My Card Collection

Not my picture, but I have one of these (which I have probably posted about in here years ago). I have been saying for 20 years that I need to get it rated. Should I if I don't plans to sell it anytime soon...or ever?

People have them listed for over $1k on ebay, but what do they really go for? The rating matters big time, right?

We have day 1 complete at the Expo.   It was a very uneventful day since the turnout was low. I believe that the fight between 2 guys in the industry is going to get nasty and another show is going

Otto and I enjoy it. We spend the whole weekend together and have a blast. We don't make a lot of money from it. We only do it for the love of the hobby   Because of doing this we have met a lot

The show I think was a success. We had a regular win the signed derozan jersey. Thank god he won since 3 guys I have never seen came in at the last second. When the draw was over they left. Peopl

Grading matters big time. Is it OPC or Topps? How is the condition? Corners sharp?

I have a Gretzky that is a bgs 4. Had it since I was a kid. I got it graded so that it is incased and I plan on keeping it forever

Here is a story on a Gretzky. Another dealer made a trade for a Gretzky. I look at it and it was beautiful. He got it graded by Beckett and it came back a 9. Offer it to me for $4k (it was selling for around $4.5k). I decline and he sold it for $4.5k. Today you can sell it for around $15k

Wayne, did you get the Gretzky you got off me graded? Do I even want to know? :/

Yes the guy who brought it got it graded by Beckett. Came back 1.5. So worth around $200-$250

I found a Gretzky in my office a couple of years ago. Forgot I had it and it was in rough shape. Big crease in the middle. Still came back 2.5 which really surprises me.

My personal one is a 4

1.5? Seemed significantly better than that.

Remember the pencil mark on the back and the dent on the front of the card.

We thought it was a low grade too but it is what it is.

The Gretzky was absolutely mint. Most Gretzkys are rough cuts and not center. This one was really good. So not too many out there.

That pencil mark was art by me when I was 11... should've charged at least $500.

We kept looking at the pencil mark. Some think they can take it off but I i would never do it since I might damage it further. So we decided to leave it on and get it graded

It's OPC. I got it in a pack I bought for $1 in the summer of 1985. I put it right into a case and it hasn't been out since. I also haven't looked at it in probably 15 years, but I know exactly where it is at my parent's house.

If you can give me a scan I will give you my best opinion on it if you like.

I would think the card is in pretty good condition.

An ungraded one would go for around $150.

Now if it was graded (PSA or BGS) approximately of course:

PSA 9 is $1,000

BGS 9.5 is $2,500

BGS 9 is $500

So yes getting it graded does increase the value of the card if it is mint. At the Sportscard Expo, someone had a McDavid that was a BGS 9. He got it regraded and it came back BGS 10 (gem mint). Sold it for $4k, as a BGS 9 it was $350. I know of some dealers who buy up high end cards to get them graded. You hit one, you are gold.

Crazy.

I will try to remember next time I am at my parent's.

Or if I am ever in Pittsburgh I will drop by

I think the last time we talked about you in town, I was living by the Airport Marriott (where I believe you stayed a few times). I am now right along Interstate 79 toward the Tanger outlets (right between the Bridgeville and Southpointe exits).

Any chance you can get Mario to sign it?

Then send it to PSA.

I haven't seen him around in a while, but check him out this week in the classic Cooper bucket at this fantasy camp: https://www.facebook...&type=3

Yes correct. I have stayed at the Marriott a few times.

We always hit the Tanger outlets in Washington PA

I remember you saying you hit up the outlets so I knew that would be a good reference point for you. I'm about 10 miles north of the outlets.

The 1-2 times a year I play poker, I head to the Meadows casino right by the outlets.

  • 3 weeks later...

Some crazy stuff going on in the basketball market. I stopped collecting during this time (97-98).

Here is one

Now if this is the emerald one (out of 100) it goes for $20k. I can't find an emerald one so I posted the metal one (not sure what it is out of)
