34 board. River was a K.

That was the only big hand I had all day. No sets, straights, flushes, 2-pairs. Built a decent stack in the first few levels just picking my spots and winning small pots. In the last 2 levels, 2 guys on my right were running good and accumulating a lot of chips and they started raising a lot of pots. It was tough for me to get anything going. Pretty much lost every pot I entered, nothing huge, just slowly chipped away.

There were definitely a few spots I played more passively than I'm used to to preserve my stack. Probably would have gone broke a few times otherwise, as a few combo draws missed and my aggressive opponents ended up having hands that would have called a shove.

I got down to 25k with an hour to play and went completely card dead. I decided not to force the issue. I was a bit tilted, I wasn't happy with my table image or my seat, so I decided to just make it to day 2 and get a fresh start with new opponents unless a really good opportunity presented itself. No such opportunities arose so here we are. Need 1 double up to have a workable stack. I'll be playing pretty aggressively early on day 2 and I suspect I'll either double or bust in the first level.
