It only takes a second and is verrrrrry easy. Just click on link in OP and copy n paste any of the many written letters in that thread.Cross post this in other forums if you know about them.as i wrote elsewhere, I think people should not copy the post in that OP, it is horrendously written. it may do more harm than good. this one from later in the thread is acceptable but there are others. ---Start Letter---Dear President Obama,I would like to express my extreme discontent over the Justice Department's recent decision to freeze the funds of an estimated twenty-four thousand American online poker players. It is my understanding that the rules restricting transactions to and from online poker sites are to be governed by the UIGEA, which has not yet been enacted, and that nowhere within the letter of the law has online poker been declared an illegal activity. Sir, I voted for you because of your deference to fairness. Please extend this fairness to your consideration of online poker and encourage the cessation of heavy-handed measures that hastily restrict my liberties. Before further action is taken, please give online poker players a chance to prove that their game is primarily one of skill, not luck. Finally, Sir, please note that online poker was one of the top issues under "Technology" in the White House's recently developed Government Briefing Book. Online poker players comprise a large and rapidly growing constituency in America. We would very much appreciate your support. Sincerely,---End Letter---
hank213 1,824
Frankly, that letter is not well written. While I am sympathetic to airing one's discontent to elected officials, if I'm attaching my name to a letter to the President it would have to be put together by someone with a better grasp of prose than the author of that letter. --edit Dammit vb beat me to the punch. looshle 6
never mind the fact that this is completely fucking pointless. They know how many people play online poker. They know how many checks they are freezing and they probably know that you dont want them to freeze your money.

grocery_mony 9
Would be better to bombard media outlets? Stories of millions of dollars frozen and not being able to be spent in a bad economy could get some intrest.

grocery_mony 9
Yeah, because the media has always done a great job in spinning it in our favor. The thing is who outside of the poker community who really knows whats going on? When legitmately earned money is frozen I think everyone should know. Better shot of getting something done I would think.

That and the government isn't getting their cut.

grocery_mony 9
I watch the news alot. There is always a story of some person fighting the government, insurance company ect on some issue and they have been fighting them for months or even years and finnally get to their wits end and call the local tv news channel. They do a story and people get outraged and mirraciously it gets resolved within days. Do a story on Grandpa William who is a veteran of 2 wars and lives on a small pension. He cant get out of th house much due to disabilty and gets entertainment playing .10/.20 seven card stud online. One day Grandapa Williams uses his fpps to enter a freeroll and he wins 5k. He then promises his grandkids a trip to Disneyland with his big score but the money is seized by the US government(cut to shot of crying grandkids). Something like this has a better shot of really getting something done then overloading Obama's inbox with a form letter, something that probally happens on a daily basis with one issue or another. StrippersNBlow 0
Fuck giving them any attention on this issue at all. Just another aspiring politician(s) trying to get his name in the paper. The ones to worry about are the crooked lobbyists who get bills piggybacked in through port security bills. Not to mention there isn't one of these blowhards willing to take this to court and fight it out with a poker site.

bigbadbeat 0
as someone who has worked in the office of an elected official, i can tell you that letters do have an effect on the politician in question, if s/he has no real vested interest in either side of the debate. they will weigh the pro and cons of the matter and decide the merits of the issue as they see it. anybody who has tied themselves to the issue one way or the other will not change their actions at all in response to campaigns like this. The letters indicate the importance the electorate places on the issue, so the more sent the merrier. What can be effective is a campaign of political donations against the most vulnerable congresscritters who support the bill. a little research and a very very small amount of money donated to selected politicians who have a chance of defeating an incumbent could be very rewarding. It is very easy to just think ahhh nothin I do will matter anyway. But if you think that way then you have a self fullfilling prophecy. When some Immigration issue comes up the offices of Legislators get lit up and they take notice. A majority of Americans actually support a pathway to citzenship for illegals but a vocal minority usually wins out. (Please I don't want to start an immigration debate). But the point being that those people care very strongly and act on their feelings and often win. If we actually care enough then its up to us. My letters (emails) have been sent.Edit: I sent the letter on the PPA site not the poorly written one of 2-

First, it was the US Attorney from NY who initiated this action, and I strongly doubt that the white house or congress knew about it before it happened. This crackdown is not coming from the top, which means it has a chance of being affected from above if it doesn't fit with the administration's agenda. Raising awareness of what's going on can only help us, given the very weak legal position of the US Attorney and the obvious injustice of the action. The whole reason we have separate branches of government is so they can keep each other in check. If the judicial branch is off base here, it makes sense for us to alert the executive and legislative agencies which can respond. Second, the Obama administration has responded in the past to issues brought to attention through the internet, and in fact they have a web site set up for this express purpose. No, he doesn't personally read the emails, but staff members do and if there is a large volume of emails on a particular issue it becomes more likely to be noticed. But really it's such a small effort on our part, with a possibly very small chance to have a very large effect, with little to no risk. In the end the more complacent we are as a group the more likely we will lose our rights to play.<star-spangled banner>

The question about poker being a skill game is the crux of the argument that needs to be won on the LEGAL level....but on the support level, I think a lot more needs to be done to point out the bevy of economic ties that online poker carries. From the millions of dollars we are shipping overseas to play, rather than getting that money domestically. The many people who are either making a living or patching up holes in their financial lives with supplemental poker income, etc. etc. I think one hinges on the other, and together, rapid change could ensue.I know one person on here, I think balloonguy, does point out a very real issue about those players who don't properly file their taxes and the concern of a federal rake above and beyond what is current around. These are also very REAL points, which is why i think it's critical to promote the economic ties that bind here. Because even if poker is determined to be skill based on one fateful day, unless the powers that be are already weighed on by the masses who symapthize with the players that play for a living, the government can easily just "sin tax" this "newly legal sin based activity" with a 35% rake on top of 50% taxes for the non-professional player. Here's hoping the PPA and others "in the know" are battling BOTH of these fronts in a methodical way. hblask 1
I officially hate the "poker should be legal because it's a game of skill" argument, because it legitimizes the notion that the government has any business regulating other non-violent private behavior, such as gambling on slots. You don't get more freedom by throwing other people's freedom under the bus.
