Hi guys.Been a longtime lurker on these forums, and am just starting out in 6max. The following are a few hands from my first session that I would really appreciate some comments on. A couple I don't like how I played, and it's only after playing the hand I realised this. I guess I'd like to see people's opinions and see if they agree with what I think having reviewed the hand(s). I must learn to think more at the time, hopefully that will come.Anyways......Hand 1 - Am I right to call here? Due to the number of callers, I think I have enough implied odds? Cheers for all the responses. It's nice to know I appear to be in the right area with these decisions. The pocket 8's hand was certainly the one I liked the least, I think that check folding is probably the best play there. Certainly no need to call the raise. With regards to trystero's post (sorry, not sure how to post the quote), could you please expand on getting it in on the flop due to the villain being shortstacked. If the turn doesn't come another Jack, I'm not sure if I would have continued here.Ninja Ace, is one hand per post the preferred method of posting, or just not as many as five? :club: Cheers- Redzzz

If this is indeed true, don't call the raise if you're just hoping to hit a 3 or 6 outer.

What I mean is that since he's shortstacked, he's probably bad, and if he's bad, he's very capable of raising worse than TPTK on that board. I'd say his range includes flush draws, worse jacks, and some random draws like QT. Of course it also includes better hands like 99. Because he's short, we don't have to worry about losing a huge pot with only one pair. We can evaluate the strength of our hand against his range, conclude that it's ahead, and just put him all-in on the flop and live with the results. That way we also prevent ourselves from being pushed off the winner on a later street. Like you say had the jack not come you might've folded. That's really bad. You would've been getting better than 2-1 - you cannot fold. What would you have done on a king turn? Possibly folded the winner. What's interesting is that if you felt you were behind on the flop, then the jack changed nothing. If he has 99/44/J9 then you're still way behind...the only hand that the turn counterfeited was 94, and that's obviously unlikely.

With the min. check raise on the flop, is it not likely he makes this play with a draw or even a worse jack. If the turn then does not complete the flush or straight would he be likely to push all-in here?Having said which, I guess if this is my thinking, I should be raising him all-in on the flop? Also how likely is it he holds J9 here, considering he only limped preflop? I think this is why I only called the min raise, to wait for the turn and re-evaluate.- Redzzz

Thanks Trystero. I don't believe at the time I had considered the price I was getting. Also, like you say, the Jack actually changed nothing. I think I sometimes rush some decisions whilst at the table. Thanks for the in depth response though. Makes a lot of sense Hopefully it won't be long until I can run through that thought process whilst at the table.- Redzzz

This is 10nl, and at 10nl the minraise can be 1) top pair 2) middle pair 3) air 4) draw....a lot. My point is that after his minraise he doesn't have much money left - not enough even for a PSB on the turn - so just put him all-in on the flop if you feel that you're ahead of his range...and you are. A pair of jacks is fragile, and you can run into a lot of scare cards on the turn. That works both ways, too, like if he had QJ here and you paired the ace on the turn, he might wind up folding to a bet (probably not but...). And if you were seriously considering a fold without improving on the turn then you have to put him in on the flop. There's no point "re-evaluating" in a hand when you're against a shorstacking fish. You do that when you have an idea of how someone plays different boards and on different streets, like you feel he could raise a dry board with air but he wouldn't continue firing with it. Here, just say, "I probably have the best hand, raise."
