Popped My Live Cherry

Recommended Posts

A Friend at work kept bugging me to come play live with him, but I don’t think of myself as a cash player. Online I play mainly S”n”G’s and MTT’s. My few journeys into the cash ring haven’t been that great. Finally I gave in and said I’d go and give it a try. Seeing that I only live 3 mins from Casino Niagara it’s surprising I haven’t gone before. So I head down planning on trying to get the feel for the live game. I’m planning a Vegas trip in the fall so I figure this will be good practise. So I headed down last week. Got there and a seat opened quickly at 1-2nl and bought in for $100. The day was fairly uneventful till near the end. The first few decent hands I lead out on everyone folded and I scooped up small pots. My Buddy at the table says something about getting table respect. I joked with the table not to respect my moves and start calling me. The next hour was uneventfull. Won a few small pots and lost a few. Finally got into a bit of a bigger pot, where I had second pair and put him on a draw. Bad read and he took down a nice pot with bottom 2 pair. I was down to $30 so I bought an extra $60. I slowly worked that down to around $50 when in the BB with A4. A few limpers in and I check to see the flop. Flop comes 646. I lead out for $10 and get one caller. Turn is an 8 and I push in my last $45 and get called. River is a 10 and I show my lowly 4 and he mucks. I’m back over a hundred again. Then the big one happened. late position I get Qd Kc with a few limpers ahead of me. I call and 6 limpers to the flop. Flop comes J96d, giving me straight and flush draws. First guy opens for $15 and one caller before me. I call and one more caller after me. The turn is 10s giving me the nut straight. First guy leads out $25 and next guy calls and I flat call still worried about the flush. Last to act pops it up to $100. Now I’m pretty sure I’m beat by the flush but the 2 other players call the raise giving me great odds to call. After a long tank I say “why did you guys have to price me in like this” and I put my last $72 in. The river is an 8c. Then the miracle happens, 2 straights to the J and the other guy has Ad and was chasing the flush. I scoop up a $500+ pot. I stayed for a few more rotations with nothing much happening and left cashing out $470 This week I went back to give it another try. Bought in for $100 at 1-2nl again. This time I was getting better cards then before. I quickly took down several decent pots and quickly built my stack to almost $300. Then I get KK and I raise it up to $7 and get a couple callers then the last to act pushes in her last $24. I call and a fairly lose Asian guy on my left also calls. Flop comes K104 w/2 diamonds and I lead out for $20 and he pops it to $40. I call and the turn is an 8c. I lead out for $40 and he calls. River is 8d and I’m hoping he rivered a flush. I think for a bit and go all in for $182. He goes in the tank for a long time till the dealer put him on the clock. Finally he calls and I show the Kings and he mucks. I scoop in a $700 pot. The rest of the day was fairly uneventful. I won and lost a few smaller pots and worked my stack down to under $600. Then I had QQ and raised it to $12 and had one caller. Flop came J84 rainbow and I lead out for $15 and he popped it to $30 and I called. Turn was a blank and I lead out $30 and got called again. Now this guy had been playing pretty lose but I’m figuring I’m beat not he could have AJ but I’m figuring he has trips. The river comes Q giving me trips. He has around $50 left so I put him allin and he quickly calls. Before he shows I say “you have trip 8’s or 4’s cuz I just sucked out on you” and showed the Queens. He flipped over his 88 and I took it down. Played a bit longer and finally cashed out $732. I’m thinking I could start to like this live cash thing now. So now I’m sitting on 10 buy ins worth of chips for my starting roll for live play. I’m ready for the variance to hit. Not sure why I waited so long to go try live.

Just curious, why the raise to 7 with KK and 12 with QQ?Also, why the lead, call-a-raise, donkbet turn play? I'm not criticizing, just wondering why you used it twice. Why buy in short?Oh, and your logic in that KQ is pretty bad. If you think you're behind on the turn with your nut straight, you're most likely drawing completely dead 4-handed.Sorry if this seems negative. Congrats on your win. Nothing beats live poker, in my opinion. :club:

Congrats on your wins! Glad you're enjoying the live play. It's so much more fun and the players are so much worse. Did the dealer really call the clock on that guy without any players asking for it? I've never seen that happen. I'd be pissed.

Not taken negitive. I'm fairly new to cash play and it's a good bit different then MTT play. I'll take all the advise i can get.Why 7 on KK and 12 on QQ... I opened the betting with the 7 while with the QQ there was a few limpers already in and wanted to isolate it down.Buy in short? $100 is the max buy inand the KQ logic was based purely on pot odds and the hands i had seen these people make plays with already 6:1 on my money sounded good at the time

Nice job. I haven't been on a sick run like that in awhile. Between October and January I pulled in $2,200 from playing a weekly $25 tourney and $1/2 NLHE. Felt good, haven't ran that good in awhile though.

1/2 live is an absolute joke. I'm in the process of adjusting to .10/.25 online, and am a decent winner there, but live 1/2 usually plays about twice as bad. I can usually make about 1/2 a buy-in in 2hrs or less of live play, which makes for a killer hourly rate, and I rarely get put in akward spots like I do at 25nl. My advice is to dabble in online cash, 10NL, then 25NL, and by the time you're beating that you won't have any problems at all w/ 90% of 1/2 games. BUT, if you do happen to be at the tough 10% of tables, request a table change IMMEDIATLY. It's just not worth trying to outplay other regs.

The thing about the KQ hand is that if you're behind, you're almost certainly not getting the odds to call because you're drawing dead.

Cheers on the scores man. That's an almost ideal way to get hooked on B&M poker. These were your first dabbles in live poker and you live 3 minutes away from the casino!? Damn I'd be a degenerate before I'd left the cradle if I lived that close.Jan
