how much was your bankroll to start?

Recommended Posts

What did you originally start with? I'm trying to decide how much to invest into playing online poker when I'm 18 in June. Right now I have a job, and I figure I'll take a little from each check and put it to poker and put the rest to savings or paying assorted bills. Does this sound about right? Anyone have any tidbits about how much to start with? Also, did you put money into different sites or all of it into one site?

I started with 50 dollars on Pokerstars.I lost that because I had no idea of bankroll managementI then put 45 dollars on Jetset (because I had no idea of how awesome Neteller was-and they took 5 dollars for E-Passporte)If I were to start over again, and I started a 2nd roll on Gamesgrid, I'd go with 150 dollars.

it depends on what type of poker you want to play...and whether you want to play cash games or tourneys...but MY recomendation would be to read up on on everything you can about small stakes and to invest $250 into a site...play $1/$2 LIMIT hold 'em...check out SSHE by sklanksy to read, this is the most Financially stabel I believe..... NL is too hard for your bankroll to handle... that or 10-handed sit and goes can be very profitable/stable.

I had a starting bankroll budget of $2000. I put $500 at Pacific and $500 at Party. After I had played a few months I cashed out of Party, only up the $200 bonus I had earned, because I got sick of the bad beats. So many bad players there will call to the river with bottom pair and hit something to beat your top pair, I just couldn't take it anymore. I then put $500 at UB and $500 at FullTilt and quickly learned there were a lot of tough players at both of those sites and I was never going to make a lot of money. At this point, Party was looking pretty good. Then I put $200 at Paradise which a promty lost playing 2/4 and I've never been back since.I finally settled back at Pacific which has been like an ATM machine for a whole year. I'd recommend starting at Party or Pacific because there are a lot of bad players on those sites.

I started with $11 about 4 weeks ago on pokerroom just to pass some time while I was bored. At the moment I am at $1150 and playing 1/2 limit holdem until I reach 1500, when I will start playing 2/4. I didn't follow the bankroll management rules in the beginning because I was just looking to pass time. I played some NL and got my BR up to $20. I took $5.5o and won a mtt with 13o entrants, that put me up to $200. I cashed out 200 and put it into Pacific poker, collecting the bonus there and then cashed back out to neteller. I made about 100 profit with it, cashed out, and then lost what was left. Made another 100 at pokerroom playing NL and cashed out there completely.I heard about the bonus that 888.com was doing for their casino, 100% up to 200, so I cashed in and out for $200 and had 3 good hands of blackjack, cashing out 350 profit.I made $100 when I referred my friend at pacific, made about 200 profit at the NL tables, cashed out, then lost all of what was left. That put me somewhere around $1000. At that point I realized that I actually had a nice bit of money and should take it more seriously. Since then I read SSHE and started to 4 table 1/2 limit holdem, putting me where I am now.If I were you I would get ahold of $50 to start with and get reffered by someone at pacific poker. They will give you $62.5o for this deposit. Cash out the $50 that you put in and save it in your neteller account. Spend about a week playing the $10 NL tables at pacifc, which are EXTREMELY soft. You should be able to turn that $62.50 into $100 or so. Move up to the $20NL tables until you hit $212.50, at which time you should cash out 150. This $150 combined with your originol $50 from your neteller account should be put into the casino at 888.com. Cash out your $200 right away and then see how many lucky $200 black jack hands you can hit in a row, cashing out $200 each time. When you go bust, who cares, its not your money. At point you will have ATLEAST $200 in your neteller account and $62.50 in your pacific account.Good luck!

Whatever amount you start with, make sure it's an amount that you can afford to lose. There's an old adage in the gambling world but it happens to be true - "scared money never wins." You need to be able to play your game without worrying about the consequences of losing.

I had a previous bankroll, which I now term as 'buried', though I didn't exactly go broke. I played off that for a year and a half, and then decided I needed to make some changes with my poker game. I took some time off online poker, and decided to come back into the game in November of 04'. My primary concern this time was proper bankroll management. A friend and I challenged each other to see who could turn nothing into the largest bankroll. I took the challenge seriously, so I started playing freeroll tourneys at Absolute in November. I shortly won $17, and have strictly followed bankroll guidelines since. I don't move up in limits until I'm at 400BB. That might be slightly extreme, but I play shorthanded a lot, so it is a comfortable number for me. I'm at the point now that I can play 2/4 limit, though I'm still refining some things at the 1/2 level. I'd recommend going through such a process to anyone. You learn an incredible amount of discipline and not to mention, your skills improve. I learned more struggling at the 50c/$1 tables than I ever learned playing at much higher limits. With some incredible patience and solid play, you can literally start with nothing. However, I think it would be wise to start with $100-$150, as you can actually feel some progress.

i love how everyone is up thousands of dollars and no one is losing. all this just money comes out of thin air
You obviously haven't purchased the Pattern Mapper :club: I said I started with 20... I can't beat the rake... currently after roughly 4 years of play my Account is $20.04, 4 cents is interest... UB felt bad for me.

I think it's important to start at the very lowest limits to learn bankroll management discipline... it's arguably the most important skill a poker player can have to ensure long-term success...Personally, I started with $20 on Pacific (I'm not sure you can deposit that little anymore) ...Here's a short story:After two days I wasnt very good, was probably never going to play again (I'd only seen it on EPSN), I'd never played a live game in my life, and had lost most of the $20... (i didnt so much like poker at the moment)... was playing .05/.10 and I was down to .73 cents to start the hand ... hit the Nut Flush on the turn and it got capped 4 way (I ended up all-in on the river) ... I like triple or quadruppled up that hand and never looked back ...... I've always wondered what would have happened if the board had of paired on the river (and I lost the hand) ... It's scarry how luck at a crucial juncture can make all the difference...

As far as starting bankroll....i've started myself out with 5 grand so that i could play 10/20 comfortably and have been doing well there. Basically its all up to you and how comfortable you feel about playing cards online. personally at your age i wouldn't risk much money but nobody ever listens lol.

I started with $300 plus a 20% deposit bonus on Empire on August 3, 2004. I started at the .5/1 limit tables and strictly adhered to the "300 BB" rule as I moved up in limts. I've cashed out between $500 and $1000 per month since October, 2004. My BR could be bigger if I didn't do this, but I like to eat on a regular basis.I've been playing 3/6 since January, 2005...I've taken several shots at 5/10 and have had my ass handed to me each time, so I made the decision to wait until I had at least a 4K roll to try again. I made that attempt last night, and now I'll be playing a combination of 3/6 and 5/10 until I'm completely comfortable playing 4 tables of 5/10.

Mine was a hundred at pacific poker... After a bunch of luck and thousands of sit and gos ive done all right. It's crazy how different I play now compared to how i played when I started. Playing all those sit and gos and overextending my limits, losing 1k in 2 hours, winning 5k in 4 hours, all those things teach you invaluable lessons that a book can't teach you and its something someone can't tell you. For all of you philosphy buffs one of my favorite quotes is something I abide by....Freedom, like a recipe for game pie, is not a bright idea; it is not a 'human right' to be deduced from some speculative concept of human nature. The freedom which we enjoy is nothing more than arrangements, procedures of a certain kind: the freedom of an Englishman is not something exemplified in the procedure of habeas corpus, it is, at that point, the availability of that procedure. And the freedom which we wish to enjoy is not an 'ideal' which we premeditate independently of our political experience; it is what is already intimated in that experience.2Michael Oakeshott

I was thinking the same thing.I have been playing for about a year now. I twice deposited $50 when I started and lost that with a35% bonus on the first one and a 20% reload on the second which I cleared both before going broke. The third time I put in $50 with a 50% reload bonus and cleared it. By this time I had read a few books, so I broke even for a few weeks, then placed 3rd in a big tourney and won about $800. For a few months after this I played mostly 5+1 and 10+1 tourneys or sngs, with my bankroll going up and down between about $300 and $1200. Then read Harringtons book on NL tourneys and some good strategy articles about sngs. Now I play $20-$50 sngs and $10-$50 dollars tourneys making about $300 a week average, cashing half out to my pocket and putting the other half in my neteller account or poker bank account trying to build that up so I can move up in levels.I think about the best week I have had was about $1200 winnings and worst week I have had since was losing $500. The sngs are what really make me money right now. Tourneys although I am doing better, I still have a lot to learn in them with patience and the right time to make certain moves.Play at the levels your bankroll allows if you don't have a lot to invest and only move up when you have enough to do so. Because no matter how good you are or how good your cards are, if you play at a higher limit or amount than your bankroll can afford, you will get a run of cards where everybody draws out on you and lose it all.If you improve your play, stay at the right limits until you are ready to move up, you should be able to make the bankroll last and build on it.

I just put together a 3k roll. I live near AC so I only play B&M. going to play 1-2 NL and see how it goes.
So what do the pots average at that level of blinds in NL? When I play live I have only tried 3/6 or 5/10 limit. But I have really want to try NL cash games live, just not sure how much I need to play at that type of game.

I would go with no less than 25 buy ins of whatever NL action you are seaking...Most casinos that run 1/2 NL allow a max initial buy in of $100 so i would recommend atleast 2.5K if your gonna go that route.
