The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is starting up over in Europe. Some people say that it will create a Black Hole and destroy the Earth. They are now injecting protons both CW and CCW and slowly bringing them further along the length of the ring. September 10th is the date for full circulation. After that, they will be working up to the full energy of 14 TeV.So..... Is this the beginning of the end of the world? Should we start partying really hard now? Should I just donate all my money to FCP?If anyone is interested, here is a link to some really great pictures of the most complicated device ever built by man.http://www.boston.com/bigpicture/2008/08/t...n_collider.htmlIf you click the link, give it some time, there are some high-res pictures. In the meantime....... Stakes.....Will we or will we not be destroyed by this machine?Must be ready to play very soon.
FYI, but I think LongLiveYorke here at FCP is working at CERN.

Don't need a stake but what is the purpose of this machine? If it causes black holes then why do people want to run it?
Question #1:They want to know why everything is the way it is. Physicists are running this thing. I am a physicist. We want to explain why everything in the universe is the way it is. It might seem arrogant. It might seem blasphemous to some as well. And when you add the fact that they are looking for the Higgs Boson, which some people have unfortunately called the "God particle", it doesn't help. There are 4 known forces in the universe: Electromagnetism, Gravity, the Strong Nuclear Force and the Weak Nuclear Force. They are looking for a "Theory of Everything" which will unite all 4 forces. In short.... they want to know everything.Question #2It won't create black holes, and even if it did..... they would disappear before anything happened.Aw crap..... I gave away the End of The World stuff.

All the major countries in the world. It is a joint venture of all the players.
I did read the article and look at all the cool pictures. What are they trying to get out of this? I can only assume this is costing billions of dollars. I know there are alot of things that we don't know, but is this really worth all that time and effort? I hope this is not coming off bad. I am intrigued by this and want to know more about it but everything I am reading is about ten feet over my head.

not me_______To all the cynical Americans out their, the following illustrates the power of Science over the mindless brutality you do understand:If the U.S. had chosen to be a moral people, and leaving Iraqi oil alone, and following Al Gore, decided to develop the South Western deserts, with the technology of the times - solar/thermal-molten sodium - electricity installations, for the same amount of money as that war cost, ($650 Billion), today, we would be tapping into the largest, renewable, sustainable, energy source the world has ever known. It would have paid every energy bill in the U.S.A. for maintenance fees only - FOREVER! It would be equivalent to an oil field that can NEVER run dry! Low cost electric power, and storeable hydrogen gasoline replacement from the electricity, for all! After the millions of murders, and $650 billions of dollars, borrowed from our children’s futures and pissed away, with thousands of our own and others maimed and disfigured for life, millions of families utterly destroyed, ours and theirs, we are no closer to Iraqi oil production than the Iraqis are!The next time you hear a blithering idiot spoiled brat, drunken, drug addicted, sociopath, rich Arabic saber dancing daddie’s boy oilman, stand at a microphone and threaten YOUR safety with someone ELSE’S weapons, remember what you lost America, remember, and weep

That would be such an amazing job. If so, I hope he posts. Can you imagine playing with a toy like that?

It doesn't, or at least it doesn't pose any threat to anybody. It's nothing more than an incredibly overexagerated press story by people who don't have a clue what they're talking about.

The whole thing is just jaw dropingly amazing. I would reccomend to everyone to look further into it because it really is incredible. I actually just watched an old West Wing asking this exact same question. If it finds the upper limits of what it is possible to find doing the experiments, then we could have tangible proof of other previously theoretical dimensions, and with that knowledge comes a massive leap in the understanding and evidence behind matter and the nature of the world. For countless years theoretical physicists have been asking questions that untill now we've only been able to theorize about, and theorize they did. But now, finally, they have the chance to conduct experiments and prove/disprove the theories many have spent their lives creating. The person who discovered the electron had no idea the applications of what he discovered when he did so, and the possible results from this collider are so huge that we can't quantify the possible applications of what can be harnessed from them.

Meh... I had a Commodore 64 once. Eat that.

Anyone who has gotten this far and is an American Citizen has to ask a question:Why is this machine being built in Europe and not here? Why is the rest of the world passing us by?

I have been hearing that China has been stressing Engineering in there schools, to their students from a young age. They could be passing us by, or hating us for no reason. We have two things thay want badly: Fresh Water and The world's Entertainment.

Very good questions. And they are not easy to answer. I will try with the following example:The computer I am typing on, and the computer you are using to read my words are very simple machines. They only understand two things....... 0 and 1.Think about that for a moment. 0 and 1. So simple. Yet look what we have managed to do by manipulating 0's and 1's.YouTube...... Streaming Video...... MP3's......... The Interweb thingy........ DVD's..... hell, online poker.....when you bore down to the nitty gritty, all it is are 0's and 1's flying around.Physicists want to get down to that simple, yet elegant level of explanation for everything. Can all life be broken down to 0's and 1's?I don't know, probably not. But I'll take what mankind's smartest minds have discovered and proved over any 2,000 year old fairy tale any day. The next time you log on to your computer, or watch an NFL game in high-def on your Plasma Big Screen, don't thank God. Thank Humans. We are the ones who made it happen. We are the Gods. Each and every one of us. We all have the power to understand and control the universe.Wow....... too much booze and ganja. But I believe and stand by every word.
