All-in On The First Hand With Top Pair

So it's the first hand of my standard bread-and-butter $13 SnG on PS. I find a nice hand a get some action but play it small-ball figuring I'll take it easy on the first hand. Then he makes this move on the river... My gut instinct is that such a wild over-bet has to be a bluff. Better a little bigger on the turn, imo.22, 55, 67, and 78 are all likely hands for villain who was in the SB. Even a possible AK, but that depends on if he wouldn't reraise PF with it. You could also throw AJ and A10 into his range and maybe he thinks it's good.I fold this though. You could possibly have the best hand, but an overbet like this is usually the nuts.

My first response is fold - I don't think AQ is strong enough here, it is early and you don't need to risk your tournament life against someone who got lucky with AceRag (read 7) or with a suited connector like 78. Maybe bet a little more preflop with position and one limper, def bet more on the flop tho - at least 120.

easy fold...i bet a little more than half pot on flop but i don't hate your bet, and maybe around 2/3-3/4 pot on turn. river even if your good (which is unlikely) its not worth it to find out.

I'd fold here as well...Super early in the tournament and the SB has a much wider range than someone else who may have called your raise. Even if he is bluffing, not really worth risking your tournament life over. You bet too small on every street, raise it up pre-flop, post-flop, and specifically on the turn. Had you bet something like 150-250 on the turn and he called, you would know something is up. And wouldn't be in this position on the river.Going through possible hands... A 5, A 7, 22, 55, K7, 78s are all the hands I believe he could have.... Then again, it's the beginning of the tournament, and all of the bad players are still in...So for all you know he could have nothing..or pocket 10's.In any case, fold it..You could find a better spot.

Fold. I do this periodically to opponents. Especially if it's the 1st few hands of a tourney and I flop a monster , or make a river that beats the hand I define my opponent to (in your case AK-AT), I'll blast the river bet, and very often get called light because of how "fishy" it looks. It's very +EV and it's great advertisment to start the tourney, because it's so against the grain from my play type.

unless he is a trappy player with a medium A i think you have to fold river, what can u beat? def not A7, AK, 77, 55, AA and that is what is being represented.i know it is a hard spot. Bet bigger on turn because that rules out busted flushes with suited broadways that would bluff the river making the river play a little more clear cut

Did you fold bc i think the 7 would have made me fold to an unknown

As it happens, I thought for a long time and convinced myself it was a bluff. I called, and he was in fact firing with shit: he had K8 off. What a total madman. Taking that pot down, I went on to dominate the table with my double-stack and win the tourney, but thinking about it I decided the call was less heroic and more just risky to the point of stupid really. I think I agree with the general sentiment: in the long run, I have to be folding that hand.

not a horrible bluff the 7 was a great scare card to bet at but a madman size probably figure he could win the tounry by bluffing that hand big i guess idk maybe giving him way too much credit. that is why i like to not have any good hands in the first 2-3 orbits of sngs so i can see who is a potential maniac
