greenstein talks about winners in the big game.

Recommended Posts

The Wynn just opens up and the face of their poker room starts  picking fights and making challenges.
Technically, Barry Greenstein is the one who started the fight. First with his constant backhanded references to DN as a second rate (tier) player. But the biggest insult was when he accused DN of cheating. Calling a poker player a cheat is about the biggest insult you can dish out to them, probably as bad or worse than insulting their mother. DN quickly proved that it wasn't true and made BG look like a fool. If I were DN and Greenstein accused me of cheating when I obviously hadn't, I'd hate the guy for life. I just hope DN is able to let go of all the silly insults and animosity when he plays BG heads up and destroy the guy. It wouldn't surprise me if everything BG has said and done has been an elaborate way to mess with DN's head, for the next time they play together. As far as BG's article goes, I agree with what he says about the players of the big game being the true great players. But this includes DN, JH, and Todd Brunson.btw I predict if BG comes out ahead in this 10 game heads up match he will claim from then on he is the better player as he proved in the heads up matches. But if Daniel wins more of the matches he will claim the results were meaningless with such a small sample size

They are meaningless, but there is going to be a crap load of money on the line, I think Barry truly believes he's the better player and he is trying to dent DN's bankroll hugeeeee

DN, TB, JN - big game players, yes....big game contender, unlikely. popping in to play once a month doesn't make you a threat to anyone. my assumption is TB and JN playing in the big game when it was 2k-4k. i haven't heard anything about JN playing $4k-8k.

Don't forget. BG has said that he thinks that Jen Harman isn't even the best female player---he thinks it's Mimi Tran, who he happens to coach. How freaking big is this guy's ego????

According to the Stacked VG website Jennifer Harman set the all time record at the 4000/8000 game with a $1.7 million dollar single session win.http://www.stackedpro.com/the_pros.php
you have the source right in front of you, yet you still post a false statement. she won a $1.7 million pot playing andy beal in a 10k-20k heads-up game. get your facts straight.

I like it much better when the two big dogs take each other on. I think it is silly when others do it, especially when they are wrong. He said Mimi is possibly the biggest money-winning female player (from side games).Barry's words:"Jennifer is the best all-around woman player in the world. She is the only woman to regularly play $1000-$2000 limit and higher. She is the only woman who has won two WSOP bracelets in open events.""Jennifer Harman-Traniello - Maneater by Hall & OatesSince Jennifer is the premier female player in the predominantly men’s world of poker, this song seemed appropriate."

Tell you the truth i don't really think i've ever heard BG talk about his donations, it always seems to be the comentators on tv, but i guess i could be wrong, and yes I'm sure a lot of players donate, but i doubt that a lot of them donate 100% of their tournament winnings most wouldn't be able to afford to do so.

So, you're implying Barry isn't a winner in that game? I know this is a pro-DN forum, so I wouldn't expect many on here to be too happy with Barry at the moment, but doubting the man's success without any proof is just ignorant. If the rest of the poker world will tell you Barry has been a consistent winner in that game for years, why would you doubt it?
The rest of the poker world hasn't been saying that- Barry has. It would be equally foolish to assume that Barry is a winner in the big game just because "he says so."
Just by Howard admiting he is not on their level currently should tell you a lot.
All Howard said was that he's too busy right now to be focusing on the big game. I don't know if he could win in that game right now, but that's irrelevant. Barry is GREEN with envy that Howard gets so much media attention. Jealous is not the word.
TIER him a new one....GREEN with envy....the pun-o-meter is going to explode! Are you hoping to BARRY him in the HU duel?

"There are five top players: There's Doyle Brunson, there's Chip Reese, there's Chau Giang, there's Phil Ivey, there's myself," Greenstein says. "Those are the five people who beat the biggest game."It is my understanding that there are several more pros who regularly play "the biggest game". If that is true then can someone explain to me why, and more importantly how, these pros would regualrly play in a game they are losers at? To put it another way, where do they get the money to keep losing at this game. I can see a Texas billionaire coming in and regularly playing and losing, but a poker pro? Give me a break. That top 5 list seems too short."You could make millions of dollars if you could beat our game. Do you really think these people would worry about making a few hundred-thousand (dollars) selling DVDs and videos if you could make millions playing poker? It's pretty obvious, isn't it?"Well if you say it is obvious then maybe I am missing something. Howard Lederer, a former winner in "the biggest game", basically gave up those winnings to play tournament poker and to cash in on the *other market* of merchanding, endorsements etc. Howard seems like a bright guy, perhaps Barry is missing the point that there may be a lot of easy money out there that does not require you to eke out 0.3 or so bets per hour but just gives you cash for pretty much free. Another point, touching on something else. I don't like to be critical of anyone giving money to charity but he opened up this can of worms himself. If he chooses to give all his tournament winnings to charity, and if he can make more in "the biggest game" than in tournaments, then isn't he shortchanging his favorite charities by playing in tournaments? It would make more sense to play the cash games and give a certain percentage of that to charity instead. I will let others draw their own conclusions why someone who presumably cares about these charities missions' would do that.Quick, who is the better athlete of all time, Wayne Gretzky or Michael Jordan? Dumb question eh? They are different sports that require different sets of skills. Why then do so many people (ahem BG) feel the need to belittle one set of skills that are not needed in one's own chosen field? I am pretty sure Jordan would never do that to Gretzky and vice versa. Finally, I am glad someone else pointed out something I could not help but notice. this smells an awful lot like the hype thatoccurs just before a boxing match, with both sides spouting so much bovine scatology (b. s.). It is quite funny from where I sit.

How much time do you spend at Bellagio? Most of the time I've been there Jennifer and Todd have both been in the game. This is where they make their living. Out of the multiple times I've seen this game...I've never seen Barry playing in it.Jennifer only recently started playing a full tournament schedule, before then she spent all of her time playing the big game (and winning). I'd be interested for Barry to explain how Jen got her beautiful house and her Hummer (see cardplayer spotlight on JH) if she's a loser in the game.

Barry isn't playing because he is finishing up on his poker book. He plays the side games at the big tournaments (which is one of the reason why cash game specialists hang around big tournaments).

Barry did not say JH or TB are losers in the game (he has nice things to say about their games on his website). They just don't beat the game like he (or doyle, reese, ivey, giang) does.

Assuming what DN and BG is true, who are the actual "donators" in the big game?Barry said the following were big winners: himself, Doyle, Chau, Chip,IveyDN said these players were also winners: Jen H., Todd B.So that would leave the following players who are losers in the big game : Johnny ChanEli ElezraGus HansenRandom WhalesOccasionally bobby baldwin or lyle bermanThere are more people who play in the game, just can't remember who else has been mentioned.I was suprised to see that noone mentioned Johnny's name when talking about winning at that game.

Assuming what DN and BG is true, who are the actual "donators" in the big game? I play higher stakes at the Taj and other places, and there are people who sit at those games and lose on a consistent basis (I use to be a major loser), so I assume there are the same players at the Bellagio, we just dont know who???

For those "in the know" Barry never took any [ego] crown away, he always had it. Barry on the other hand looks to belittle others in order to feel better about himself. All the while disguising his nasty comments as fact.To blast Stu Ungar's game, knowing that the man isn't here to defend himself was a little much even for me to fathon.Barry is full of it, LOL.Barry on the other hand looks to belittle others in order to feel better about himself. All the while disguising his nasty comments as fact. The rest of the poker world hasn't been saying that- Barry has. It would be equally foolish to assume that Barry is a winner in the big game just because "he says so." Barry is GREEN with envy that Howard gets so much media attention. Jealous is not the word. Well my plan is to "tier" him a new.... never mind. This guy has totally lost his mind, seriously.
Daniel, I respect your play, generosity, and contributions to poker in general but.. Do yourself a favor and take the high road here by zipping your mouth for a little bit.I lose a little more respect with each childish post you make regarding this matter. Barry, meanwhile, picks his spots and thinks before he states his well-worded opinions. Ignoring who I feel is correct in the matter (I don't really KNOW who is correct) this has gone beyond the bounds of gamesmanship and is entirely, in my opinion, in bad taste-- bordering on character assassination. Barry comments about poker players abilities and does so respectfully, offering his opinions. Most of his responses on public forums to Daniel, especially the more recent ones, have at least explained why he views DN personally in a certain light.. When he does make jabs, he explains them and doesn't reduce himself to saying that his opponents have lost their mind, are full of it, etc (case in point the first part of the BG quote below.
1. Doyle Brunson and Chip Reese are the only two icons of poker. Anyone who tries to include himself with them and what they have done the last thirty years deserves to be mocked.2. I play in the “first tier” game and Daniel has in the last couple of years moved up to the second tier. There is some disdain that players in my game share about players who haven’t proven themselves at the highest level.4. Daniel is a potential opponent and I don’t mind throwing subtle jabs his way out of gamesmanship.5. I made the mistake of getting involved in a thread regarding Daniel’s integrity. I think Daniel is an honest person. The case can be made that Daniel is too honest with his frank opinions about other players and telling insights regarding his own psychological issues.
To some of the other posters, you're forgetting that first tier doesn't refer to the quality of players, only the limits played. Additionally, how can you assume that there aren't higher limit games, especially when some of these games have already been played (beal)? To assume that some rich fools in Cali have never thrown this amount of money around in private is stretching the boundaries of possibility. My essential point is that this whole debate is pointless and just makes DN and BG look like two kids insulting eachother on a playground without anything being accomplished... aside from others losing their respect for the parties involved. If you're trying to improve poker's image, I recommend you (and barry) simply shut your mouths and play the damn game.-adam

Please do yourselves a favor and read this entire thread.1. Someone insinuates conflicts of interest based on DN/BG's side bet.2. BG replies stating that he can understand why someone might think it, but doesn't state that he believes it's true or even a credible argument: "In this last tournament, though, with seven players remaining, twice he raised in for a good portion of her chips and she reraised all-in and he folded. The players at the table didn't like it, but I am not protesting."3. Jen replies and quotes daniel. She eloquently states her view, although she really didn't need to fan the flames by insinuating his intent: "If you don't think he was dumping why are you even mentioning the hand. Then you mention how ethical you are with Mimi. By making that statement are you implying that me and Daniel are not."Dan, on the other hand, vilifies BG to a certain extent and demands and apology:"Barry I think this whole post was way out of line and I'm truly surprised that the idea even crossed your mind. I consider you a friend but genuinely feel as though you owe me an apology (end Daniel's quote)." I don't really see anything that merited an apology other than BG not clarifying that he didn't believe that any of these incidents merited suspicion of collusion, but BG apologized anyways.4. BG replies "I mentioned the full house hand in defense of Daniel. I'm surprised you interpreted it another way.""I don't at all think either of you are unethical players, but I am certain that Daniel was rooting for you and would have felt very bad if he was the one to take you out. I think the side bet had no effect on his plays.Other players at the table did complain about his folding against you and the chip amounts apparently were misstated by the time it got to me.If you accuse me of disparaging you, then accuse me of disparaging myself."5. BG: "That's exactly what happened. I apologized to both of them for contributing to a thread with such negative implications, especially since I consider them both friends and ethical players. I was mainly thinking of what happens when two very close friends are at a table together. They have convinced me that they are no when near as close to each other as Mimi and I are."-adam

Really how can you put Greenstein in the same league as any of the ones he listed himself with. And i'm farely certain that doyle said that he lost money playing poker last year.
Doyle stated that he was going to be broke had he not won the WPT event towards the end of the year.-adam

In reference to my past few posts, keep in mind that this and another recent incident (paul phillips) have started up some of the dumbest, flame-filled threads I've ever read about poker. Why?We're not talking about poker. We're talking about personalities and arguing using half-truths, misquotes, statements out of context, and childish name-calling. People are claiming statments to be fact that aren't even close to true, and assuming that what someone says about another person is true. I don't care whether or not Barry is a conniving, envious, self-serving prick or a generous, intelligent, mild-mannered man. The only things I've learned thus far in these two threads:1. Barry has a huge ego.2. Paul has a huge ego.3. Daniel has a huge ego.4. All three should learn to keep their mouths shut. Look what it's done to the average fan's opinion of these players.-adam
