The more I think about it the closer I come to the conclusion that Brian Burke is not a very good GM, especially in this new cap era.If I recall correctly he ended up losing Bryzgalov for nothing. Then (despite what you think of the signing by Lowe) he got sniped by an offer sheet. He had plenty of time to get Penner under contract for a lot less than the Edmonton offer. Then there was the Bertuzzi experiment which resulted in a buyout. And now we have him trying to give Schneider away for nothing so he can sign Selanne.Granted Niedermayer didn't do him any favours by taking his sweet time and tying Anaheim's hands but Burke just seems a little overrated. I think he belongs in Toronto.

I'm so tired of Burke getting credit for that cup run, he inherited a great young team who made the cup before the lockout and was already 1 win away from a cup win. Not only was it a team full of great young players, they were stocked full with a great stable of young guys waiting to crack the lineup. Burke is the most overrated figure in recent NHL memory, I hope Toronto gets him so they can ensure another 40 years of mediocrity.

I take Burke over Bob Gainey anyday...I think Bob Gainey is overrated to be honest...All the Burke haters are jealous of his Stanley Cup...He "inherited" a team is such a cop out.

Let's have a secret prop bet where we can see how many threads we can start with various discussion topics, and see what percentage Serge decides to turn the discussion into X TOPIC vs XXXX on the Pens, Habs, or Sens, completely unprovoked.I'll set the line at 100%.

Burke should try to land Detroit's GM job before the season starts to keep his legacy alive.

YOu can say that about every team..No GM has run a team for 20 years and is responsible for every player that is on that roster. The fact is Burke held the team together by managing contracts, rosters in a tough salary cap era.

WHATTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? Burke inherited that team completely, and made virtually NO moves to build it. SINCE then, he has NOT won, and he has put his team in the worst salary cap position in the NHL..... GREAT gm....

I'm guessing this is pre Burke appointment to Leafs GM position defense by Serge? There are not many in the hockey world that are still big Burke fans. Him not signing with the leafs in the off season may have been a great move for Toronto as maybe even the Leafs will see he is not that great a GM. Not much chance of that but maybe.

I just like the guy and his personality..He is a great interview and I actually look forward to his interviews..95% of hockey people, players, coaches and GMs alike are boring to watch talk...Burke says whats on his mind and he is brutally honest.I love the guy, I think he would be perfect in Toronto, only for the fact that he takes no shit from the media and he will tell them off..I would pay to see a 30 minute interview with Howard Berger and Brian Burke..GOLD jerry GOLD

Let's not get carried away. Burke brought in Neidemeyer, Selanne and Pronger. He may have had the advantage of having young talent to offer, but he still brought in the 3 keys (other than Giguere) that won them the cup. He also managed to salvage something for Federov.

I think to suggest Burke made no moves to help win that Cup is pretty off base.He traded away dead weight like Sykora and Fedorov, and he managed to use that cap space to get players like Pronger. He was the one who got Beauchmin, who is highly underrated in my view and was a big help in winning the Cup. Marchant was also part of that package, and helped. like Munro stated, it was he who brought in some of the most important talent for that Cup run.It was also Burke who unlike many other GM's (Im looking at you Poile and Waddell) who decided he wouldnt clear the cupbaord bare for a Cup run, and it paid off huge. The old adage, sometimes its the moves you dont make.....applies here I think. Also, I remember watching an interview with him after the Cup, and someone suggested he had this great young nucleus of talent, and he was the one who pointed out that these young players were all thanks to the work done before him, especially pointing out Murray (old GM) and his scouting team. He said they had done a spectacular job, and he was reaping the benefits of their success. Thats a pretty stand up guy in my books.I think Burke is slightly overrated due to his personna, but I also dont think he is a terrible GM. Show me a GM with no blotches on his record, and I'll show you a guy who doesnt take any chances and wont win a damn thing. I would agree he fell into a good situation in Anaheim, but Im pretty sure many other GM's wouldnt have sniffed a Cup run, let alone win the title, if given the same opportunity.
