pick one: $10,000 cash or wsop seat

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone-I was in a tournament today at a local casino that's a WSOP satellite, and the first prize is either $10,000 cash (which could really, really help me out) or a seat at this year's Main Event in Vegas plus hotel and airfare. If you choose for the cash, then the hotel and airfare money is split between 2 and 10. The way the tournament is structured is there are two day 1's (Saturday and Sunday), each with 55 people. The top 10 from each day move on to the finals this Tuesday. Well, I made it. I hope that I win, but I'm having a really tough time deciding if I want the cash or the trip. They are running a couple other of these tourneys in June also, so I could take the cash now and buy-in for the next one, or try to qualify online (though I suck at online poker). So, if you were to win this tournamen, which would you choose? Cash or WSOP seat? Please help me decide. Thanks a lot!jared

if you could use the money take it. most likely all you're going to have after the wsop would be a story to tell. if you really wanted to play in the wsop, take the money, go to vegas and try one of the smaller events. kill two birds with one stone, and still have at least half the cash left.

I had this debate last year. It was down to 3 players on the pacific poker uk open satellite tournament. 1st and 2nd got a seat to the tournament and third got about 9 some thousand. Unfortunately (kinda I guess) I had 2 to 1 over one player and 3-4 to 1 over another player and I just made the decision that a seat is a once and a lifetime opportunity and I figured I would have wasted the 10k on beer and women anyways so why not go for it all. So I just let the bottom two players have an all in fest for about 4 hands where one guy finally busted out. Looking back I wouldn't have traded the seat for anything, and I bet that one guy SuitedUp probably wouldnt trade the experience either even though it was a 25k seat. I really didn't need the money so it was a no brainer to take a week off from the school year, go to london and be on tv playing poker there. Good luck on the decision, but I still think you can't put a price on an experience and one that could be an extremely profitable one!!!

You could take the money, buy yourself in to a smaller WSOP event for the experience and pay your own airfare and hotel. You'd still be up about 7 grand, probably enough to pay off some bills (if you have them) and have a little cushion. And you have a smaller field to try and beat out to end up in the money, which would be cool.I think I'd do it that way. There are plenty of tournaments for 2 grand or less, and you still get a bracelet if you win.

If you ask the question, you probably NEED the money. This is not a criticism at all. But, it's very difficult to do your best in a tournament when you are playing with money that you could see yourself spending elsewhere. People usually have already made up their mind about something like this. They ask for advice for validation, not to seek the truth. Regardless, good luck.

Had I won the WSOP qualifier that I choked away yesterday, I would've taken the money, gone to Vegas and played in a 1500 tourney or two.I don't have many bills, but having an extra 5000-7000 in my bank wouldn't hurt either. :)With them paying the expenses, I definitely would go and play in a cheap one...maybe even a 1000 SnG qualifier.Peace,Jay

voted for the money. i can double that up and/or win a satellite and get to the WSOP. the 10k means a nice boost for the bankroll and should also mean larger profits. the wsop is a lottery ticket imo (a lottery ticket that i'm going to get anyways lol)

No one has any sense of adventure anymore... Just a bunch of Johnny Penny Pinchers. The game of poker has the least amount of pure luck out almost any game and it has obviously attracted people that are willing to gamble a little but not too much. Whats the fun in that. He turned a small amount into a possible WSOP seat or mixture of bill payments. A MAIN EVENT SEAT or a car payment/money sunk on your kids or something. For once in your life say **** responsibility and go for it. Remember your generation was weened on Press Your Luck where the big winners gambled to avoid a wammy not these losers on who wants to be a millionaire who can walk away anytime they want and have guarentees each step of the way. Gamble a little bit!

Why would you make this argument. It is obvious that taking the 10 grand is the smart choice here. There is going to be the largest turnout ever to the big dance this year. Why would you risk 10 grand on something that even the bets pros don't anticipate winning. Basically you made an ignorant statement.

Are you kidding me? All I am saying is that these experiences are few and far between. No matter how rediculous the odds are it would be a blast. I'm saying its a hell of a way to spend 10k. Besides have you been in this position? Ask that one guy SuitedUp, I know its a different situation, but I still think he'd say he had an unreal experience worth the price of admission.

money hands down.if you're good enuf to have an expected return greater than 10K in the WSOP then you're probly good enuf to win a seat elsewhere online
Exactly what I was thinking, you would have to best 85-90% of a 6000 person field just to get any return on your money. Bank 8000 of it and use the other 2000 to try and win an online qualifier.

I'd take the money.I'd first fly me and a friend to a warm place such as the dominican, and then I'd use the rest as my BR.

I voted for the $10K, because this is a quick easy poll. But, seriously if I had the time I would take the package and take the risk of re-selling it. I figure I can get someone to pay about $9K for the seat (worse case $8K).
