J.c. Alvarado Says Soccer > Poker

Recommended Posts

Yea, there is no fighting in stands during American professional and college sports. Or even High School sports. Sure, there is no mass destruction of American towns after a local win or loss in a sporting event. Yes, soccer is the only sport that breeds violence and destruction everywhere in the world except for the USA, where sports fans are courteous and never resort to violence or destruction.I don't think I need google to point out that soccer is not the only sport in the world that has violent fans. I live in Detroit, I can point out a shit load of violent and destructive incidents in Michigan and college sports. Wasn't that long ago East Lansing was almost burnt to the ground thanks to "fans" of MSU basketball. Or the times the city was destroyed after Piston Championships.I could go on and on but I think my point is clear. You already brought up LA, I could add Denver to the mix. There are 10-15 sports related riots each year in the US and none of them deal with soccer.
Lets hope Oakland doesn't win anything soon lol.

10-15 a year? There aren't even that many major championships in a year really. I'd say maybe 3-5, but nothing like a team's bus getting shot up - at least not what I've seen.Yeah, Detroit/Denver/LA suck. But with soccer it became commonplace for a while across the globe, and is still common. You say there's 10-15 a year across all sports in USA, I cited 3 in the last couple of months just from soccer's first 2 pages of google. IMO there's a difference between people getting into fights in the stands at the game and organized riots well after the game is over.

Ice Hockey is not a worldwide sport, if almost noone in more than half the worlds countries could name one ice hockey player then it isnt even close. And how is the Togo national teams bus being shot up by Angolan rebels an example of soccer violence? They were in the wrong place at the wrong time, it had absolutely nothing to do with football.

Love to know where you got your evidence for this claim...Anyway, the Togo bit, if you read the article (I'm assuming you didn't based on what you said), they were shot up just a few minutes upon entering, meaning it was premeditated. It was the bus being shot, not being in a crossfire, meaning it was an attack on that team, not a "wrong place wrong time".

I dont have evidence which is why I only said half the worlds countries, I imagine its more like 90% have absolutely zero interest in ice hockey. Theres only id say half a dozen countries which take it seriously?Ive been following the Togo incident since it happened, as I have the whole African Cup of Nations tournament and have read plenty on it. It had absolutely nothing to do with football. Were the attacks on the Sri Lankan cricket team in India by terrorists cricket violence? The Israeli team being attacked at the Munich Olympics must be an example of those Olympic holigans aswell then.Anywho, I dont post or contribute too much here so ill take the judgement of those that do and seem to suggestthat you are mostly to be ignored.

Its amazing. If you don't know anything about something and its a hugely popular sport, why waste hours arguing about it and just accept that its popular for a reason. If you followed and supported football for a a few years and then give out about it, then fair enough. Its just the same story with people who don't get it or have not experienced it giving it shit. I mean American football, it stops every few seconds, adverts all the time, timeouts, its not fluid. I've grown up my whole life playing and watching sports that are non stop with no timeouts, wtf is this American football shit. But I need to skim about 4 pages of the challenge thread every week because of the football talk so obviously I'm aware there's something appealing about it that I just haven't found. Not going to waste time being narrow minded and argue over something I know nothing about with people who obviously care for the sport. Hi Lurbz.Cliffnotes: Rugby imo

Lurbz, you decided to get a bit active and made a speculative pre-flop call with 68suited, got calls behind and the flop's come down A,J,K rainbow. You've missed. Regardless of your initial intent, you've got nothing. Stop firing at it. It's just going to make things more difficult and make you look stupider and stupider on later streets.(I've tried to equate this to poker, because from what I've seen of your posts, it seems to be the one thing you actually understand to some degree. Hope it helps)

This was a brilliantly executed analogy. Bravo.

You are actually pretty wrong. I am on your side of this argument but with this you are just wrong.

Here's the deal.Football ( American ), as are all ground acquisition sports, is a cryptic metaphor for thermal nuclear war.The sport is reality, the aggressive use of force writes the history. Defense is hitting back and attacking their main guys. Kickers are mostly overpaid gays until you need them. There are many ways to score, each yielding points based on levels of difficulty. Get ahead? You get a reward and a free shot at another point! Hey winner...wanna go for an extra point? Go for it..winner!Then when you beat the most players in America..you get to be the World Champion! Soccer on the other hand is a socialist wet dream. The ball is economical success being bantered around all willy nilly for 90 minutes. Only one break because if people think about it for too long they would quit. There are very few scores because it really doesn't work. Someone put pressure on an opponent? Oh they get a free kick. WHAT? Someone is trying to get ahead of the competition? OFFSIDES!And what happens when the 'fans' lose? They begin destroying things. And when they win? Again..more destruction.Deep down they know that only by tearing down this PC sport's home will they be freed from the prisons of their minds!

I think BG is somewhat offbase.Soccer, to me, is a more elastic form of opportunism. Formations are there, but loosely applied. There is give and take of terrain. Each unit (player) has a variety of skills (weaponry, if you will), but the overall goal is the same: Stick the ball up your opponents end zone/net.I consider soccer to be a more modern representation of warfare/commerce. Adaptable, fluid and eminently exploitative of the weaknesses of others.

PfftNext you'll try to equate badminton with global manufacturing policies, when clearly croquet fits that analogy with 20 times the clarity of focused expressionismTake your crazy somewhere else and try to sell it.We're all full up here!

Fair enough, I will concede on this point.I would guess my view on this is biased as I come from a corner of the world (the southern hemisphere) which has little participation or mainstream interest in Ice Hockey at all.In saying that tho, I went to an Admirals game last time I was visiting my Dad in Milwaukee and it was fantastic! Especially the fights haha. His wife was trying to get us to go to college hockey because 'theres no violence'. Err sorry no sale!
