Hero Call Or A Good Read?

Recommended Posts

Last saturday I played a local $75 buy in with $7500 added by the casino. You could only qualify online or buy in to the live event if you had played enough ranked hands on the casinos online poker site. I qualified for $8 online.155 runners15 places paidI am in seat 4 and he is in seat 9(max 9 to a table)I should first talk about two other previous pot which I personally feel may have influenced both mine and my opponents thinking in this hand.First hand against this same player I am first to act and I limp(blinds are 75/150) with A-J suited(clubs). Everyone folds to him and he makes it 600. The small blind calls and I also call.Flop: 3-7-J RainbowI really just want to find out where I am here, once the small blind checks I bet 1500 into this pot. Our friend in seat 9 thinks about it and reluctantly passes. Small blind then raises for 4000 more. I have 8000 chips so this is practically an all in bet. The gentleman is between 50 and 60 years old, by no means a great player. Hes been running hot and has a stack of chips. I had just watched him smooth call pre-flop then check raise all in on another guy, when it came to showdown he had Q-Q. I folded and showed my hand.I did not want to go out early in a 10k stack event in the first couple of levels. I felt I was beat. I know I should have never shown this hand. The next hand was literally 2 hands later. When I was in the small blind with 6-6. Our friend in seat 9 made it 600 again. I called and we were heads up to the flop.Flop: 2-6-2(2 hearts)I check and he bets 800, I call. Turn comes J(h) and I check. He bets 1350. I think about it for a good while then make it 2700 hoping if he made the flush he pops it all in. Or if he has a high value heart then he takes a card off to try to make his hand on the river. I have already decided that if he just calls, I will check the river. My feeling is that if he misses the heart, he seems a very aggressive player and I expect him to try to win the pot with a big bluff. If he makes the flush, he will value bet it and I will move in.He folds and I decide to show my hand and I tell him I know he has absolutely nothing, but I was hoping I could get him to make a big play at the pot on the river if he could have missed a potential flush draw. The hand in question: About 20 minutes later.I have about 13000 chips, which is about average at the time. Blinds are 100/200.I am once again out of position in the small blind. This time its 8-8. He again raises, 700. I make the call and its heads up to the flop again.Flop: 7-6-T(2 clubs)I check hoping he bets(I like the flop). He checks behind and K(h) hits the turn. I check again and he bets 900. I was happy with the flop and unless the king specifically has improved him then I believe my hand is good. I call. River is 2(d) and I have already checked dark. He shoves in for 12000 chips. I sit there, thinking, what the hell? I know my check dark play has induced some crazy plays in its time and confuses a lot of people. But never this crazy.I sit there, hes got me covered by about 1500 chips. Its still early in the comp. Its a 40 minute drive home. Did I come here to throw my chips away like this? All I can think is why? He seemed so weak on the flop when he checked behind. And his play at the pot on the turn looked even weaker, how has the duece helped him? Why is he shoving if he has a part of this. I can tell you now if he bets 3000 here I am passing easily! I am convinced this is a stone wall bluff.I made the call for all my chips and flipped my 8-8 face up the moment my chips crossed the line. His faced dropped and his eyes opened and he mucked it. I got a couple of wows and a few brilliant calls from the rest of the table but none of that bothers me any. Im not making the call to look flash. I genuinely think I have the best of it and I want that pot.The guy runs around the card room bad mouthing my play to his friends. And as I got up to talk to my friend about what just happened he was apparantly bad mouthing my call to the rest of the table. He says to me when I return..."bit of a hero call wasnt it?"...I replied with..."listen, I didnt travel here, to go and donk all my chips off in a hand like that and then drive home again...Even more so I dont want to walk aaway from this table with the rest of you sat here saying what the hell was he doing there...I have to be absolutely certain to make a call like that. And I was!"Anyways I wound up bubbling when my flopped set got it in with an overpair which rivered a higher set. In the car on the way home my buddy told me it was a terrible call and even if I felt strongly he didnt have it. I should still pass a protect my tournament. He said, Imagine if the guy thinks hes bluffing with 9-9 and you donk him all your stack like that.Sorry for the long winded post. I just wanted to give as much information as I had available to me.Any comments would be appreciated. Thank you.

Its a hero call and good read when it works like this. If he has AK you're a donkey.Well played in this case. Sucks about the bubble.

Lesson one: Don't show your hand out of pride. As far as the hand goes. I guess it was a good call cause you are right but I don't think you are gonna be right here long term to make it profitable. I agree with your friend.

Hero call for sure... but your analysis of the hand backs up your call. I'm sure some players will tell you calling here is a horrible -ev decision most of the time, and many others will tell you think is simply a tournament hand that ended up coming down to a tell you had established in hope that your opponent was bluffing based on that tell.

You played every hand terribly.2nd, dont say things like MY CARDS WERE FLIPPED OVER THE SECOND MY CHIPS CROSSED THE LINE AND THEIR JAWS DROPPED followed by I WASNT TRYING TO LOOK FLASHY.You arent trying to "settle a debate" you are just wording it differently so you can post a brag thread. Obviously on the last hand you made a good read. It's pretty obvious when YOU WIN THE POT. These lame ass "look at me" posts are ridic annoying, especially when youve played all 3 hands pretty bad.Man that AJ hand. ewwwwwwww

Im sorry if you think thats my intention. Its not I can assure you.The reason I flipped my hand over was I just want to get it over and done with. If hes got it I just want to know ASAP and get out the door.I think 95% of hands played in that tournament would be called bad by you internet guys. Almost every bet is too high just for a start.I would appreciate if you explained your thoughts a bit though. I never claimed to be Phil Ivey. I have loads to learn. If you think I played bad, explain how, what did I do wrong and what should I have done differently? You can say what you like about if im bragging, check my post history, I havent made one in years. I had a heated debate with a friend on the hand and I would like some input. If you think Im bragging to people I have never met or ever will meet then theres not much I can do about that is there. I would just suggest that I would have been here many times over the last few years to do the same. No?

Don't let it get under your skin. Some people here are really jaded and don't take kindly to certain types of phrasing, etc. In fact, some people can be downright arseholes about it, but what are ya gonna do? It's the Internetz!

You're right about the way he played the hands but i'm not sure if his intention was to make a brag post. I think he just did a crappy job of articulating what he wanted to say.

I am interested to hear what people think I did wrong.I thought I made a good lay down with the A-J. Felt like I had a good read of the situation with the 6-6. Obviously beginning to re-evaluate my decision with the 8-8.Please, if you have something constructive to add about the way I played all 3 I would like to hear it.

Don't be sorry you posted. Just be prepared, that when you post a question on an internet forum, some folk won't agree with you and won't necessarily suger coat their words.

I think there was clearly an element of a brag post in here. If he was truly thinking about getting out of there if he was wrong on his call or if he was worried about being embarrassed about the call, then why flip his cards up at all. He was calling the bet. The other guy has to show first. If the other guy shows a bigger hand, he mucks. His rush to gets his cards flipped and all certainly makes it look like the expected kudos for making a good call were part of his calculus

You essentially had the nuts, you put the guy on "nothing" and then raised him...

I was trying to get value out of the hand. Hoping hes got 1 heart and then will likely take a look at the river. Thus building the pot to the point where I think he would make a move.Obviously I flopped the 2nd nuts so its not exactly a tough poker decision. I felt like if I smooth called again on the turn I am essentially playing my hand face up and I would be scaring him out of bluffing a potential river card. By raising I am hoping to be representing a hand like a medium/high flush or 2 pair(pair of 2s on board) and that if a 4th heart hit the river he may try a big bluff. As it turned out he passed to the turn raise and we didnt see a river. All I can do is explain why I made the turn raise. And that was to possibly look weaker than I actually was, if that makes sense.

If he's going to put more chips in the middle, why raise him and show strength. I mean shouldn't you look like you might be drawing too so that he will try and bluff almost all rivers if he's that kind of player? Then you can pile on the aggression and get "value" on the river.
