Now can we get some more serious disscusion going on this? or is it donehonestly though im surprised many of you dont realize how serious of an issue this is,how big of a blackmarket demand there is for many of these "specialty items"...like i recently saw a video of guys pulling hundreds of sharks out of the water, cutting their fins off and dropping them right back in the water live....was very disgusting and looked very painfuland apparently those fins are worth more then gold in asia

what happend to the brick avatar and sig stuff....sick ass movie that NOBODY knows about
i feel that showing other men that i too like the way girls look better communicates to them that i am a part of their community. i'm very comfortable portraying women in whichever light i choose to communicate this.

if you talked with someone who was devoutly vegan they would think you are insane for not realizing the suffering that chickens and cows are put through before they are slaughtered is the same that this elephant went through. i would be inclined to believe that they are "more right" if there is such a thing. they realize that the motives behind any animal abuse is wrong where you recognize that only the motives behind certain animal abuse is wrong.we are all animals. that which is good for our survival feels good (sex, being healthy, helping others, etc.) and that which is bad for our survival feels bad (chemical dependence, unhealthiness, selfishness, etc.) there's no real animal hierarchy. no species is necessarily "better" than another species. we just all have evolved into a certain niche, and certain niches require animals to be smarter where others do not. but it does not mean that species of less intelligence don't feel the same pain that an elephant does.

That's a tough one. Does being more cognizant of why you are feeling pain make it any better or worse?

hmmmmm.i might argue that being cognizant can help to relieve pain. mother teresa wore shoes that were too small and hurt her feel because if she wore comfortable shoes then someone else got the small ones and had to go through the pain. i suggest that her pain was alleviated and welcomed because she was aware of it.

I disagree. Some animals posess self awareness (humans, orangs) and some animals can exhibit symptoms of PTSD (elephants) when they have a highly traumatic experience in infancy. Furthermore, some animals are equipped with more highly developed nervous systems, thus pain is transmitted more effectively and has not only a physiological effect but a behavioral effect as well. Meaning that pain does not only cause an immediate fight or flight response but can inexorably cause a fundamental shift in natural behaviors, even to the point of over riding basic instinct patterns. Therefore, the effects of pain stimulii on a tapeworm does not carry as significant of result as the effects of the same stimulii on an animal with a more highly developed nervous system.

Well that's just idiotic. It's just as likely (or unlikely) that someone got painful blisters because he or she was wearing shoes that were too big since mother teresa took the ones that would have been the correct size.

very very well said. i shall consider it more. i guess my first thought would be that there actually is a pain hierarchy within the animal kingdom and that i mis-spoke or was wrong (take your pick). is there any correlation between intelligence and nervous system development? i was just thinking from the point of view that all pain is an instinct that is programed within us, and every animal must feel pain when it is not procreating in a more generalized sense.

it's a parable.a better example might be a good father who would take 50 punches to his face to save his son from taking one.

This might be a stupid question, but.. why didn't they just keep giving the ****ing elephant heron? He was obviously extremely addicted to it, and going cold turkey put him in insane pain and discomfort.. why not just keep feeding him heroin and let him be docile, high and happy all the time? What would that harm? Yes, I think it's cruel to get the animal addicted to smack, but once he is, isn't it so much crueler to make him quit than it is to keep him addicted? What's the worst that could happen, he hangs out infront of my local coffee house with a "Will Work for Peanuts" sign and a crappy acoustic guitar?

Um.. that's not the issue. This story isn't about some proposal to the Indian parliament on whether or not to start shooting up their nations Elephants... Obviously you don't get him started in the first place ( though, from a drug smuggling POV, the reason you do it is to keep the elephant docile and easy to control). But, once it's started, why break the habit? Try and keep up, chrozzo.
