myenemy 0
Just ran out for a late lunch and picked up, the first three books of A Song of Ice and Fire at the used book store next to me here.Excellent move though. Those books were great and I dont even particularly read fantasy. Also, have yourself a gander at what George Martin looks like in real life for a chuckle. The only problem with this series is that he has been promising the fourth installment for like 5 years now or something.
myenemy 0
Thanks, now I can skip all your posts (in this thread).Really!?!? I guess I'll have to give it another try after I finish what Im reading now. Maybe I just wasnt in the mood for it. And BTW, I am also rereading Fahrenheit 451, as my sh*tbreak book at work. I found it in an old desk drawer. Its nice cause it fits in my pocket!

Also, have yourself a gander at what George Martin looks like in real life for a chuckle. The only problem with this series is that he has been promising the fourth installment for like 5 years now or something. The 4th book, A Feast for Crows, was released a few years back. I believe you are talking about the 5th book, A Dance with Dragons, which was originally slotted to be the 4th book in the series. He originally planned for there to be a time period between A Storm of Swords and A Dance with Dragons for the children to grow up off screen, but then when he went to write it there was far too many scenes where the characters were remembering things that happened to them in the past. So, then the 4th book came to be, which is pretty much a half of a book (not all the character povs are included). As for when the 5th book will come out, who the f knows. The Amazon release dates are useless, but I'd guess/hope sometime next summer.

LadyGrey 6
Has anyone here read The Gulag Archipelago? The subject matter sounds very interesting, but I'd like to get an idea of what it's like and whether it is worth reading.

Randy Reed 0
Starting a new audio book which is (holy crap) 28 hours called Anathem. It is very possibly ten times more confusing than the Malazan series ever hoped. It had great reviews so I'll give it a few discs but ugh, I'm not sure.It takes place in a different world, with a different language though he uses English most words don't mean what we think they mean. It's like reading a cryptogram. That sound awful. Good luck.It is good enough to keep you interested now that i'm 8 hours in but I did pick up a copy of the book so that I could read the glossary which helps tremendously. It's by Neal Stephenson who apparently has some other popular books just as weird. This book was so boring, I quit half way through.Just finishing up Pillars of the Earth, I loved it, and starting World Without End right away. Both Ken Follet novels.I actually got World Without End on audiobook at the library and the librarian asked me if I had read the first one which I didn't even know existed. I had a short book written by him that was okay and was selecting a book just by author. I've been curious about them so I'll definately put them on the list for this year.Aside from the monster Anathem, I am reading Edgar Sawtelle (Oprah selection not that I give a rats ass) which i've heard is very good. It's also a monster sized book and with a few others laying around I'm good for the next month at least.
Randy Reed 0
Has anyone here read The Gulag Archipelago? The subject matter sounds very interesting, but I'd like to get an idea of what it's like and whether it is worth reading. When I was a teen in the late seventies it was a very popular book and given the fear about communism and the soviet union still pretty rampantit was a shocking look at their society. It was pretty difficult for me to read at the time and I confess that I don't remember alot of it. It was a pretty brutal look at their concentration system, layed alot of blame on stalin and lenin since they depended on the "gulag" system to support the government. It follows some prisoners through the prison "gulag" system which was brutal as well. At the time I'm pretty sure it was the first real "inside" look at the horrors of Russia as well. I'm not sure how it would read today but i'm sure it would be akin to a Brittany Spears autobiography.
Theraflu 1,035
I'm reading The Arctic Event right now, which is co-written? or something by Ludlum and some other guy. It's decent about 150 pages in, and I don't know anything about the Crisis One series or whatever the hell it's called, but it's something entertaining to read.

Putting Ivan Denisovich on the old Amazon wishlist. I'm expecting lots of books for my 21st birthday because it's the only thing I can think of that I really want. Well, the only thing I can think of that my family can afford to give me. We're poor now~*~*~
checkymcfold 0
the ladyfriend says that mr. s. is an ok read if you're interested in 'western approved' soviet dissident writers (much like the endearing ayn rand); however, if you're interested in soviet writers that wrote commentaries on society while still working within the system, try vassily grossman or mikhail sholokhov instead. Randy Reed 0
Okay, I got all caught up in Edgar Sawtelle. 562 pages and i've been reading like a fiend. It was well written like a guy who just finished his master's in writing and tries to outdo and make perfect every description in the book. And yes, that was true. It was an interesting read and lots of promise that just seems to never get anywhere. There is no "magic" ending to this otherwise "epic" novel. I don't want to discourage anyone from reading it, but wouldn't recomend it either. Overall I'd give it a big GODDAMMMIT!Wife just read The Sun also Rises (I haven't) and she thinks you all are nuts for even thinking it was good.I'm worn out and don't know what to read now, i feel spent.
