defy 0
With all this buzz surrounding the new idea regarding the WSOP main event final table being televised in November, it got me thinking about the first couple of times that i watched poker on TV. Moreover, I'm not so sure if this has been done before but I thought it would be cool idea to see what the first televised event that everyone watched was, what your initial opinion was, and how that changed your outlook on poker. There are three occasions that come to mind when i think about the first time i watched poker on TV. Granted that I'm only just about to turn 19, the first time i watched poker was fairly recent..maybe about 3-5 years ago. The first occasion would be probably the most common one, Moneymaker winning the ME in 2003. I just remember seeing brief scenes of HU play between sammy and chris and thinking how ridiculous it was that there was so much money at stake. I also thought it was incredibly boring. That is however, until i watched a WPT event that Carlos Mortenson won, and it almost feels like from that point on i was hooked on watching poker on TV, and everything relating to poker. Watching David Pham hit running Q's to win a big hand in a WPT event is also something which I vaguely remember and can't gather enough memory to remember exactly which event it was (might've been the same one that Carlos won?). Soo..my question is..what was your first televised poker experience? (in more than one word..don't gimme answers like.."WSOP 2003" )
bull62 0
IIRC it was Scotty Nguyen's (you call it gonna be all ova baby) ME win.
PhilBluff 0
One of my favorite memories is when Aaron Kanter snap called an all in with just a flush draw against Raymer. Of course hit and proceeded to donk his way to 5th place.

PhilBluff 0
4th, 5th close enough, he ended up busting soon after
psujohn 0
I don't remember exactly which episode but I'm pretty sure that the first poker I ever watched on TV was Celebrity Poker Showdown. Keep in mind I didn't even know if three of a kind beat two pair at this point - well without the little cheat card that used to come with some decks of cards. I actually learned quite a bit from that show.
pepper50000 0
I remember coming home from work on night and channel 10 (australian tv) showing some WPT.Id never even heard of texas holdem, i couldnt understand why they had cards on the table, lol, id only played 5 card draw with my mates in school.I couldnt believe how much money these tournaments had has prize money, favourite memory of poker on tv has to be HSP though, tournaments get old after a while so seeing some good cash games is definetly excellentim also hoping that they show a omaha cash game soon, that would be sick
OVERKILL 0
I actually remeber the year that Stu Unger won his second I believe. The one that was televised from outside. And Gabe Kaplan was the commentator. I was like why the hell is Mr. kotter talkin about poker? I also remember thinking, how is poker a sport?I believe it aired on ESPN when espn first came out, or I first knew about it at least.
James D 0
Late Night Poker here in the UK, way back... prob around 2000/01 time. I remember seeing Devilfish play, he used to wear these square little glasses, and basically looked like an undertaker.. he's changed his image since then a little.I had no clue what was going on at all, mainly because it aired at around 2.00 am and only caught it a few times after coming back from a night out with friends (University days), so it was pretty funny after having a cheeky smoke, laughing at all the weirdos around the table... and I remember that they all did seem a bit weird, but it was hilarious. NickZepp 0
Stu's 3rd in 1997 was on ESPN. That's the first one I remember. Gabe Kaplan and Phil Hellmuth did the commentary. Phil was usually right on his reads looking back at those shows. Gotta give it up to him for that.
IBFT 0
The first televised poker event I remember watching was an ESPN WSOP telecast where I thought Sam Grizzle and Phil Hellmuth were going to kill each other. I think it was probably 02 or 03. Was funny shit.

Bad Muscle 0
Moneymakers bluff on Sammy Farha was the first episode of poker I watched on TV. Needless to say the game interested me a great deal after that.
Pokerkid555 0
I'm part of the "poker boom" I guess because I got into it with Chris Moneymaker winning. I remember being a HUGE Chris Moneymaker fan after because I loved the way he played and whatnot...Of course this was before I knew all the professionals and realized Moneymaker was kind of a shit player, but hey. savagerebel 0
I think I started watching when Mortenson won the ME. I always watched my dad play with his buddies at deer camp. Like everyone else, I was amazed at the amount of money in play.On another note, why can't more new people make threads like this?
FourFlusher 0
One of the first shows I saw had a young kid with eyes that kept darting around the table. I remember thinking "that kid needs to wear some sun glasses to hide those eyes or he'll never amount to anything".Kid's name was Phil Ivey.Pretty good read, eh?
Cappy37 0
First real poker memory was watching the original Poker Superstars Invitational along with the 2003 and 2004 ME's.. Nothing sticks out really..Worst poker moment: JC Trans pain when Goerhing hit the case f'n 5 on the river... That made my skin crawl I felt so bad for the poor guy.Best poker moment: Gus Hansen absolutely crushing PSI's final match, going all in 16 straight times when he needed the *first* place finish or he was going home. Simply amazing.. I kept it on Tivo's "do not delete" for over a year.

pckt10s 0
I think the first time I saw poker on tv was a replay of the 2000 ME with Chris Ferguson... I believe it was on Discovery Channel that year
