I used to watch a lot of black exploitation films, because I wasn't sure if I admitted that I didn't like them I would be a racist.
It's only racist if you call them "black exploitation" instead of "blacksploitation".

Ordering and selections are pretty rough outside the top-10, which is also pretty Asia biased. Meh. I'm sure I'm forgetting like a million things, and am way behind on films likely to have a push for top-five.1. Oldboy2. Schnechdoche3. There Will Be Blood 4. Adaptation 5. Happiness 6. No Country for Old Men7. City of God8. The Royal Tenenbaums9. Amores perros10. Capturing The Friedmans11. Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter…Spring12. Pan’s Labyrinth13. The Twilight Samurai14. Battle Royale15. Roger Dodger16. Last Life in the Universe17. Let the Right Ones In18. Kill Bill I/II19. The Clone Returns Home20. Match Point
You must have been the person that recommended Old Boy which lead me to Lady Vengeance. Tonight I watched Twilight Samurai which is quite the love story. So yea, thanks.I've added a lot of movies I haven't seen to my Netflix queue due to this thread.

Big Fan was o k . there's a reason that it wasn't out for long or that wide or that no one really talked a lot about it though.
I just watched the trailer and it looks awful. It can't decide whether it is trying to be another dumb sports comedy a la Ferrell, or it's a touching indie flick about an ordinary guy whose only escape is being a sports fan. Instead, it went with being both, which is impossible. The lead actor and the guy who plays his best friend don't work as serious actors, but the plotline with the family drama etc is clearly not designed to be funny. I can safely say that I will never watch this movie, because I will do my darndest to avoid it.

Other than it starring Patton Oswalt, I never got the comedy vibe from it.Ebert called it "one of the more thought-provoking sports movies I've seen."But I don't know why I'm defending it since I haven't seen it.

Ebert is a great movie critic, but sometimes it gets it really wrong. Examples of thought-provoking sports movies: Sugar, Rudo y Cursi, A League of Their Own, Cool Runnings. Unless the thought you are provoking is "man, this movie sure sucks", in which case sure, go with Big Fan.That Oswalt guy is exactly where the comedy vibe comes from, even though he doesn't intend to do it. It's not a funny comedy vibe either. It's just bad acting because he can only do comedy. Like if you see this trailer, from 1:38 mins he is trying to be serious, he is yelling at this guy, and his face is just completely devoid of emotion. It's so unconvincing, if you turned the sound off you would have no idea that he was angry. That is bad acting. The only time he puts life into it is when he is making a joke, like ~20 seconds later when he makes some crack about his mum having too many sauce packets.

Here' s my list of most overrated movies of the decade: No Country For Old Men
Yeah, despite the anger against you here, I said the same thing a while back. I wanted to punch someone in the neck (2 times) for pimping it. The acting was good, the movie blew.Looking back it was a pretty weak decade for movies and the last few years have been really bad.I also agree with your assesment of Borat of Bruno.I did like Burn after Reading for so many memorable scenes.LOTR was great.

I have no idea what LG is talking about here, but did you see the rack on that chick answering the door? I'm seeing this movie.
She's a pretty hideous old hag, apparantly she runs a strip club, but being in this movie means she can call herself an 'actress'.SERAFINA.jpgPremiere%20First%20Independent%20Pictures%20Fan%20Arrivals%20J_MqKReqTDrl.jpgIf I wanted to see big boobs I would choose to just watch a porn, I'm sure it would be a lot less painful than watching this shitty movie.

Now, here is the question of the hour.. Do I bump avatar onto the list as a late entry. Cons: The movie is basically Dances with aliens. the plot is garbage, the acting is terrible, the dialog is laughable and it is probably racially offensive. Actually, being racially offensive isn't really a con for ME, as I just think it's funny, but it could be to some. Say, a not white person.Pros: This movie elevated me in a way very few movies do. I can probably count my fingers the movies this decade that made me feel the wonderment I felt watching this movie, and immediately afterward. And really, that's the feeling I really want to have from a movie. More than a movie making me think, making me laugh ( unless it's laugh really, really hard), making me cry or angry or something.. I want to feel wonder and astonishment.. I want that feeling of being blown away by the sheer genius of the movie. Usually it takes a movie like Synechdoche or No country for old men or something, something that makes me just be blown away with how brilliant the writing and directing is. But Avatar, on the sheer visual and conceptual strengh, made me feel like a kid, made me say "wow" over and over and over. I haven't felt this way about a movie, it terms of being THAT impresses with the visuals of the movie, since The Matrix ( which isn't as impressive visually as Avatar, but is a better written movie) Honestly, I'm strongly leaning toward adding this to my top 20, I was so blown away by it. Maybe in 15 years, when every big dumb action movie that comes out is done like avatar, it will seem childish and poor, but right now.. it just seems.. wonderful.

You obviously missed the point if you think that it is in any way trying to be a comedy. I'm not saying I think it'll be great for sure, but I do think that you totally missed the theme the trailer was going for. It got good reviews. It did well at Sundance. It's at 88% on rotten tomatoes. None of these things on their own are proof of anything, but take them all together and I think it's way premature to say that it looks terrible. Well, I guess you can say it "looks" terrible any time...but you know what I mean.

That wasn't yelling, per se...most real people don't go all Pacino In Scarface when they're angry. The sauce packet joke was followed by creepy sad laughter, not Oswalt's usual shtick. I'm not claiming he's a great actor, but I think you're grasping at straws here. Forget the whole comedy thing, and watch the trailers just thinking about his character as being a sad, lonely guy whose only outlet from his boring life and personality is following sports.

Cool Runnings provoked many important thoughts from me. For example:1. Jamaica has a bob-sleigh team?2. I love John Candy3. Black men are funny4. I love John Candy5. Bob-sleighing would be scary, and is clearly harder than it looks6. I love John Candy7. Goddamnit, they should have won8. Still loving John Candy

Don't get me wrong...I love that movie, and still shed a single tear every time they put that sled on their shoulders and Yule Brenner's (sp?) dad shows his Jamaica t-shirt.

I had a thought about Avatar reading Big D's summary above. Could it be that this movie is actually better because it had horrid acting, a bad plot, bad writing, etc? Think about it, we were not distracted by trying to follow a intricate story line, or captivated by deep characters, but instead we were entertained with really cool flashing lights and colors while some aliens jumped around a movie screen.

Yes, I think there is some truth to this, but not exactly for the reasons you describe. It is a myth first and foremost, and myths actually do their work better when they are more abstracted, more simplified, so that we can project more specific situations onto them. We're not supposed to be in reality on Pandora. I suspect that is why he went with an unknown actor for the lead. I think it's the same reason we love star wars despite it's b-grade acting - joseph campbell was being channeled through george lucas.

What do you have against Sugar? I wouldn't call it thought-provoking, and I assume that Ebert did based on the way you phrased your comment, but I really liked it. I also love baseball, but I thought they did a good job with a lot of different aspects of the film. Actually, maybe it was a bit thought-provoking, but not on any grand-scale sense of things. Just stuff about what Dominicans go through to reach a dream and all that.My friend liked Big Fan, but it was for the dark comedy. I haven't seen it yet.
