It's fun to look up that race and see how they all turned out.

I finally started reading Moneyball yesterday. I'm about halfway through and so far it's great. I'm really happy I'm finally reading it.   It's fun to insta lookup all the players they talk about

Done and done. Man, that was epic.

Just finished "The Garden of Eden," by Hemingway. It was of course very, very good. The story of a a newly married couple who both fall in love with the same woman while honeymooning in Spain. Just started "Outer Dark," by Cormac McCarthy. Only two chapters in, but its obviously a masterpiece. His style is so unique. Hard to read though.

Sounds pretty interesting (I wiki'd it). Is it good?
So far it's above average. It utilizes quite a bit of flashback going from what the government scientists are doing after the outbreak back to the main character's development of the plague and eventual release. I'm still in the first few chapters of the book.

I was a fan of the Dune series for the most part; I wonder if Frank is turning in his grave over how bad the sequels and prequels written by his son are.
Yes they were awful. And yes I read almost all of them. I kept praying it would turn around but noooooooooo ran that stroryline straight into the ground.

Okay, just got finished reading Anathem or should I say a mixture of listening and the audio book and all I can say is WOW. Great book!http://www.nealstephenson.com/anathem/It has a little of everything in it philosophical, spiritual, comedy, death etc..It would be very hard to explain but some forwarning if you venture into it, the setting takes placeon another world very similar to ours with most of the same language but there is a ton of words, namesand places that it is very helpful to have the book vs. the audio to consantly refer to. It is 890 pages and you will frequently find yourself using it. It's really cool though and I can't imangine anyone reading or listening to it that couldn't help themselves from intricating it into their own daily language.Speely-TV or video screenSpeelycaptor- vid cameraJeeJah-cell phoneI drive my wife nuts saying things like, "you're jeejah's ringing" or "what's on the speely tonight?"This book is/seems pretty complicated at times, is very deep and probes alot of mathematics/realism vs religous/spiritualphilosophies. It has alot of math/geometry/quantam physics theories for the math geeks and if you aren't at least somewhat interested in that, it would likely be a deterent, but it isn't necessary. It has alot of humor, the charachters are great especially the main one, Erasmus. It is an endeavor to read, but well worth it IMHO.

My dad buys them and thinks they are decent, but to me they read like crappy adaptations of notes Frank probably left behind; a lot of the chapters read like summaries, just providing information about whatever is going on to the reader.

That's exactly what they are. The first prequel they put out said the new series was based on notes by Frank. I just don't think it was executed well. I mean, I knew at the end of the Jihad what was coming they just made me wait for a brazillion books in between for it to finally happen. I think the fact that I could skip a few books in the series and still not struggle at all with the story line in the final two is evidence that these were pretty much a money grab and not done to honor any vision or legacy of Frank's.

Just started in Plato , Socrates life and death. I can probably tell you more about it as i read along , at the moment they're discussing Eros , god of love , and it always amazes me how intelligent alot of these Athens were , especially for their time , not just Plato and Socrates but most of the people joining in these philosophical discussions ( symposia ) like Agathon and Faidros. Anyway so far it has kept me reading :club:.

Anyone here read anything by Italo Calvino? I read one of his books last summer and it was just amazing. One of my favourite books ever. It's called "If on a Winter's Night a Traveler" and it breaks all the rules of a novel. I highly recommend it to everyone here with taste... so BigD, Dutch etc, give it a try and tell me what you think. Incidentally, that book is another successful example of me judging a book by it's cover. I often buy books this way - if the cover grabs me I will read the blurb and a little of the first page and make my decision.

I was looking for The Winter of Our Discontent for a project when I was a junior when I stumbled on Calvino's novel. The book was so convoluted and told in such an odd way, I'm not sure if I appreciated it as much as I should have, I probably should reread it.

That's what I meant when I said it breaks all the rules of a novel. It took me a few chapters to get to grips with it, but once I understood I was completely enraptured. I couldn't put it down... of course it helped that I was spending hours on overnight trains and queueing for hours to get into places like the Uffizi Gallery in Florence.

I've never been a sci/fi guy really, but I have always heard great things about those books and I probably should read them some day.
You won't regret it. IMO, Ender's Game is the best work of fiction I've ever read. And, I've read a ton of books.

Dude, we had the cutest kitten I've ever seen come in to get spayed today. She was an incredibly sweet (lots of kneading and purrs) blue burmese that looked exactly like this:

I just read a book called, The Gargoyle.I really enjoyed it and would recomend it with some flyers attached. I thought it was perhaps one of the best written booksi've come across. His use of similes and metaphors were so spot on it was amazing. I hate when writers gtry to get all creativecoming up with a great simile but it takes you a minute to figure out what he was saying and why it was relevant. Most are just awful. These added a great flow and gave insight into the feeling the writer was trying to express. The book (fiction) has alot of different elements making it hard to explain but basically a tradgic love story with many interesting parts.Meh, here's a review.http://www.iht.com/articles/2008/08/05/arts/bookmar.php
