...If Cirque can sell tickets every night for decades in Vegas, why cant the NHL...

Most of the people who go to Cirque

1) Are out for a nice evening, dressed up to go out after a fancy dinner. Not exactly your hockey crowd. You going to dress up with the wife and watch hockey

2) Dont have Cirque shows where they came from. (I would guess more than 50%, if not 66%, of people visiting Vegas have reasonable access to the NHL)

3) Hockey or Sports is generally about rooting on your home team. Not sure visitors will really care about who wins or loses.

I dont want to imply that you are wrong, but these are the problems with hockey in Vegas. I would love to see, and I hope you are right, but just because its better than Florida, doesnt mean it will be a success to the NHL. I hope they do it though.

Interestingly, I do think they would get a decent number of walkups from groups of guys who are in LV from Europe Australia or other parts of US without hockey. Kind of a `hey guys, lets go see what this is like before we go out tonight, have a few beers``

Sometimes, its not about how many people follow you, but who wants to follow you. Its about the quality, not just the quantity.   You have a new follower request on Twitter: Men of Sapphir

I would guess most players aren't that involved. They likely give their agent a list of priorities and the agent tries to get the best contract possible.   The agent relays the info to the player an

See example is i (as well as you Im sure) have two different types of Vegas trips..

1 is with the wife..Typically at night we go out to a dinner and a show...The show can definetely be replaced with a hockey game..My wife not the biggest fan, will find it interesting to go watch..We have gone to other events like ECHL games together and she likes it.

Trip number 2 is with the boys...I think if a group of us go to Vegas, hell ya we are going to a game together....Throw in some beer specials, cross promotions with colleges, you will get the 21-35 crowd as well..

Just my opinion.

Oh add in the fact(in my case) going to a game in Vegas will be lot cheaper than seeing my team play at home...Added value..

Then you have people that live in Omaha Nebraska...They dont have hockey, it might be cool for them to catch something new ...

I dont know..I agree with most of you guys points, but I think it can really work..

Bottom line on Bettman though, he doesnt really care if it works in Vegas or not...He is getting is expansion fees...

One challenge for teams is selling the most expensive premium seats and I would think the casinos in Vegas would buy a lot of those to comp

I would also think the luxury suites would be an easier sell, for corporate people..Whales who love gambling and hockey...

Serge, agree with you about going with the boys or the guy from Omaha, but I disagree about the wife part, in my case. I think my wife, and rightly so, would say "couldnt we just do that back home, since we are in Vegas, we should do something we cant do back there". This is how I would feel too, if Las Vegas had a MLB team. I might go see it once, but that would be it.

Like you said, just opinions, who knows how it would do.

Dale, I would echo your thoughts about Chris and the info he provides, but I have to tell you I always appreciate your outside the box ideas. I dont always agree with them, but things like upper level casino at the game is a classic "hmm, thats an interesting idea from Dale, why didnt I think of that". Like I said, dont always agree, but appreciate the analysis behind it.

How many guys our age are going to book a Vegas trip around the Leafs game from Toronto..

I bet you if some operator was smart, they would charter a couple of planes and do some promotions...

Its a lock that I am going...

I think a huge key would also be where the arena is. If its in a casino, then no big deal, doesnt really kill your night.

If its outside the strip, in like suburbs or something, forget it, Im not getting in a cab to go to a game.

Maybe they should have all the games at like 6pm local time? Or even 3pm? Then youd kill local action.

Casino uses their database to target Toronto area people and offers them compled game tickets along with the other incentives they would normally offer.

New Las Vegas arena is right on the strip

I m thinking an arena would be in the UNLV area? probably putting it in Henderson or Red Rock isnt the best idea if you want tourists.

The frontage would be on the strip? That seems like a lot of valuable space to give up to an arena, but based on that link,

I wonder if it would actually be behind NYNY. I dont recall there being a lot of frontage between NYNY and MC, but I could be wrong.

Great location, at least for people like me who live at MGM.

I think you guys make all good points but I think LV is a different type of market and I think an NHL team just might work.

Part of it is there is a market for suites (Casinos and maybe even a poker pro or 2)

I can also see a group of people from a NHL city looking for an excuse to visit Vegas. Lets see our Flyers play and while we are there, maybe we will gamble a little

I am not as doom and gloom about as some but I certainly don't think it is a slam dunk either

I maybe didn't put this the right way before, when talking about the casinos: (reading back, I definitely didn't!)

Casinos are never going to promote an event that sends you OFF their property. Thats why the shows are all located in the casinos. And the casinos are partners in the shows. They write off the comps for the tickets.

For example, say you want to golf shadow creek golf course. That's owned by MGM. Now they KNOW that they have customers that will insist on golfing. So you can only book shadow creek through an MGM property VIP host. You MUST take their limo to shadow and that limo will be waiting to pick you up when you're done. That minimizes the time spent off property, and guarantees that you have to come back to the property.

So let's say then that MGM decides to partner or sponsor a team. That means on any given game night, they are going to be giving away 8,000 comps (Minimum) to fill the arena. They would also be sending players OFF property without any control of them coming back to THEIR casino to gamble. And you think Wynn or Venetian is going to send their players to an MGM sponsored venue with the same problems of sending players off site?

Bottom line is that this is something the casinos just aren't going to be very enthusiastic about being a part of.

Why does a casino have to send you off their property? Why can't the arena be a casino and the show be a hockey game? When the team's not playing something else is going on.

Locals hate going to the casinos if they don't have to, and whatever casino built an arena would lose the support of all the other casinos. They don't support events on other properties, and won't send their gamblers off property to another casino.

(This is a longer version of a twitter rant I just posted, so ignore it if you don't care)

"The younger generation in this country (perhaps resembling their grandparents rather than their parents) is less suburban minded than its elders, as it has become aware that the uncontrolled sprawl of our communities only aggravates their problems, and that the solution lies in re-shaping the city as a whole."

That quote is from 1956, but it might as well have been written today.

So the 20-somethings in the 50s wanted to go back to the city... but their children, those born around the late 50s, early 60s are those who yearned for suburban seclusion, and now, those of us born ~1980-1994ish, the "millennials" are prone to wanting to return to the city. That's quite interesting to me. Are we in a pattern here? Can we build cities well enough this time around so that my kids will want to stay, rather than flee to suburbs? Will be interesting to see, and certainly some interesting perspective on the matter.
