An Open Letter To Daniel

Recommended Posts

Hey Daniel, I am big fan and consider myself a winning player at 5-10 and 10 - 20 limit hold em and also limit omaha hi lo. I play 6 days a week and have a net profit over the last two years of slightly over 25,000. I also have very little desire to ever move up to higher limits since I have other interests outside poker. My motivation in writing this post is that I have several friends who play exclusively no limit cash games with varying degrees of success but all three have gone broke in the last 3 months. I know that you believe the truest measure of a poker player's skill is his/her ability to play all the games. I feel the same way and also agree with you that any winning limit hold em player has an advantage in becoming a more complete player than someone who learned poker by playing NLHE. So, my challenge/request to you is this : As one of poker's most successful stars and a true ambassador for the game, I would like to see you get involved in a TV project/show where all the games are played and maybe do some videos on the importance of learning all the games as well as how much less risk and loss the average player would face playing limit poker. I play in Michigan in the summer and Florida in the winter and would guess well less than 25 percent of the players I play with are winning players. As a poker player I am programmed to capitalize on other players weaknesses but as a person I have noticed a disturbing trend in my friends and opponents to run up credit card and other forms of debt. Since I primarily play limit I can only imagine the debts being run up by average and weaker NLHE players. While it may be par for the course for pros and talented amateurs to borrow or stake each other it seems to be a dangerous route for the average gambler which the popularity of NLHE on TV only increases. Best of luck to you, may God bless your mom and the rest of your family.

Yup, that would be a challenge to have a show highlighting games other than NL. It will be a challenge because nobody would watch and it would be cancelled after the first episode. If Daniel could make non-NL games popular on TV he would be godlike.

I agree that NLHE is dangerous to the non-rolled person who thinks they are good and thinks it's "cool". IMO this was probably a far bigger issue during the head of the boom than it is now though. (i.e. that ship has sailed)And the problem with marketing anything else is that NLHE is so easy to follow on a fundamental level. If/when the casual poker afficiando takes to PLO, then i promise that the PLO boom will compete with NLHE, just because the swings are even greater, making for more viewers (general viewing public gets a stiffy watching huge $$ swings...as long as they understand the game at all). That being said, if you try and televise anything to do with 8-game, etc. and it will just fail with supreme ease.

Wait so you play 10-20 6 days a week and your profit is 25k? so your win rate is 2 BB/day

Problem: people won't watch even limit hold'em....
Maybe if everyone were naked ...Maybe not. There aren't many poker players I'd want to see naked. Maybe the dealers could be attractive naked people.

More than a little sad how things deteriorate on a forum. I am happy with my results but no, I would not consider it bragging to say I won 25k in a 48 month period. The point of the post was that someone with Daniel's influence might be able to persuade the average person to have a more fulfilling poker experience and enrich their life as well as their bankroll. I consider myself a strong player but I have never wanted to let poker overtake my other interests in life so I just use it to subsidize my income and am very happy with my choice. I stand by my statement that 70 percent of poker players are losing players and maybe half that group have serious issues and concerns and probably shouldn't play poker especially NLHE Poker is a great game but I honestly think a serious case could be made that NLHE has had an effect on our economy - anyone who would like to debate this point I welcome your comments....................

It probably causes cancer, too.I think you're conflating no-limit structure with people playing over the heads in the interest of flamebait.

Definitely my bad...........should have expected the responses I got. Thanks for reassuring me I made the right choice to always play live rather than deal with the anonymous nature of the internet on a daily basis. I wish you all the best of luck and hope none of you are living in your parent's basement while playing 15 hours a day of online poker --oops I couldn't resist ---- P.S. What is the difference between online players and live players -- Live players get laid on a regular basis but online players have never even been to Hawaii.....................LOL

Unfortunatly, there has to be losing players or there wouldnt be any winning players. Myself, I do enjoy live games better just because online can be boring as hell. But I must say that I get laid just as much when I play online as when I play live games. So its really not a correct statement. Okay, Okay I couldnt help myself. I just had to throw my two cents in :club: Just so you know, that In my state the most we can play in a casino is spread limit and I have to say I have sat at many limit tables and seen people go bust. No different than NL, If you are sick, you are sick. Whether it is pulltabs, poker, or slot machines..
