Sitting At The Table -

Recommended Posts

Without talking about position in the technical sense of the word, I think that where people are at a live game has a large impact on how certain hands play out.Basically what i mean is that if you engage in conversation with players by virtue of them sitting closer to you (rather than across the table, ie. further away and less conducive to chitchat) it ultimately could impact the way you bet against that player should the situation arise. If you are having friendly convo with someone at a live game or tourny you may not be as aggressive against them later because of the intangible "friendly atmosphere" that has been created.i think this is part of why i prefer to listen to music when i play at live games. I dont mean to be rude but this way i have no remorse about check raising someone or slow playing when i have the nuts. Maybe im too empathetic to begin with but i generally would feel worse busting up someone who was earlier being extra nice to me. If they are Dbags on the other hand, .....whole nuther story.cliffnotes - i think i should be meaner

It works two ways: you're also going to get bet at lighter and check-raises against you hold more weight. I know a certain tomato who gets a level of respect and leeway on micro turbo tables, where people aren't even supposed to be paying attention in the first place.

I recently went to a new doctor and noticed he was located in something called the Professional Building. I felt better right away.
I ****ING LOVE COLOURING!!!!!!!!!!Also, I'm too lazy to reply, but I think the topic is actually good and should be discussed, not just flames to the OP. Basically, I support the OP and encourage others not to flame him.Now I'm tired, so good night.

couldnt disagree more with the OP. If you sit down and engage in those conversations with a "predatory attitude" (internally) , ie focusing on establishing a baseline of behavior to compare to and take advantage of later on, then you will not subconciously soft play later, you will persist in seeing him as your victim. Listening to music and not talking doesnt allow you to pick up on verbal cues if villain is willing to talk during a hand, and also creates an isolation that I dont think is conducive to focusing on everything going on.

I've noticed that people who are talking a lot more and joking around with the table can get a lot more action than someone who sits silently. I'm usually pretty quiet too, but I've been trying to work on that lately. Even if you're playing pretty tight they don't seem to notice as much because you don't have the image of being a serious player. Also, what you said about playing soft against people that have been nice can sort of work another way too. You can take those people off the best hand a lot more. They don't seem to expect the guy that was being so friendly towards them earlier would be trying to bluff them now. Then just tell them you had a set or something and they'll still like you so it can work again later, LOL.

hmm...OP, I think you could make a generalization about nicer people being treated nicer.Myself...I'm pretty much always a nice guy at the table. There are some benefits but I think there are benefits to being a prick too. I see my poker game and coffee housing as mutually exclusive. It's a game and I'm still going to play it right.Hell, I'll check-raise my own grandma!

at our casino, headphones are not allowed at the table, so i guess that rules that out of the question. I am typically the nice person at the table and i'm always very talkative. I've tried to learn to stay in the conversation even during a hand, i hope the consistency of this doesn't give off anything. I also NEVER soft play anyone at the table, i have on occasion bought a beer for the guy i felted, but i've never felt bad doing it, i'm there to make money.

When you're at the table you should be as friendly and as talkative as you can. If people are having a good time they wont feel as bad about losing money. They'll stay longer. They might rebuy one extra time. They might come back again. Being good at table conversation is just another aspect of the game that one needs to learn how to do well in order to maximize profit.

I'm with copernicus that keeping a killer mindset internally is key. But if you can put on a jovial external face while you're doing that, to me that's the key. I prefer live play because coffeehousing is fun, but coffeehousing while fleecing opponents is the nuts. And I've found that it helps me conceal tells. Basically, if I'm having a good time (bullsh*tting, telling jokes, talking sports, etc), it's easy to keep a genuine smile on my face even as I'm sh*tting bricks about my hand.I also agree with flushgarden. Make it a good time, and they'll always come back.
