Balloon guy 158
I know, I know, Get a Blog. Stop now if you can't focus for more than 2 minutes.Trip to EuropeFlew out of LAX at 11:00 pm. Bummer to have red eye because they had about 6 movies I wanted to watch, slept 4 hours, watched 2 movies.Arrived London 9:30, car took us to Hotel in middle of London just down from Trafalgar square, slept 4 hours. Shuttle to Ship, 3+ hours because some lady left her purse at a rest stop and we had to double back, on board by 2.Nice room, balcony, we go explore the ship. The casino has 4 poker tables, regular poker tables, not the electronic ones. Good news and bad, since I own PTEK stock.First port is Guernsey, nice island. Take a walk around the town, great weather. Head back to ship.Found out Michael Godard is on the ship, doing exhibitions and commission pieces. We go to first auction, buy an original in the Gold series, and plan on buying a commissioned piece. Normally for a Michael Godard original at the galleries, it’s $45,000 for an original painting that is made into a series, These are starting at $13,000. The first one will be the one he paints during the demo. He is also doing a much cheaper version of is originals. These are starting at $2480, but they are with gold pen only on a black board. So an original Goddard, but instead of a painting it’s basically a sketch with gold on black. But still, $2,480...I know JC would get one, so we plan on bidding at tonight’s auction. I of course want to have him do a poker theme with cigars and a rose for the wife, but she wants a whole family ‘portrait’ with all the kids etc represented. Makes it cool for our family, but worthless for resale. I’m sure we’ll fight..I’ll lose, and I’ll like it.Sat down at poker last night, $3/$6 limit. Only game being spread, rake is 10% max $5. So basically we will never beat rake and with tips lose about $175-$200 per hour. I held my own, up about $50 when my AQ raise pre gets 5 callers. Flop AQ4. I bet get raised, all fold, I re-raise, guy re-raises me. I put him on set of 4s since he just smooth called pre-flop. I check call down, he has aces. I remember a similar hand in the FCP tournament where I lost with AA to AQ on a flop with an A and a Q, but not my luck last night. Then I lose with QQ to 99 when he flops set, board is J high and 3 people follow me down. KK loses to A 4 with a Q 8 4 flop, turn J river A. He called me all the way down and hit on the river. Same guy two hands later I have JJ raise pre, one caller from BB, flop 10 9 2 he check calls, turn bring6, he grabs 12 chips, then checks, and since I am out of his site line because he’s in the 9 seat and I’m in the 2 seat I think it’s more likely a planned check raise than an angle shoot. I decide to check to see river, river A he bets I call his A Q. No big deal, but big mouth says: You slow played yourself into a loser there. For you guys new to live poker, when you beat a guy, just shut your mouth and rake the pot. You didn’t earn the right to be the expert, and it’s pretty rude to rub in a suck out. We play till 2 am since the ship will be too close to the shore line for most of the cruise, so the casino will be closed, so one of the guys decides to make a list, and the casino offered us to use their tables, so maybe we’ll get a $1/$2 no limit game going. All the guys decided to not cash in their chips and one guy bought an extra $500 worth of chips. So at least there will be poker, and NO RAKE. Plus all the degenerate black jack players etc will have only one game in town, and probably sit down to some super soft $1/$2 games.Only 2 players worth their chips, the rest are standard $3/$6 players. I might offer to deal, heck with tips, and maybe $2 an hour per seat I could make more than I can in no fold em hold em. Standard whines constantly about how they would have won this pot if it was no limit. They point to one guy and say he never folds if he hits anything on the flop, yet they keep trying to bluff him. Some people really don’t understand how to adjust, why you can make more with less risk and why you get more value town bets, all they see is their bluffs got called and they don’t like that. If bluffing is the best part of your game, you should play liars poker. Only not with Navybutton, he’s really good.Dublin:Went to the town of Dublin and just explored. Took a double decker hop on off bus and got the lay of the city, found 3 cigars stores, bought a couple Cubans and some Cuban coffee. Smoked one while the wife shopped and I hung out in front of store and people watched. Why are all European guys under 40 in great shape? Must be the sports. Got our Starbucks Dublin coffee mug and ate in a pub, wife had Irish stew, good stuff. Great city, lots of people, clean and good stores etc.I tell you what, if Dublin is any indication of the world’s economy than we are in great shape. Full on building boom, lots of new commerce, really an exciting time to be a Dublinder I would think.Got back to ship and went to Michael Godard demonstration. We bought a commissioned piece, and the good news is my wife went with my idea, which makes it her idea and I agreed to it. Boys learn what it takes to be in a happy relationship. Comedian tonight, then poker.Enjoyed the last half of the comedian show, we were late. Then took wife to room and headed down to poker game that everyone agreed to meet at 10. I get seat 3, and they had decided to play $3/$6 again. But without a rake there will be $150+ extra on the table each hour. I get up a little then start folding forever. I make 2 bluffs when I raise pre with pocket Js and 10s, both time there is an ace on the flop and I have position and get everyone to fold to my bet.One hand I raise AJ off pre-flop. Flop is KQ4, I continue bet, get 2 callers. Turn is 3 I bet, one caller. River 8 I bet he calls with A4. This was a pretty good player I thought, of course he was up about $200 so maybe that played into the mix. Plus I hadn’t been looked up in a while. But whatever the reason, I’m sure he will become a total calling station now, so I can get some value bets into him. There’s one older fellow, very reserved, very well kept that has been getting killed. Either kicker trouble or second best pocket pair, just killed for both nights. I have a lot of respect for his play, he made some very advanced checks on river when a scare card hit etc. And he doesn’t tilt, at all. So he’s always on my don’t mess with list. Final hand of night I have A10 UTG +2 but everyone starts saying family pot so I limp. Flop J 10 4, SB bets, 5 callers. Turn 10, sb checks around to me, I bet, 3 callers. River 2, checks around to me I say I’ll show one card and show the 10 and bet, they all fold and say they appreciate the warning, and all three show J rag. So maybe I raise pre they never see flop, maybe not, but I rake in nice pot and I am up $120 for the night. I need a rack so I get one and buy some singles from a guy so he can just take the chips into his pocket. Since we were playing ourselves, there’s no way to cash out till tonight, so I need to take these chips to the room. So I fill up a rack 95% full and head to cigar bar.Have a nice smoke and read a book then it’s 2 AM and I head to room. I have to walk through the closed casino, carrying a full rack of chips and suddenly think I am going to have trouble if anyone sees me walking out of the casino when it’s closed with a bunch of chips and no one else around. But I get to the room okay.LiverpoolSleep till 7 and we’re in Liverpool. Take the double decker hop on and off tour bus and see the city, very cool city but a lot of it’s wealth came from the slave trade so there’s a bit of sadness to the feeling I got from the city. Lots of Beatles references, the pub they played at over 270 times, their schools etc etc. Not a big Beatles fan so I’m not much excited, mainly because Elvis will always be the king. Period. And the rain waits till we are back on the ship, so that’s 3 stops with no rain…we are lucky indeed. Got a game tonight to play. We went to a Bill Mack unveiling, he’s a relief sculpture, so his paintings are 3-D and very good. He bought the entire original Hollywood sign, the one that stood for 80 years and is painting old Hollywood stars and putting a 3” metal mat around the painting that is cut from the metal that made the sign. So these will be pretty limited. His agent told me they will only do 10 of any painting in the series, so the first one, then the other 9 that he will paint. The real value is the metal from the sign, very collectable imo. Price is $38K so I don’t think I’ll be getting one, but we’ll see if the wife has too much champagne at the next auction. I’m usually the instigator to buy art, she usually ‘gives in’ but sometimes she doesn’t fight much. Don’t really have the money to get one, but I would really like one. He of course had an Elvis painting on the ship, plus James Dean and Katherine Hepburn. But the Michael Godard original painting is also up at the next auction. He started painting it during his demonstration, and got the sign for a pub, plus an olive leprechaun carrying a giant beer glass, It will be interesting to see what he does with this. $13K to start for this one, and truth is there are some heavy hitter art people on this cruise. We had no idea that there were going to be artist on board, but I guess they advertised this to their art customers and some people came just for the art. There is a 25% chance I will bid on the original Godard, but I would not be able to stand a bidding war.BelfastJust got back from touring Belfast. I had known that Belfast was the center of the ‘troubles’ but driving through the streets of Shankill and Falls really brings a sense of dread about life that I hadn’t felt since St. Petersburg. Here were people living 50 yards from bombings and shootings and abductions etc. and for them that was it, that was the way it was. The two neighborhoods were so close that they erected a 50’ tall fence to try and stop the other side from throwing things at them, they were literally next door neighbors. Schools still have bullet marks, burned out shops had painted signs asking for the arsonist to be caught, etc. Some guy standing with his mates flipped off the bus, needless to say no one wanted to get off that next stop. I know we’re spoiled in the United States, but being in the middle of an area that fought for reasons that I couldn’t really fathom made me understand how precious our civility and freedoms are. Sure we hate the other political party or the rich or the Hollywood snobs, but our hate is always expressed in words, almost never deeds. For a country our size we are pretty much easy to get along with. Sure there are examples of violence and areas that are not safe, but for the most part, we Americans don’t know living in dangerThat’s probably why we took 9-11 so hard and were so willing to invade anyone that we could pin a label on, we’re not used to living with uncertainty. So we road the double decker bus, got on a broken one, sat for a half hour, then got on the next one, and open topped one and ended up on top, and of course it rained and was windy and cold, so for the most part I don’t think I’ll be returning to Belfast. I am now looking at the two cranes that were used to build the Titanic, which was done in these ship yards, right outside our balcony. Saw a Thai food restaurant named Thai - tanic, thought that was funny.Didn’t play poker last night, the casino was open and the rake is just too high, plus we have our private game for the next 5 nights while the casino is closed because of local regulations. No rake equals more profit for me. So instead I watched my wife play $.02 machines for max bet of $1.80, she made $60 then I stupidly convinced her to try the $1 machine. Oops.Got the art auction in 3 hours, we’ll see how stupid I get. Knowing me, there’s no telling.Yep, bought the demonstration piece by Godard. He made an Irish pub named O’Martini and had an olive leprechaun running out of the pub with a giant glass of bear, with a cruise ship in the background. He left some space to personalize it, so we are meeting him tomorrow to give him some of our ideas. Then we got invited by the cruise ship art lady to dinner and ended up sitting next to Godard and his girlfriend. Totally cool guy, loves Monte Python, jokes all the time. I really had a great time cutting up with him. He really got a kick out of my being a balloon ‘artist’ and having just done a balloon drop for Rascal Flats was a big hit with his girlfriend.Went to the hypnotist show for a bit, but it got kind of boring, had a bunch of people under and was telling them things like they were on a roller coaster etc. When he told them that when the opened their eyes the whole room would be naked, I lost interest. Of course 2 of the ladies laughing and pointing at me didn’t help.Poker game was going on, sat down for 2 hours, lost $40. Had QQ in sb, 6 limpers, I raise, ace on flop I check fold to bet raise, later find out seat 3 was slow playing kings, so I really lost the minimum because he slow played with 3 limpers, letting in 3 others. Next orbit, I’m in sb, get QQ again, just call 5 players, K on flop I check fold. 3 players are in every flop, their stacks fluctuate a lot. The old cranky guy next to me is always whining about them playing no-limit hands as he calls them. Of course every time he whines and calls him down, one of them shows down a real hand. Glad he left early. Final hand I limp with weak ace after 4 limpers, next guy in cut off raises, everyone calls. Flop A J 4 all hearts I have none. I check call turn is a 9 I check call, along with 6 others, river is another jack, guy to my left open bets, I have original raiser and to my left and 4 others, so I fold, he calls, everyone else folds, bettor shows 98 for nines and jacks, original raiser instamucks. Wow, I love this game.Had a cigar and watched some fights, then to the room at 3:30. Still can’t sleep, it’s 5:00 and I got to get up at 7 to go on a tour. Yuk.GlasgowGot to sleep in till 9:00 so felt pretty good, we decided to catch a train on our own to Glasgow and wander around ourselves. Glasgow is a beautiful city, with great people. Had a nice lunch, a curry chicken thing called Tiki or something, Got my wife a Celtic cross she wanted and a pair of Tartan shoes. The prices in Scotland are the best of our trip. It’s funny but there was a noticeable difference between Ireland , which is on the Euro, and Northern Ireland, which is on the pound, and Scotland, which is also on the pound. I guess having yet another layer of government over you results in higher taxes that translates into more expensive everything. It is odd that we all know this, and ignore it as we vote in more government everyday. The logical conclusion is that eventually we all work for the government 24/7.Back to the ship and we have an appointment to meet Michael Godard for our commissioned gold pen drawing. They have us get to the artist wine and cheese party 30 minutes early to meet them privately, and up walks Michael in a full Scottish dress kilt. Complete with bagpipe. He starts drawing our piece and I get to film the whole thing. It’s a busy picture with ‘me’ as an olive floating away holding a cluster of balloons with a lit cigar in the other hand, my wife is a strawberry, holding some flowers and chasing after me, with a cup of coffee on a table and casino in the background. The balloons have the 4 suits of cards and a sign says “We olive floral design” for my florist wife. There’s a lot more but that’s the gist of it.Then the art director invited us to dinner again and we ended up at the table with the artist Sharie Bohlman, also known as Roxie. She and her husband live about 15 minutes away from us and we ended up getting along great, we know many of the same people and talk about Palm Springs for an hour. Funny end to the night after about the 30th bottle of wine for our group of 20 people, Michael Godard is leaving, and comes over to say goodnight, still wearing his kilt. He grabs my shoulders and my wife grabs the camera, so I stand, and suddenly everyone wants to start taking pictures, and it gets crazy with grabbing and pushing and I am quickly ushered out since I am nobody and stand to the side. After about 5 minutes of yelling and madness Godard says he has to leave, and I’m standing off to the side since this all happened next to my table and he looks at me and I shake my head and say: “Sorry man“, and he laughs: “What happened there?” Then he asks me to get my wife and we take a real picture outside the restaurant. We are meeting them tomorrow to finish the demonstration piece, and add some extra touches to the large gold series we got. I can’t say enough how nice a guy he is, very real about being cool, not a front at all. His girlfriend has a tough job being his ‘heavy’ as she gets things rolling keeps him on track and helps control the situations, he gets to be a big goof and she has to be the adult, but she does it well and he is too nice to not be himself. Plus I was able to catch the world premier of his new song on the bagpipe: When the cows come home. Early bedtime for me, 12:00 and no poker since the wife is a little tipsy from the 2 lemon cellos and flowing champagne. I had water. Sea DayWe had a champagne breakfast this morning brought to the room because she likes the whole idea, for me it’s a waste of money, but whatever she wants. I’m on the balcony, smoking a cigar watching the Scottish coast roll by with a light rain. We are within a mile of shore so we can see it pretty well and just passed a castle sitting in the mist on the shore. Surreal. Small sail boats appear out of the mist and float past this behemoth of ship on this calm as glass sea. It’s a wee bit cold, but that’s how a Scottish morning should be. Sea day today and I need the rest. Found out later the castle was the one they used to film Entrapment with Sean Connery and Catherine Beta JonesWent to the art auction, didn’t buy anything. whew. Godard did some touch ups on the paintings we did, added a rose in the hands of an olive for Susan, added a sign to the painting showing the way to St. Andrews. Got a game tonight.Well poker was crazy. Started off great, getting good cards, getting action and making hands. AK K on flop, pair of kings called down with a Q high board, then I got my comeuppance. Started with AK, flop AQ4, bet calls, turn 9, bet 1 caller, river 3 bet got check raised by 2 5 off. Wow. Two hand later, I raise UTG with Kings, get rivered by another gutshot from the same guy. 3 hands later I get flushed on the river by the same guy with the nut low flush. I had 2 pair or better 4 times beat by baby straight gut shots or at best double gutters. Now I normally make a point of reminding myself why I want these guys chasing and calling, esp when it’s the same guy. But when someone made a comment that he’d never seen anyone as lucky as that guy with his baby straights, he starts the excuses about how he counts his outs etc. Sure on the hand he just sucked out on me he had a flush draw with his gutshot, but it was a 6 high flush draw. And with 4 callers can you really count on the flush to hold up? And to top it off, he had no qualms check raising me every time when he hit his gutshot. It’s a $3/$6 game with a bunch of friendly guys playing every night, then maybe the check raises can be used for the flopped sets etc, and not for the 4 out suck outs. When he left I held my tongue, but soon everyone was ragging on his play and they all started saying “they call because they had 24 outs” the rest of the nights. I even called down and made a suck out and felt so bad I gave the guy his last 2 big bets back. I just can’t play that kind of poker. Unless Checky is in the game I mean. But the cards came back and I was able to win back my losses plus. Last hand I had Kings and raised pre, flop A K A, so I knew this was going to be good. Got 3 callers, then 9 on turn, all three stayed, and a big beautiful K on the river. I bet and turned over my pocket kings to let everyone know they should fold and ended the night up $50.Had dinner with the art crowd again, ate with Bill Mack and his wife and a couple from Australia, real crack ups. He’s a contractor, a bit rough around the edges, bought a Bill Mack Hollywood sign painting or James Dean for $49.5K. Met other couples who also love buying art and have had cocktails and dinner with them the last 6 nights. Had a cigar with Michael Godard ( he smokes cigarettes) out on the deck, he’s a real genuine cool dude. He bought 3 kilts and has been wearing them each night while he paints for the crowds.Intergordon:Played golf at the Royal Dornoch golf course in Dornoch Scotland. Played with Bill Mack’s manager, shot a 42 front, he shot 41, then back I fell apart on the back, shot 50, he shot 42. Then went to town and had lunch, ended up in a hotel built in the 14th century and had a cappuccino. All together with cab rentals balls glove round the day cost me $240ish US.Dinner with art crowd. Found out that all the art connoisseurs were invited and their cruise was paid for. So you figure the cruise line paid for a $5,000+ cruise just to get these people to come to their auctions. That’s some serious players. I keep waiting for someone to ask us to leave these dinners, but so far they have welcomed us in and treated us great. There are some funny stories that really don’t work out on paper, but most nights my mouths hurts from smiling and laughing so much.EdinburgWhat a beautiful town. Great old castle sitting high on the hill. There was a parade the day we were there so we got to see some bagpipe marching bands, etc. Plus a theatre weekend so there were tons of street performers and dance troupes etc. Really had a nice time in the town, could spend a few days there for sure. But after not getting to sleep till 3:30 again and an early wake up by the wife, I was falling asleep while I stood watching the parade, so I figured we better get back to the ship. Dinner with the art people, skipped poker and went to bed.Sea DayTook wife to casino in early afternoon, first time it’s been open in 5 days, and it’s only open till 2:30 then closed till midnight. Goofy deal but they have to be closed when they are within 12 miles of shore I guess. Sailing through the north sea oil fields, watching Des Brophy paint a couple paintings. Commissioned him to paint me a bar scene with two old RAF veterans talking about their “Glory Days” I really like the feelings in his paintings. Plus a couple of the real art collectors told me that Des Brophy isn’t known by Americans, so the prices were extremely low, half in fact of what he normally gets. So for under $2,000 I got an original Brophy.Had a cigar with Bill Mack and Des Brophy the last couple nights, fun guys with a lot of stories of the art world. A big Australian by the name of Charlie and Des spent the better part of an hour explaining the offsides rule in football and the intricacies of Cricket. They also argued about which form of Rugby was best, bunch of name calling you don’t hear in the states, “Lot of Nancies they are” Clods couldn’t think enough to play proper football” etc. I feel I could probably watch a match now, but not sure which side I would favour. Then off to the casino to play black jack with Bill Mack and his manager. Bill and I bet too high for our bankroll, and head on back to the cigar store, his manager bets minimum and ends up plus $300 for night.I lost about $350 total playing black jack. While at the cigar store Bill and I are talking about the Republican convention and since I am almost surely going to be working the balloon drop and his home and studio is in the same town I will be looking him up. His manager promised to take me golfing, and I am really looking forward to seeing how the sculptures are reproduced at his gallery / foundry.La HavreNorthern France is our last stop. But we are tired, many many late nights ending around 3 AM with 7 AM wake ups. Naps only get you so far, I need a right proper rest. Walked around the town of La Havre and watched my wife spend the remainder of our money on French fashion. Truth is the prices were very good, even with the 30% reduction of our money transferring it into Euros. I think the truth is she wanted to punish me for losing $300 at blackjack with Bill Mack last night. Poor Michael Godard was doing his drawings for people who purchased them as late as 1:00AM last night and went to Paris today with his Mother and girlfriend. 3 hours on a bus, 5 hours in town and 3 hours back, I bet he’ll miss dinner tonight.Had a great cigar while sitting in the sun on our balcony reading and old James Herriot book I found in a ‘antique’ store in South Queensferry. Got a bit of sun in the face and now we’re packing, all the while pretending it will all fit. We have 4 bottle of champagne from all our art purchases, plus all the star bucks cups my wife loves to collect. Little note for you future travelers to Europe, purchase a Starbucks gift card and use them for your purchases in Europe, saved a ton of cash and the conversion is correct.London:In London now, leaving tomorrow. Tired, but trying to make the most of our day here.

That trip will be much slower paced, running through a city does miss out on the flavours, but it's also cool to get to see a lot in a short time.Dude, Prague is THE most beautifull city I have ever been to. Reading your post you like art and old architecture... Maybe 5 days won't be enough for you then You have had to walk there to know the sheer beauty of the city.Jan
Poker Addict 0
Nice trip! But nowhere in the poker content do you discuss the hot cards of the day. It could have been more profitable for you if you only took your own advice.
