One of the greatest franchises in sports is named after the geography of their previous city before they moved. The Los Angeles Lakers started in Minnesota....Home of the 10000 lakes. With my team hitting a rough patch, unable to gain any ground on a playoff spot, I decided to try to move some pending FAs. I went in with around $25, but needing to save some for call ups later on this off-season. I needed one set of goalies, and I was planning on getting 2 forwards. I managed to get one of my targets, Zach Parise, for $8, a bit less than I was expecting to spend on my first forward, so I decided to change my plan a little. My next target would also be a forward, but should the opportunity present itself, I would try to get two good forwards instead, or perhaps one forward and one defenseman. However, I needed to get the 2nd forward out of the way first. I was able to get Patrick Marleau for $6.75, again, a good price in my opinion. I then figured I had about $5.75 to spend on another player. I got into a bit of a bidding war over Marian Gaborik and decided to go another dollar over my internal cap, and did manage to get him at $6.75. I don't think I'd have gone a penny more, so this worked out well for me. I'm left with $3.00 and 3 roster spots for my call ups. I had originally planned on calling up 4 guys for $5, so I may need to leave Bjugstad ($2) on the farm to start the season. I have a month left to make those decisions, though. None of my potential call ups are as good as Gaborik, so it was an easy decision to switch my plan mid-auction. That said, here's how the roster is shaping up as we approach the season: I've included 2013-14 pool points per game, for reference. I'm missing that breakout star like a Crosby, Ovechkin, Stamkos, Malkin, etc, but I decided to go for depth in the auction, rather than spending my entire bankroll on either Malkin or Ovechkin. It falls off a bit after Marchand, but I think Hemsky is due for a bounce back on what appears to be a stacked Stars team. Boyes is a dirt cheap filler, as is McGinn. Johansson and Silfverberg are entering their second years in the FCHL and I'm hoping for them to break out a little bit and start trending towards their eventual peak. I'll likely also add a player or two from the farm, but nobody particularly exciting. Parise's frequent linemate Charlie Coyle has the best chance of seeing the FCHL this season. Other possibilities include Jeremy Morin (CHI), Nick Bjugstad (FLA), Riley Sheahan (DET), Ryan Strome (NYI). Defense: Kris Letang (PIT) 0.446 PK Subban (MTL) 0.384 Ryan Suter (MIN) 0.311 Eric Gelinas (NJD) 0.300 Tyler Myers (BUF) 0.250 Jared Spurgeon (MIN) 0.231 Tom Gilbert (MTL) 0.212 Johnny Boychuk (BOS) 0.187 Sergei Gonchar (DAL) 0.158 I stood pat on my defense, though I wouldn't have minded adding one player, as I'm slightly out of balance towards forwards after adding three in the auction. There will likely be one call up from the farm, however. Simon Despres may see some time in what will likely be his last bid to break into the NHL full time. He's currently penciled into Pittsburgh's top 6. Meanwhile, some higher profile players like Dougie Hamilty and Ryan Murray may get the nod. Goaltending: Montreal Canadiens (-1.244) New York Islanders (-1.628) The goaltending options at auction were pretty limited. The higher end teams left me with a large number of holes throughout the season and playoffs, so I ended up having to look elsewhere, and decided that coverage was a lot more important. MTL/NYI combination land me with the lowest possible number of no-goalie nights in the regular season, with 7. However, they present a problem with 3 potential playoff conflicts. The best option Carolina (7 reg season/1 playoff) seemed to be everyone's best option, as they went for a whopping $3.25. I had no plans of going over $1 for my goaltending. That held when I tried to get Ottawa (10/0), which would have been lovely for the playoffs, but again, was outbid. I got the Islanders for 75 cents later, and I'm happy with that. They should be much improved with their young D one year older, and they finally brought in a real goalie in Jaro Halak. Link to post Share on other sites

Islanders should be improved an may even swing to the top 10-15. I don't know what happened to the day of very mediocre forward going for $17 at auction, but getting 3 tier-likely guys with real tier 2 potential for $25 seems downright special. I picked up Marty St. Louis and Anton Stralman in exchange for my 2015 1st round pick (late round), Brad Boyes, and Jamie McGinn. The players I received are rentals, while Boyes/McGinn are salary dumps and they open up $1 next year, and $0.50 for a few years beyond that. Zach6668 513 Posted February 1, 2015 Author Share Posted February 1, 2015 The Rockets made another trade the other day: Rockets receive: Mathieu Perreault - F - WPG - 0.50 RFA Crop Dusters receive: Ales Hemsky - F - DAL - 2.00/2.00/2.00 Tyler Myers - D - BUF - 0.50/0.50/0.50/0.50 The deal cleared up enough cap space to call up Nick Bjugstad from the farm. It also got rid of the terrible Hemsky contract that I signed in the summer. Trading Myers wasn't idea, he's still got 3 years to turn it around at a bargain price. Also, he was an original member of the Limidonk/Rocket franchise, a 4th round pick (46th) in the 2008 FCHL entry draft, immediately prior to our inaugural season. Perreault is having a decent season, even if it's buoyed by that recent 4 goal game, and he technically becomes my #6 forward, but he's probably actually a bit further down the depth chart. Nonetheless, he offers an upgrade over Hemsky. Adding he and Bjugstad help provide a ton of depth up front. There isn't much of a hole losing Myers on D, as he was about 10th or 11th on my depth chart. As mentioned in the FCHL thread, this now gives us 12 forwards over 0.400 (including 6 over 0.500, 4 over 0.600), and 8 defensemen over 0.200 (including 4 over 0.350, and 1 over 0.500).
