owise1 0
name='hblask' date='Wednesday, April 1st, 2009, 10:10 AM' post='3072369'I never said that I think all employment decisions are fair or sensible, I just said that being a professional at all times is in your own long-term self-interest. Also, people who tend to forget this fact make terrible employees and will be fired many more times in their lives before they learn the lesson.First, I said imply.Second, a little story. My friend was working for a company that made websites when the internet was just starting up. The managment was terrible. He was a hard worker and brillant. Long story short, he got fired unjustly. After he got fired, he told the boss (lets call him Sam) he was a F***ing idiot in front of the other staff. Now he has his own company, has hired many of his old coworkers and is quite successful. Sam ran his old company to the ground and is now out of business. His has grown enourmously. More than one of his old coworkers have told him they respect him for telling the old boss he was a F***ing idiot and were happy to leave the tyrant Sam.Clearly it was not in his long term self interest to bite his tongue and be professional. What good will it do (or what purpose will it serve) some have asked, well off the top of my head: 1. It will make you feel better. If you are psychopath, yes. For most people, no. 1. Speaking of psycology, do you think it is better to keep all that anger and resentment inside? What do you think a psycologist would say?2. Well, I guess I might be a psycopath then, so you and all future employers should watch out, ha ha Do you think management will be posting the message -- Hey guys, look at this letter we got from that angry guy we had to fire because he had no professional skills!Reread the OP, he sent the message by email to his coworkers as well. 3. It might give the boss/management a wake up call and hopefully some changes could be made to improve the working conditions or solve the problem(s) at work.If they are as incompetent as claimed, not a chance. If they are competent, the letter is undeserved and will be treated as such, and in fact will be further justification for the firing. That's why is said, "might". It was a long shot, but I was being hopefull and like I said, it was off the top of my head.4. If you don't speak up, you might even feel worse.LOL, I think you are confusing solvable personal relationship issues with useless angry rants that have no hope of doing any good, and in fact has the potential for much harm to the author. If you speak up and feel better, then it has done some good. And thus, it would not be a, "useless angry rant". (By the way I loved the Dennis Miller rants, they were classic and did a lot of good)For example, one job I got fired from, on the way out I made sure to thank them for the time there and let them know that if they ever need me, they should call. They did. That's great, I am proud of you! But what if your situation is similar to that of the OP, and you don't ever want to work for that person/company again and you really don't need a reference from them. Then what? speedz99 145
So, to sum up, you got fired for not doing your job in the manner in which the store wanted you to do it and for disrespecting your supervisor for not doing her job in the manner in which you wanted her to do it. No and no, you dummy. It's funny when people are in denial even when all they have to do is look up a few inches on a computer screen and re-read what they just wrote. Read between the lines my ass...just read the lines themselves. They told you to approach customers. You didn't. They fired you. You didn't treat your boss with respect. They fired you.Now that's fine...I wouldn't bug people as soon as they walked through the door and I certainly wouldn't respect a boss like that. But I also wouldn't act like being fired from either position was some kind of travesty. Tragedy? Travesty. Anyways, my point (and I believe CindyLou's point) wasn't that nobody should ever speak up or that bosses are always right. We just wanted to respond to the title of this thread by saying that no, this was not the best bridge burning ever. It wasn't funny or original...it was just some prick getting back at his shitty boss by hurling middle school insults at her.
Mercury69 3
LOL, what I meant was confront them with whatever is on your chest when they give you the bad news since you are already talking to them in a formal meeting. Waiting till you get home and sending an e-mail like in the OP is the exact opposite of ballsy. I have been in this situation, laid off because of no seniority regardless of how worthless some of the people are they kept because they had been there since the Ice Age. It was someone else who mentioned it being ballsy so I just described how it wasn't now your jumping on my case. Now I remember why I don't venture to OT that often, Peace.Peace, dude. It was a timing thing...It's funny when people are in denial even when all they have to do is look up a few inches on a computer screen and re-read what they just wrote. Read between the lines my ass...just read the lines themselves. They told you to approach customers. You didn't. They fired you. You didn't treat your boss with respect. Try bringing something new and worthwhile to the discussion next time. You may go now.

Quietly working on a plan to start your own business and leaving on good terms. Score +10** Swearing at your boss for his idiocy while you still work there. Sal Paradise 57
If everyone hates it there so much they should suck up as much as possible and get their resumes out as quickly as possible. That way, they can get a good reference when they apologetically leave the best job they ever had. It's much more fun that way.what would you say to someone who hates his (or her!) job as much if not more than the op, has been sucking it up and sending out his (or her!) resumes for 2 years with no bites whatsoever, and has had his (or her!) job get progressively worse throughout those 2 years? Both of those are difficult choices, but the third choice, continue to put up with it for the rest of your life, is so bad I can barely think about it. Both choices require extreme sacrifice and patience.

Mercury69 3
My responses are critiques of your posts, and should be treated as such.Critics are, generally speaking, over-opinionated know-it-alls who don't know when to stfu and overanalyze things, often creating a misconception that they have a grasp of the subject at hand. I guess that'd be you. Besides, being critical doesn't make you knowledgeable about a subject or even halfway intelligent, for that matter. Face it, Speedz, you're no Bertrand Russell or Northrop Frye.

irishguy 14
Usually the smart move when you've been let go is to do nothing and move on it's not about not having "balls" it's about being an adult. But, I agree that writing a letter or voicing your displeasure with the situation can be therapeutic however the moment you start hurling profanities and being crass is the moment that you jump from airing your displeasure to being immature and unprofessional. While you may not have any use for this person as a reference others who she may be associated with, or even past coworkers will remember the level of unprofessionalism if your resume ever crosses their desks in the future. You could've taken the time to craft something intelligent and articulate and made much more of an impact on her and your former coworkers instead you likely left her feeling reassured as to why she let you go and left your former peers feeling embarrassed for you.I left a job after eight years do to months of arguments with my direct supervisor and his two bosses. The day I left I sent them a detailed email about how their inability to handle a dispute between me and my boss was backing me in to a corner. I met with my management team and the two "big wigs" to go over my email. The told me they couldn't budge and I told them I was leaving and filing legal action. My team left with me and before I could leave my office that day both showed up said they understood my stance and both gave me letters of reference and have continued to act as references even after the legal battle.
