lurbz 2
Golf has an all timemoney list, and I bet Jack Nicklaus is maybe 600th all time, but clearly he's one of the greatest everBracelets is a pretty good benchmark, isn't it?No.Field sizes are drastically different these days. drewlovesomaha 0
I am surprised Daniel hasn't weighed back in on this topic especially when I read someone's quote that it is harder to win a 1k buy NLHE tourney than a 10k or 50k event (NLHE or not) - while it obviously requires a little more luck to dodge the land mines and horrible players sucking out in 1000 plus player tourney, it requires a higher level of skill to win a tourney where there aren't any weak spots at the table from start to finish. Have you not been paying attention to the changes that have been made to the WSOP by the players comittee to have higher buy ins and more mixed games, etc. To say the buy in amount doesn't change the skill level is naive, especially in events with no satellites. The strength of the field directly relates to how prestigious an event becomes i.e - the Ultimate Bet/Aruba Challenge probably isn't in the same class as the WSOPE - hopefully you get the point. If not, i give you the words of Texas Dolly himself, when asked to compare online players to the high stakes gamblers in Bobby's Room, "If you want to see the best poker players in the world, they are at the Bellagio playing the highest stakes games in the world, and that will never change"

DanielNegreanu 141
Hieu Ma is Tony Ma, he was a monster and doesn't play the circuit much anymore. The buy in ABSOLUTELY has a major effect on the toughness of the field. Winning a $10,000 WSOPE event with 334 players, versus a $1500 NLH hold'em event at the WSOP is sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much harder! The fact is, the group of players even capable of winning the WSOPE event is so much smaller because the play is so much more sophisticated and the stacks are so much deeper. The small buy in WSOP events are short stacked tournaments. There is less room to make huge mistakes. As for Erick Lindgren, Elky, Yevgeny Timoshenko, or JC Tran, I'd happily bet my money on them in a tournament over PH. PH's success came before the poker boom, and since, so many young online players have excelled and become great players. Since the boom he won two small buy in NLH hold'em events, but has never, and I mean never done well in ANY NLH tournament with a tough starting field. He hasn't really even come close. Just look at his record in the last, say, 5 years in big buy in events. The game has changed a lot. The young kids know the math, and they don't just "give him all their chips" instead they nickel and dime him to death and exploit his weak fundamentals. Poker is harder now than it was, and if you don't improve your game you won't be able to compete with the young internet players. They are fundamentally sound. Not unbeatable by any stretch, but you have to raise your level of play to do so.
nutzbuster 7
T.J. Cloutier must've crushed back in the day to be that high on the list and not doing much since the poker boom.Comments on his play pre-03 Daniel? Like in baseball, you cant go 5 for 10 and win the batting title witha 500 avg.
