Online Starter Help

Recommended Posts

I have been playing poker for about 10 years and i'd like to try the online thing. The problem is my concern over all the 'risks'. I have heard of deposit problems, not being able to withdraw $, losing your deposit entirely, software used to cheat games, freeze ups etc. Because i'm a newbie it does concern me. Could anyone help with the current state of online poker and any recommended sites? I like playing $1/2 NL hold'em. I hear about so many avid online players that I know there must be good sites...I just want to start off on the right foot. Any help much appreciated.

First thing I would say is start with one of the big 2. Full Tilt and Pokerstars.Neither has had any bad press as far as security and both seem to try their hardest to make sure everything stays on the up and up.Withdrawls and deposits will be fine on those sites for sure. Echecks works good to deposit, paper check is good to withdrawl. Most of the other things aren't really an issue. Secondly, and since It's what everyone is expecting me to say....RAKEBACK! (A must BEFORE you make the account)If you check the site in my signature it explains what it is exactly, but it's pretty huge to have when you play online. Free money basically. You can't get it on Pokerstars right now, but you can at Full Tilt and other sites, but I'd stick with Full Tilt till you're comfortable. Check the site though, read the FAQ if you're not familiar with it, and PM me if you have other questions.

1. Suited up's site is legit and you have to get rakeback if you're playing on a site that offers it. 2. Online plays much bigger than live. I don't know the equivalent. I'd guess 1/2 NL live is around .10/.25 online. 3. You'll hate it and be completely flummoxed at the nut hunting nature of online NL. 4. Full Tilt poker if you want higher rake but get rake back.5. PokerStars doesn't offer rakeback but has a smaller rake. 6. Don't play at any other site unless you're not in the US and have other sites available to you. 7. Make one deposit and play within that bankroll. It's not super easy to move money around online so not having to deposit when you want to play is key. 8. Here's a test to see if you should play online poker. Do you call or fold?Vs a 20/12/2 who 3bets 4% of the timeEarlier in the session he's seen me overbet bluff in a blind vs blind situtation. I'm not sure he if took note of it, but he was dealt in that hand.No-Limit Hold'em, $2.00 BB (4 handed) - Hold'em Manager Converter Tool from FlopTurnRiver.comsaw flopButton ($198.60)Hero (SB) ($427.65)BB ($400)UTG ($206.75)Preflop: Hero is SB with A :4h, 5 :5c2 folds, Hero bets $7, BB calls $6Flop: ($16) J :3h, 5 :club:, 5 :qh(2 players)Hero bets $10, BB calls $10Turn: ($36) 2 :D(2 players)Hero bets $26, BB calls $26River: ($88) 3 :ts(2 players)Hero bets $122, BB raises $356 (All-In)Edit: its 234 to call into 566

Thanks so much for the feedback. Yeah, i'm really new to this. So new that i've heard the term rakeback, but not totally sure how it works. Wish there was an online poker for dummies or something :club:. Anyway, thanks again for the help. I'll start small, keep within my bank and eventually i'll get these terms down. Appreciate it.

also remember that you are playing twice as many hands an hour as you are playing Live. Sometimes even more than that (depending on how slow your home game may be). So expect more "rare" situations to happen more often.

Plus, it's not really about how many posts. It's just that quite often people without many posts, make really stupid threads. That's the issue, not the actual post count.

Yeah, as far as first posts go, pikehunter was miles ahead of most people. He made a thread asking a direct (and relevant) question about setting up an online poker account... he definitely earned the right to get a direct and honest answer....We'll start flaming him when he reaches post number 12... :ts:club::4h

I heard we start flaming people super hard after they've made 22,904 posts. :club:

software used to cheat gamesThere is plenty of software out there that can help you. Its up for much debate whether its technically cheating or not. (Think about sitting at a live game with a player you have never heard of and having a complete insight into his or her betting patterns without seeing a single hand).

That's it! If I start a casino in Vegas with Octopus dealers I could make a killing. They'd probably be happy with minimum wage too.

Maybe even pay them in small fish and/or plankton.
