I do want to move down there eventually, but I'm stuck here in Canada for at least another year and a half, probably longer as my gf is lined up for a nice job after she's done school... eventually though, I need to get somewhere warm.In the meantime, with real estate prices so good, an investment property is definitely something I want to look into. A buddy of mine, and I each want to get into it at some point, and talked about Phoenix. I don't know anything about laws regarding owning foreign property, and I also know that there's a next to nothing chance that I qualify for a mortgage myself (no verifiable income), and he's currently between jobs (lol), but in the mid-future, we definitely will be looking into some sort of investment property. If things fall the right way, it could be 6-months, if they don't, it could be 3 years.I'm glad I know people out there, though, especially someone with experience in exactly what I want to do. :club:
WEEEEEEEEEEEEE at getting out of the cold. I just waited till my gf got a job and I was out. Currently living in California, although I think I just got sold on Arizona. Have a friend that lives in Scottsdale and I've heard nothing but good things.

I really want to move to the Phoenix area. I'm so sick of these ****ing winters up here.I need a visa though. Any chance the US needs more self (un) employed people who give nothing back to society?
If you're stuck in Canada, I urge you to consider moving to Vancouver. We really don't get winter out here, and the poker scene is *excellent*

Love Arizona - Shadow Mountain High, law school at U of A. For the money OP said they wanted to spend they are going to get a mansion if they live outside the city. If you get a job in the legal profession you are going to want to be close to either freeway, light rail or rapid bus system. I couldn't imagine fighting the Chandler traffic to downtown every day.I'd also rethink the pool thing. Unless you have kids you don't use it nearly as often as you think you will. Plus, keeping it running is a huge pain in the ass and the pump just sucks up electricity.

This. I'm sort of the opposite of centrally located, though, so my place is no good. Plus, all my wifes porn is disturbing to strangers. FWIW, I love Phoenix because of it's proximity to everywhere else I love. California, Vegas, Mexico, right next door. EDIT: I meant to quote the guy above me. I'm retarded.

If history is any indicator, investing in Phx real estate is truly gambling.

Move to Iowa.Summers can get to the triple digits and humid so it feels much hotter and you're uncomfortable.Winters are frigid cold, as we've had a -30 with windchill day this winter and it's in the single digits atm.Falls are pretty nice though. For like a month.

I'm in the process of moving to Arizona (I have to get my business sold before making the move permanent) but my gf is staying with family in Tucson. I am already in love with the weather here, but could some of you locals give me the pros and cons of Phoenix vs Tucson. Best poker rooms around? Thanks :club:

Tucson: Concentrate on looking at or near the the mountain area (Catalina Foothills and Oro valley), They are also where the main resorts are located (La Paloma, El Conquistador, Ventana Canyon) but a good portion of "the old pueblo" is pretty run down, dumpish imo. There are nice pockets scattered about like anywhere, but typically the closer you can get to the mountain, the better. There aren;t as many amenities there as in Phoenix and I have heard that the cost of living there is higher than Phoenix (Utilitiy rates, taxes, etc). It's raw and beautiful, but Phoenix/Scottsdale/Tempe-Chandler have much more to offer.

We have found a lot of 3/2 or 3/3 or even 4/3 houses in Scottsdale, Ahwatukee, Old Phoenix (central Phoenix? it is confusing), and Deer Valley for under 400K. Maybe we can spend less than we thought we would have to on a quality house. Hooray bad housing market.now, I just need to find a job....

Good luck buddy. I moved there in 2004 and stayed through 2006. Lived outside of downtown, then in North Scottsdale by the TPC. Great golf, lots of bars and people and restaurants, but the positives are easily outweighed by the fact that Phoenix is literally Hell on Earth six months out of the calendar twelve. I'm talking so hot you can't think if you're outside for more than 10 minutes.Moved to San Diego in 2006 and haven't looked back. Just needed to throw a dissenting opinion in there.
