My brother rocks an old casio calculator watch. He wears it out when when he goes out to dinner. When the check arrives he insists on using his calculator watch to figure out the tip. (which he says should be 10%)Every time he does this it cracks me up. No one else thinks it's funny but I think it's a hilarious.

That is a nice looking watch. My wife wants to get me a watch for my bday coming up and I am not a big watch person. But I saw one of these last September when I was at the local jewelry store getting her anniversary present. 51Tc9WWmBFL._SS400_.jpg
I'm not a big fan of the "mesh" looking bands, but I like it on this one, very nice looking. I also like the sub dials, very cool.

That was one of the first watches I ever bought by myself, I saved my allowance when I was like 6 to buy one. I was the shizznit at school rockin' that thing in second grade I tell you what.

It just occurred to me that the reason guys like watches so much is because it's the closest they can get to wearing jewellery, at least in a socially acceptable way.Just buy yourself a damn bracelet. Watches are for telling the time, not for looking like a vain, obnoxious douchebag. If you want to show off your wealth or wear something pretty and sparkly, just be honest with yourself and wear real jewellery. FACT.
Function and style can go together. But I hate fancy watches as much as I hate fancy jewelry.

IWC makes some awesome watches, they are in the running for my next purchase, along with about 5 others! It's so hard to pick! I am lucky to have an AMAZING watch shop nearby that carries a lot of high end brands, they give me good deals :-)

<Raises hand>Owned two of then.BTW, how do you pronounce Patek? I asked different people and I have been told the east coast says Pat -eck' where the west coast says: Pat teek'Or visa versa

Pat-eck phil-eep is the proper pronunciation. The Panerai is the one I've heard people f up the most. Pan-air-EYE is the proper pronunciation, although most people in the states seems to pronounce it pan-AIR-eee.Also, it's pat-eck, said quicly, almost like padick, instead of paT-eck, where you would distinctly pronounce each syllable.

Watches aren't a big deal for me. For a few years, I just used my cell phone for the time. When I started dealing poker, I needed a watch, so I used a $5 Walmart watch. It told me the time and had a stopwatch and alarm. The band finally broke, so I bought a $30 Timex that I like. Hit it against a gate the first week, broke off the winder thingamajig, and had to buy another one.For any price more than that, I can think of something else that I would rather have.

There are a lot of people that don't care about watches, just like there are people that think poker is a waste of time and resources, or comic books, or guns, or whatever. The argument that a $20 dollar watch keeps time just as well as a $8000 one is missing the point. Saying, like you did, that you would rather spend your money on other things IS a valid argument. The whole point of owning or appreciating a high end watch is not in the price, it is the fact that, in most cases, the movments contains hundreds, sometimes over a thousand, of moving pieces, assembled and manufactured by hand, took a year or more to just design, and is an incredible feat of engineering. My Patek, for example, can tell the second, minute, hour, day of the week, month, year, and phase of the moon, taking into account leap years, never needing to be adjusted for the odd days of the month, all just using GEARS AND SPRINGS! It's freaking amazing. Oh yeah, it also has a miniature bell and stiker inside and can ring the hour, half-hour, and quarter-hour, all using a different number of chimes.

When you say it like that...it does sound pretty cool.

Watches are a funny thing. I own a small collection of very nice watches, links to each below. Some of them nobody has even taken a second look at, except for the Rolex, because nobody knows any other name than Rolex. Just buy what you like, no matter the price. I don't buy them to impress other people! The good thing about the high end watches, you can usually get close to your money back on them, and if they are rare (as in rare for America, i.e. the Graham or Panerai listed below), you can actually turn a profit on them. It's funny when I wear some of them, people say, "Oh, nice watch, do you have a Rolex?", like a Rolex is the greatest watch in the world. Rolex is a great, classic brand, but there are SO many quality watches out there now it is amazing.Rolex Submariner Date, 40mm steel and goldhttp://www.rolex.com/en#/rolex-watches/sub...m116613ln-0001/Officine Panerai Luminor Marina Automatic 44mmhttp://www.panerai.com/s_page.xpd?id_lingu...id_categoria=35Graham Swordfish Special Edition - Left Hand (yes, I wear my watches on my left hand), number 221 of 500.http://www.graham-london.com/collection/sw...kknight.en.htmlTag Heuer Grand Carrera Chronograph Calibre 17 RS 2 PVDhttp://www.gemnation.com/watches/Tag-Heuer...6016-15624.htmlTag Heuer Formula 1http://www.tagheuer.com/the-collection/tag...=CAH1110.BA0850Movado Fierohttp://www.movado.com/Details.aspx?Id=watc...5621&page=1Patek Phillippe Grand Complications (Gift from Grandfather when I graduated Marine Corps boot camp, he was a lifelong Marine and started a telecommunciation consulting company when he retired).http://www.patek.com//html/en/descriptionC..._5159G_001.htmlI also have a couple of Casio G-shocks, three nice Seikos (the flight calculator is my current daily watch right now), a Nautica watch that I love that was only $45. I have watches in the entire spectrum of prices, and I like them all. I am lucky to be able to afford the ones that I have, and if I did fall on hard times, I know I could get close to my money back on them, especially the Panerai, I've had two jewlers tell me they would buy it from me for about 5% more than I paid for it.So, I guess bottom line when it comes to watches, but what YOU like and don't buy something to impress other people. I have found that people (other than at a poker table or jewlery store) RARELY notice what you have on your wrist. I've had one person notice my Patek, and that was at the Bellagio in a tourney, and that watch is worth more than my house (of course, I've only worn in about 5 times, it's parked safe in the safe deposit box and the bank!). I compare a watch to sexy underwear for a woman, you wear it to make yourself feel good, not to impress people that have no idea.Peace
Great post. You have nice watches man. Sooo jealous, lol at me making a stupid post about a shitty 500 dollar watch. However, I bought it obv not to impress anyone cause it wouldn't but i really like it and that was your point. I first learned of the Patek when I was at a strip joint a few months ago. This stripper had on a Patek that some guy gave her (dunno why she was wearing it since it's a man's watch i think?) but she was telling me it was very expensive) It's funny cause i didn't know any better and didn't think it looked that great. However, when you tell me about all the gears and such and what it can do, it gives me a better appreciation of it. Also, holy shit at it costing more than your house? How much is a Patek?just looked it up. appears pateks are 20k to 200k from the one website i looked at.

Not sure how much my Grandfather paid for it as I recieved in in 1993 when I graduated boot camp. I know the new ones retail around $220,000.00. Like I said, I've worn it only about 5 times (Vegas twice, my Wedding, Marine Corps ball once, and my Aunt's wedding). The one really cool thing about a Patek is that they service them for life. I have heard of people with an 80 years old watch that they don't even make parts for now getting serviced, and Patek will MAKE the parts they need to repair it. I have found most TRUE watch people can appreciate any watch, no matter the price. Just like anywhere, you will find jerks who, just because they can afford a nice watch, will look down on people without them, douchebags. Like I said in my post, buy what you can afford and what you like, do it for yourself, and f^&k everyone else. I always laugh inside at guys who find ways to bring up there watches, usually at a poker game. Stretching their arm out so everyone can see there watch, and then talk about how much they paid for it, blah blah blah. So if your watch is $500 or $5000, just enjoy it. Peace.

I wasn't putting anybody down for their love of watches - to each his own. I was just giving my perspective. I like your point about the craftsmanship, and can definitely appreciate that. Just for fun, I decided to go to the website in the OP, price the Black Predator, and think what I'd do if I had that money as pure indulgence money. I'd probably save a few more hundred and get a digital SLR.

I wear my roli everyday...golf, snorkle, feed the cats, etc.It is very durable and have put a few small scratched on the band, but nothing major.Point is I bought it to wear it and not throw it in a safe to spin around in the dark on one of those winder gizmos.

I wear my roli quite often, and it, along with all my other watches, are at home in my winder in my closet. However, due to insurance issues, I keep the Patek in a safe deposit box on a winder. The difference in the premium on that watch and just keeping it at home versus keeping it in the bank was huge.

LOL, I NEVER wear a nice watch, or carry cash, credit cards, anything, when I used to visit the escorts. Just a piece of advice.

Sandwedge! how's it going man? you are one of the fcper's I've ever met. You and JC. How are things going? I still remember playing with you at the Gold Coast years ago during the WSOP and I went over the top of you with the nut flush draw, you called and thought I was a donk for pushing lol. I missed tho. too bad. That was good times. Ah SLR's. another topic for discussion. I bought the canon t1i last year, with a bag, a good flash, telephoto lens, i prob spend around a little over 2k for it all. So, it would be much more than 500 bucks for a slr.

Just take the cash needed for her, in a plain white envelope, and that's it. I've never had a bad experience, but the one time I wear my rolex is the one time I'll get jumped by her boyfriend hiding in the closet or something.Haven't seen a girl (escort anyway) in quite awhile.

Hey Dratj. Yep, I remember you at the Gold Coast (2006). You were the first, and one of only two, FCP'ers that I've randomly bumped into. I don't remember the hand though. I'm doing well and hope you are too.
