Craziness Outside My Door

Recommended Posts

OK. This is all going on right now.I live in some apartments in a medium size town. It's a college town. I've got some partying college kids that live below/across from me. They're nice enough, but of course they like to raise some hell every once in a while. For example, last week, they were setting off fireworks at 3 in the morning. It really doesn't bother me, as I sleep during the days, and basically, shit like that doesn't bother me anyway.Tonight, I've got my daughter with me. I went to sleep when I put her to bed. I woke up a little over an hour ago, and surfed the forum a little while. I noticed I could hear the partyers downstairs.About 40 minutes ago, I was just about to fall back asleep, when I heard the partyers outside. Basically right down a flight of stairs from my door. All of a sudden I hear 8 loud shots, and a "WTF". I think it's probably just firecrackers left over from last week. Just to be on the safe side, I grab my .357 and my "home defender shotgun", and place them next to me. AS I'm drifting off to sleep, I can hear the sounds of police radios down there.I look out one of my windows to see a police officer standing down there. As I'm looking, my upstairs neighbor looks out her door, and the police tell her to stay inside. I go look out another window, and I see crime scene tape and flashing lights all over the place.Since I'm currently a prisoner in my home, the first thing I thought of was to tell my FCP family about it.Actually, the first thought was to protect my daughter. She slept through it all.I'll update later as to what happened.Oh, and sorry about not putting this in OT, but since it's breaking news, I thought I'd put it here gfor now.

Oh. As my daughter and I came back from the pool today, they were all standing around smoking cigarrettes. I heard one of them talking about casinos. I have a short conversation with him about gambling. I remind him that I'm a poker dealer, and would be happy to help him learn the game if he wants. He thanks me, and I go inside. There's some poker content.Still not sure what's going on out there. My window locations suck.

Maybe in a couple hours check your local online newspaper and it may appear as 'breaking news' of some sort.

I'm trying to eavesdrop on the police conversation outside my window. I just heard one of them say, "He got one here, here, and here. The paramedic said he got one in the back also."I may have heard "Dead on the scene" too, but I'm not sure.edit: later on, I find out there's no "dead on the scene".

Time to move maybe????? Glad to hear you didn't get caught in the crossfire. Me thinks the babymama is not going to be happy.
Funny, I'm looking to move. I haven't yet, since I haven't found any place in my price range where I would feel safe. I have actually felt really safe here, and to be honest, will still feel safe here tomorrow.

It will actually be safer now. One is dead, the other on the run. Now your block is, how do the kids say it, "hot"? I still think purely random violence is rare, and that's why it's so sensational. For the majority it's just the criminal element consuming itself. You do hear about stray gunfire, but it can't be that common. If it was it wouldn't be so newsworthy. Glad you're ok. I guess I would move if you can, but I think your daughter will be safer throughout the course of her life if she gets to spend a lot of time with her dad, and do some extracurriculars, and get cool presents. This opposed to living in a starchy burb away from any kind of danger and reality while dad has to pull 2 jobs just to make ends meet w/little disposable income. You don't seem scared. She won't be either.

Thanks for all the kind words everyone. All is quiet out there now. They've finished doing their police work, and the crime scene tape is down. I guess it'll be morning before I can find out exactly what went down.As I said, I do feel safe here. It's not a resort or anything, but definitely not "the hood". The group that had the problems tonight aren't thugs by any stretch of the imagination. My impression of them is more of a group of partying college guys.Although I don't know the whole story, I'm still saddened by what I think is an event that has changed some lives tonight. I picture a mom and dad getting a phone call in the middle of the night with some really bad news. The reason I'm wanting to move is because the distance I drive to work each day. The problem is, the town where I work is definitely "the hood", so my options there (and anywhere close by) are limited.Gonna try to get some sleep now.Peace.

Who would have thought driving to a casino in Mississippi would be a jump up in security?Take them all to Cracker Barrell, you know they'll watch your back if you take them to Cracker Barrell

Talked to one of the guys this morning. Here's what happened:Roommates A, B, and C."Bad Guy" J, who lives in another apartment.Roommates A and B do not like J. He apparently has done/said some bad things to B's girlfriend. In the near past, J has been told not to go near their apartment.Roommate C is friends with J.Roommate C gets drunk, causes some problems, gets into an altercation with B. Roommate C then leaves to go to J's apartment.J shows up. Roommate B meets J out front (around a corner) and tells him to go no further. J ignores him and continues toward the apartment, rounding the corner.Roommate A is waiting right outside the door and tells him to stop. J continues coming forward, so A unloads a .22 clip into him.J falls, gets up, leaves, and falls again out in front of the building. He is in the hospital. I have no idea how bad it is.Roommate A calls the police, tells them what has happened. They show up and take him into custody. All in all, it's basically a typical college-age dispute, with a handgun thrown in. In my opinion, it's more sad than anything. Now, before this turns into a gun ownership debate, I just want to say that I was happy to know that I was legally waiting behind my door with much more firepower, and felt much more safe as a result.

People probably know by now that I am pretty "pro-gun" - but stories like this just sadden me. I am certain people will speculate regarding the circumstances of this story. Anti-Gunners will say that if no guns were involved the outcome would have been different. Pro-Gunners will say that the gun may have saved A's life or other speculative assumptions. All I know for sure is at least two young lives have been changed forever in one instant.

Can A claim self defense since the guy was trying to intrude in his home?
