How Do You Manage Your Tilt?

Recommended Posts

Recently i've been having some issues while playing online where i'll get pissed about something, usually unrelated to poker, while in a tourney and then end up busting out shortly after. At least for me, living with my girlfriend, concentration is tough at times but when i can devote attention i cash regularly. Can anyone share what gets them back into the right state of mind while playing, specifically during a MTT where taking a break isn't really an option. Any tips would be appreciated as this is probably the biggest leak in my game thus far.ALSO a side topic: Anyone with poker and relationships, how do you make it work in terms of time devoted to each?? Poker seems to be such a time commitment that it can really take a toll in my case.

Best... Response... Ever...Seriously, it can be tough. For some reason, I almost never tilt when I'm playing live (which is where I play 90% of my poker since I live 45 mins from Foxwoods) but I really tilt online. I'm on my third LCD monitor right now because of it, I think because I feel I get really bad beat alot online (I know people will say this is just BS, or because you play so many more hands, but I will say coming from a mainly live player that I never see as many 9-1 dogs win as I do on friggin FTP. PS seems much better). When playing live I just kind of take a deep breath and calm down quicker, unless it was a sick 1 or 2 outter on the river for HE or 7th in stud, in which case I may take a full orbit away from the game just to relax and remind myself that I got money in as a profitable play and will make money in the long run doing that. If it keeps happening I just leave for the night and chalk it up to a bad run of cards. As for relationships, man, poker has cost my 3 gf's in the last year alone so I'm not one to best help with that.

^^^I also juggle poker and my girlfriend, but poker always takes a backseat to her (sometimes she comes in to rant and complain while I'm playing, and I nod 'uh huh' - and sometimes I'm masturbating to porn, which is hard to explain). It's a game and shouldn't supersede your relationships. The problem is that it's a consuming and addictive hobby. You really need the proper perspective for it. I've had three students in the past year (I teach college) confess to failing out of school because they spent too much time donking at $50 NL.

This one is sooooo underrated. There can be so much money to gain when going deep in a tourney but when you play for fun...play for fun. Don't use poker as an outlet for real life frustations because, even at smaller stakes, it will cost you to much money to keep a positive look at the game and chanses are you can get in a downward spiral.Jan

Thanks for the response...the whole putting it into perspective thing really is what it's all about. Currently finishing college is top priority, which always trumps poker. But it is still frustrating when i grind some small stakes up and then end up blowing it all in a matter of hours. I am recreational so i should approach it that way.

On tilt == stop playing for a significant period of time unless it's your livelihood

Personally, I tend to find this item very hard because I'm such a competitive person. It's all well and good to put it into persepective, but I still want with my whole heart and soul to win every time I play. Losing tends to tilt me regardless of whether it's because of bad play or bad beats.

This kind of comment pretty much automatically means that I give nothing you say any respect. Frankly though, it's easier to go on tilt online because you're playing more hands and you're playing them much faster. Furthermore, if you're multi-tabling, it's easy to take several beats in a very short period of time. When you're playing live it's much easier to slow yourself down and put things in perspective.
Do the stress balls really work?
I've never found them to work all that well. Honestly, I've never found a very cure for tilt. I will say, that if you feel yourself moving into a bad frame of mind, it's probably a good idea to quit at the point. I think frame of mind is very important.

I manage tilt by blowing through 2 extra buy-ins by calling too often in tough yet obvious situations where I'm beat. It takes me about 2 buy-ins to play like this. So, identify what exactly causes your tilt (certain amount, big beat... whatever) and notice HOW you tilt. Get up in the middle of session if you must.

He blows through 2 buy-ins to manage tilt, then goes on to offer advice? Don't listen to a word this person says... ever.

I played some sports and am intensely competitive and have often been able to turn things around by taking it to "another level." Whatever that means. When it comes to poker, I have had to understand that playing harder is not going to turn around the game, we turn losing around only by playing better. Frustration is the enemy of winning poker.
