Maybe this is a good thing. Vegas was getting too expensive, and the trend for the casinos was to milk the tourist of all their money in the restaurants and rooms before they even got to the casino. Maybe now they will realize that when people go to Vegas they have x amount of money to spend, and spending it on the room and food just makes Vegas less Vegas and more every other destination.I would like to see them go back to the days of $40 rooms and $5 buffets and let me lose the grand playing Keno instead of only losing $400 playing Keno because the rest went to the hotel.Read this one twice and it's exactly like a double post

SO damn true. I have this conversation all the time with friends...I mean, when did Vegas become NYC? The Room prices were getting completely out of control.

City center: Big white elephant?Thoughts
Oh for sure. I read somewhere that between July and October they sold only 36 Condos and they have 4000 of them to sell. Its probaly gonna bust MGM/Mirage which was a solid company before City Centre.

thinking about a trip in march. Has anyone heard of any steals on hotels? I am not a high roller so no comps for me. thanks
I got a coupon from the wynn for 3 free nights (one of them a friday iirc) in late march. I came to the same conclusion as the OP because I haven't so much as set foot in the wynn (it wasn't even built the last time I was in vegas). If they're sending guys like me comped rooms they must be hurtin. And no you can't buy my coupon.

Tell me about it. When I first heard about that thing, I knew they'd be in some serious s#it soon enough. Anyone could have seen that no way can tourism (or the city's future natural resources) handle that kind of additional volume. At some point I think they just got too far in to go back.Anyway, recession ain't just hitting Vegas...it hit the ad agency I work for when we got dumped by MC in November. So Ozi--get ready for your Fiji water to hit $10/bottle (if it hasn't already)...

They may have only sold 36 condos recently but I can tell you that most of the Veer Towers are already sold, and have been for quite some time. I'm one of the architects that was working on that project and it was pretty exciting, especially when I got to go out and actually visit the site (Our office is based in Detroit, MI). What we should really be talking about is how MGM/Mirage's stock has completely tanked over the last year and they've stopped funding for many other projects they had my firm ready to work on. Which leads me to my hidden sympathy post: since our firm lost so much work, there's not enough to keep everyone busy and I (among many others) got laid off the Thursday before Christmas. Yay for me. hopefully things will pick up in 2009 P

tough times buddy. Layoffs are happening everywhere when just 6 months ago there was a worker shortage. Hopefully you get back to work in 09 designing bridges and stuff for Obama's infrastructure stimulus.
