One movie that I would recommend from that list that wasn't seen by a lot of people is #30 Downfall. Seriously really well made, and haunting movie. In subtitles though.
Most people I know have seen Downfall. I do live in Europe though, so maybe that is a factor.

You misspelled insipid.

I saw you talking about his greatness in another thread (possibly the peopleofwalmart thread?), but I didn't have the energy to figure out what he was all about. I now have started watching. The first one I watched was karaoke of Total Eclipses of the Heart (sic), and I'm now watching his confession about the trauma of his childhood friend dying. All I can say is that I neeeeed to see more, and thankfully he has an insane amount of videos. I would estimate the chances that he smokes a TON of bad weed all the time to be approximately 100%. I haven't delved into his other videos yet so I dunno if he addresses issues like drugs of alcohol.Edit: Holy shit his confessional just turned into a karaoke version of Everybody Hurts. When Rickytic comes in on the first line, horrifyingly off-key, "WHEN THE DAY IS LONG!" I lost it.Next edit: He seems to be rocking the "giant cloth poncho/robe" pretty often.

I'm pretty sure it wasn't shown in that many theaters over here. Other foreign films on there that are really good are Pan's Labyrinth and City of God, but most people have seen those by now.A foreign film on that list that I hated was Hidden. I get that it was supposed to be controversial and all that, but the whole movie we are waiting for something to happen, and the movie just abruptly stops. I hate movies that are more about proving a point instead of being entertaining.

I feel like the cheerful commercials for "Precious" are a bit too misleading.

People should at least have an idea that there's a chance they're going to be subjected to images such as that of a 16 year old being raped by her father.

I absolutely HATE the stupid Ford commercials that have that voice over guy walking around in a stupid truckers hat. Has anyone seen this? That guy has never worn a hat in his entire life, but somehow they think he should be, in order to sell cars?

Yeah, you know what I HATE? The annual stupid Old Navy commercials. Couldn't be gayer!

Before I go see any rated R movie I at least look at the description before I see it. Especially independent movies. I went to Yahoo movies, and this is enough information right here that you are probably going to see some shocking stuff: "R for child abuse including sexual assault, and pervasive language"With that said, I agree that some movie previews are pretty misleading. One movie that comes to mind is Observe and Report. Another one was Pan's Labyrinth... I thought it was going to be a straight up fantasy movie lol.

What's with all the "Jacks" on TV? Are writers really THAT lacking in names for lead/key characters?? I know I've written this before but even the new show, V, has another Jack!Just some examples off the top of my head. I know I'm missing some. Add your own Jack to the list.PASTJack Tripper, Threes Company121348__ritter_l.jpgJack McFarland, Will and Gracewill_jack.jpgJack Bristow, Aliasjackbristow.jpgRECENT/CURRENTJack Bauer, 24jack-bauer.jpgJack Donaghy, 30 Rockjack-donaghy-pic.jpgJack Shephard, Lost122853__jack_l.jpgNEWJack Landry, VFather-Jack-Landry-150x150.jpg

Ironically, I feel like this too could have very easily been incredibly misleading to anyone who hadn't seen the cast of this movie.

This isn't the hot kind of kiddie rape, like Bastards out of Carolina, it's the sick kind. like Sleepers.

Up in the AirInvictusThe Lovely BonesNineThe Imaginarium of Doctor Panassus
I've seen Up in the Air, The Lovely Bones, The Road, and will be seeing Nine tonight. Last night I saw A Single Man (starring Colin Firth, directed by Tom Ford) and it might be my movie of the year. It was great, in that way, when after it was over, I felt like my brain had been splashed with some cold water. Now I remember what a movie can be, when the story is simply and well executed and the visual style is gorgeous, and propels the story forward. It's not for everyone--the story is set in 1962, a man(George) learns his long time lover (Jim) has died in a car accident. The movie follows George for one day, lingers on his sorrow and grief, and watches as he tries to live his life as a college professor. I loved this movie. My picks for 2009UpUp in the AirHurt LockerA Single ManA Serious Man (I've only seen it once, and I have trouble articulating why I like it.)

Well, obviously you liked Up in the Air a lot, but any thoughts on the others?

The Lovely Bones was a complete miss for me. I'm a big fan of the book, but putting that aside, and just watching a movie--I didn't enjoy it. I'm enough of a movie fan for this to pain me. I had high hopes for Peter Jackson, and wanted to see a great small film done by the Heavenly Creatures team. (Although, Lovely Bones is not small. It's big, meandering, and probably too long.)The Road is good, very good. (I have not read the book.) The movie is pretty unsparing in its depiction of a subsistence type of life. If you lose your shoes, you're dead. If you trust the wrong person, you're dead. If you develop a cold, you're dead. In a weird way, I felt like it could be a companion piece for Where the Wild Things Are. Wild Things are a dream of an 8 year old boy, the Road could be seen as the absolute nightmare of the same 8 year old.I'm a little skeptical of Nine tonight. I like so many of the people involved, but feel that Kate Hudson has become the new Andy Garcia. She's the Kiss of Death, the Mark of Crap.

Are you a film reviewer or something? What do you do for a job that allows you access to all these movies before anyone else?

No. My husband is in the industry, and that's how I see most of them.
You're a lady? Color me surprised. No wonder you didn't come into the Sick thread. (We still want you, and we already have one girl.)
