Bigd's Top 20 Movies Of The Decade

Recommended Posts

but had some of the hottest "i don't know what story to tell now so here's some lesbians" I've ever seen.still not really worth watching though.
Do you like other Lynch movies? I'm not the biggest fan, but I think he's got some great ideas about cinema. I never leave one of his movies wondering who wrote it, or how many days the AD was the primary director. David Lynch movies don't look like anything else. It's all Lynch, which is kind of how I feel about Spike Lee. I might not love the new movie, but before I see it, I can be pretty sure I'll see a guy on a dolly, in emotional distress, rolling his eyes around like he's having a stroke. I'll see some social commentary, probably about hip hop or video games, and women will be in the angel/whore continuum.

If I saw Inside Man without knowing it was Spike Lee, I wouldn't have thought it was Spike Lee (I did like the movie though).I think QT is the obvious current choice for movies being uniquely the vision of the writer/director.By the way, in doing some research for my list, I came across Leonardo DiCaprio's IMDB page. Check out his "in development" section:Aquaman The Guardians The Many Deaths of Barnaby James The Girl with the Red Riding Hood The NeverEnding Story Untitled Brian Koppelman and David Levien Project Untitled Twilight Zone Project Untitled Gucci Biopic Confession of Pain The Deep Blue Goodbye In Dark Woods Cat's Cradle Untitled Mel Gibson/Leonardo DiCaprio Brave New World Farragut North Cache Akira Kite Untitled Michael Mann Project Untitled Timothy Leary Project The Chaser Fleming Blink Nothing in the World The Wolf of Wall Street Untitled Miki Dora Project The Infiltrator So I guess his next 15 years or so are booked.

i do like other lynch movies.but i thought that MD was awful. then later i read that it was originally a 1 hour pilot for a new tv series that didn't get picked up, and lynch wanted to put it out anyways, so he tacked on some lesbians and an ending and released it as a feature. i think he did it as quick n dirty as possible to spite the studio that failed to pick up the pilot and to keep them from changing it somehow (or some similar motivation, i forget exactly). that made a lot of sense, because the movie started off well.edit: maybe not.

Think about Inside Man, the gorgeous cinematography, the jazz score, the love letter to New York, and of course the lecture about the dangers of video games. (No, there was no talking dog, and I missed it.)

...which, shockingly, doesn't disqualify it from being on somebody's list of the best films in the past 10 years.
ok, let me change my statement.the departed was overrated and shouldn't be in movie of the decade discussion, imo.

My list, in no particular order, and at last count, only 16 movies. Also, I'm surprised at the lack of AI and Minority Report love. (They're not my cup of tea, but still...)
I really enjoyned Minority Report, but not enough to put it in my top 20. AI I thought was better than most people did ( a great number of people hate this movie), but again, not quite top 20 level. I thought it was very interesting, particularly the way Spielburg pays tribute to kubrick.. but... my view of the movie can't help but be tainted with thoughts of " yeah.. but what would the kubrick version have been like". It's a movie I should revisit though,

If this actually happens and it is good I will be very happy.

So you don't think I'm snubbing them, I haven't seen spirited away, hurt locker, sideways, city of god, 25th hour, blood diamond, syriana
See Hurt Locker and Almost Famous please!
I really liked Seabiscuit.Movies I haven't seen yet: Syndecock New York, Almost Famous, There Will be Blood, Hurt Locker, Mulholland Drive, Traffic (been meaning to see this for awhile), etc.I've seen About a Boy if that counts lol.I liked 3 Kings... I don't think I could put it in any "best of" list though.
Wow, you need to see all those. I mean good lord, those might all be top 20 movies.
This is true.Which reminds me, bigd mentioned Cruel Intentions earlier. That's one of my guilty pleasures movies.
One of Brig's fav unfortunately, but so is Crash, which I tried to explain to her that it's basically a good movie for simpletons, she might've been offended. :club:
Did Slumdog Millionaire really not make any of your lists?
This too, I always forget about it, but when I saw it, I was like holy crap, that might be one of the best movies I've ever seen.

You'll notice that Almost Famous was not on my list of "please don't think I'm snubbing these movies, because I haven't seen them " list. The reason is because I have seen it, and I am snubbing it.

My mistake, I thought I saw you mention earlier that you hadn't seen it, must've been someone else.

Something winning or not winning an oscar is not a way to make an argument about a movie that's going to mean half a shit to me. I could go on for hours about the failings of the academy awards, but I won't because it's a boring topic I've whinged about enough in the past. I will say, however, the fact that borat won an oscar for screen writing is a pure joke, because everything that was great about that movie was unscripted, at least in any traditional sense. And maybe there is merit in recognizing a new way to write a film, where you make a plot with people who are utterly unware they are in a movie... but I think bruno did this better ( and I'm saying bruno did it better almost exclusively because of the climax scene). It may not be difficult to make an audience uncomfortable ( see the way people squeem at Jackass, or any of a number of horror movies) but rarly is there a point to the uncomfortableness, rarely does the fact and way (some) of the audience reacts to a movie tie into the themes of the movie. ( the only other movie where I think I've seen something like this was Natural Born Killers, which I could get into if you're interested). The point of Bruno is that people in american culture are still extremely homophobic/ grossed out by gays, uncomfortable with gayness. This point was funniest when illustrated on the screen, but it was taken another level in people's reactions in the audience ( and subsequent reactions on message board, casual conversation and what not) Borat didn't make the audience uncomfortable at all, at least in that sense, because everyone was happily in on the joke. Some people might be uncomfortable in general from that style of humor, but that's not what I mean. It was this crafted audience uncomfortablenss, and how it relates to the theme of the movie, which sets it apart from Borat, I think. As I said before, Borat could have just been scenes from the ali g show. There was nothing about the plot of borat that was funny, it was all the individual situations. All of the "plotty" scenes from borat that weren't him ****ing with people weren't funny ( for the most part). So I don't see why Borat was a movie, the same way Jackass-The Movie is really funny, but not really a movie, just a collection of Jackass TV show clips they are charging for ( But Jackass was a little more honest about this, and didn't try and dress it up in a dumb plot). The same is true of bruno, really, except for 2 things.. the movie audience homophobia factor as I've gone into in detail, and the climax, which is the funniest thing in either movie. Bruno was essentially setting up that scene, and it was really exquisite. I'm not sure if any of that made sense, I'm really tired and am about to go to bed. But... probably most important to me besides these sort of Meta-homophobia considerations, I just found bruno plain funnier.
In terms of making people uncomfortable or whatever, I think Borat might've done this to. Borat's face in fat man's crack?
Gov drop what you are doing and go see Avatar right now please.Did any of you like Sideways as much as I did? Most people disagree with me with this, but I loved it. It might be because I have a sense of attachment to the area it was filmed. I went to college near there and there is a casino right next to all the wineries and restaurants. Paul Giamatti's character just blew me away, such an awesome movie.Sick Boy I agree that Memento is a great movie and it is more well made and complex than Into the Wild. It is my list though and I liked Into the Wild better lol. Also, I couldn't leave Iron Man off that list... I still haven't seen Almost Famous though.
Sideways was good, it could easily make the top 20. The screenplay was excellent.Im pretty sure that if you see Almost Famous, Iron Man will be off the list. It is in fact, very very good.
I understand that I'm in the minority with this one, but I hated Juno.
I didn't HATE it, but I was disappointed with it. The whole thing just felt really fake and the performances weren't good at all. The character development was awqward and it just didnt work for me. But it was a good try though, decent screenplay and ok acting from Michael Cera.

This needs to change. These movies are all intensly amazing.
Vanilla Sky?
Meh.

In terms of making the audience feel uncomfortable, may suggestIn the Company of MenCapturing the FriedmansThe WrestlerSorrow and the PityTo generate real feelings of audience discomfort, it helps to see these in a movie theater, at least 1/3 full.
